what everyone already knew, it shot down the Ukrainian airliner. Further it was the "Aerospace Division" of the IRGC, no surprise there either. The grand Poobah says that those responsible will be prosecuted, then blamed it all on Trump. Just what Trump needed, another trial, what?

The IRGC is the source of virtually all of Iran's economic and geopolitical image problems. They truly are a barely in control terrorist group. But the Grand Poobah's need them to stay in power. They're almost as effective at killing their own citizens as they are killing others in their activities.

Just goes to show that no matter how bad things may seem there's some asshole, or group, that can figure out a way to make things worse.

The number of people participating in the mourning and burial of the dead general does not indicate "barely in control" but rather the opposite.

The "number of people" were virtually all IRGC cadre. The general population knew exactly what that "general" represented. As far as they're concerned good bye and good riddance.

Will the commander of the missile battery be awarded the Legion of Merit? Apparently that's what the US does when you massacre a plane load of civilians.

My OP did NOT suggest the guard is clinging to life. It's alive and well and has the full support of the Poobah's. My OP DID state that the IRGC is the primary reason for Iran's problems and that if the Poobah's were to disband them that they wouldn't be in power much longer. If the IRGC didn't off the Poobah's the population would and would probably have the support of the military. Not all the military but enough to get the job done.

Estimate the number of people in the photo below. The guard is not loved. The guard is feared. Your OP suggested the guard is clinging on for dear life.

You are mistaken.

Any minute now Ishtard will be claiming that a US invasion force will be "welcomed with open arms". I've seen this movie before.

Soleimani had a 73% approval rating in Iran. Higher elsewhere. But you just keep pumping out the Boltonesque talking points bullshit.

Still filled with stupid utterances, huh Sean?

The Iranian military still has some professional leaders and the would have the support of the population in the event of a foreign invasion.

Still pontificating about shit you know nothing about, Ishtard? The Americans haven't had a presence in Iran since 1979. Other countries have. I'll trust the sources actually on the ground rather than an internet blowhard who's always happy to cheer for more dead brown people.

Drunk already?

My understanding is that IRGC are generally hated by the population, especially since they violently repressed both the 2017-2018 and 2019-2020 uprisings.

But what distinguished Soleimani from the rest of IRGC, was that he wasn't allocated to internal matters. He was mainly involved in protecting the borders and fighting Iraq, the US and ISIS, successes for which he was widely loved .

But he was still a part of the apparatus.
According to Reuters' sources, he'd been part of the plan to subvert the 2019-2020 massive popullar uprisings, by engineering a conflict with the US.

There's a problem with that narrative. He WAS the commander of the IRGC and a commander is responsible for the actions of those under their command. There were no reports of any of the IRGC paramilitary involved with those internal incidents being arrested let alone tried. To my mind that indicates that he approved of those actions, as did the Poobah's above him. He was certainly in a position to punish those who participated in those murders if he had chosen to do so.

Lotta anti-American sentiment.

I would imagine that his approval rating here is about equal to DNC registrations for living citizens and resident legal and illegal aliens.

I would imagine his approval rating in America prior to getting killed was a resounding "Who?"

With help from the Democrats and the anti-Trump press they came up with the following:

"A fuller statement published by the BBC shows Rouhani also said said “an atmosphere of threats and intimidation by the aggressive American regime” had Iran’s Armed Forces on alert when a “miscalculated shooting caused a major catastrophe.”

A sad day. Preliminary conclusions of internal investigation by Armed Forces:

Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster

Our profound regrets, apologies and condolences to our people, to the families of all victims, and to other affected nations.

They offered free lunches to the attendees and threatened anyone who didn't appear to be mourning. Threats were taken seriously as the regime had already killed 1500 anti-government protesters, but like our own Democrat Party, Iran does have multitudes of people in support of terrorism against the United States.
