I'm not sure one idea is better than another. If I were writing it I'd try to make it as real and honest as possible, without any contrivances. Also, in my scenario, the feelings the boy has for her are hidden. They only become revealed when she discovers feelings of her own for him. He is trapped, stuck inside his own insecurity and desire. She frees him of those constraints when she gives him an entre into talking about, and acting on, their sexual feelings.
