Ooo, don't talk about Planet of the Apes! That is the question, right there. Does the meme make the person seem ridiculous, or does the meme grant widespread recognition and an aura of lighthearted badassery to the persona of the actual guy?

Depends whom you ask, obviously.

I do consider homophobia to be "serious business," yes. This type of thing isn't funny.

And while I understand that some people giggling at the meme don't endorse the actual guy's views, I personally find it difficult to separate the two - particularly when I suspect that the meme enhances the person's audience, many of whom give credence to what the guy actually says.
