Is Homophobia a form of Homosexuality?

But the relegious aren't homophibic in the sence that they are 'afraid' of homos... They just oppose it.

I just said that, only with all the words spelled correctly.

I have heard that 75% of homophobes are gay

Or perhaps they are afraid that they are gay. And they can't reconcile their negative view of homosexuals with their possible homosexual attraction so they react with fear, anger and disgust - at themselves as well as at their victims.

you are a woman and a child and perhaps you will never understand never living it.. hope that helps
So the thousands upon thousands of lesbian youth in the United States can't understand it? I can understand saying "you can't understand because you're straight" or "you can't understand because you're a gorilla" but "you can't understand because you're a young female" is just preposterous. I experienced homophobia myself as an out lesbian while still in my teens. I have friends who have experienced it. Believe me, I know it's no picnic, and I still am a woman and a child.

I have a brother who has admitted to me that he is a cd! However, he is a homophobe of note!! I have always been of the opinion that homophobes are latent homosexuals and they fight their true feelings because they have been taught that being gay "is not right"!!
To me that is a load of crap!! If you want to be gay, then by all means be gay. Who the hell am I to judge you for what you are?
while some homophobes may be gay.
not all are
people need to keep that in mind. and keep an open mind

some say that more than "homophobia" it must talk about phemiphobia",the fear of turning into a female................identifiyng as female all the traits real men should despise.........weakness,tenderness and all things that can turn a MAN into aweaker being   ..........

in many cases, shrinks talk about "fear of the fear itself".........when the fear of fearing homosexuality is so strong that the patient is afraid of even thinking about it...........

many homophobic people fall into that category.............others just can't accept to have mixed feelings about it.............

it should be noted that many homphobics are closet gays, for sure.........as wel as many so caled macho institutions have an high ratio of homosexuals(lie the army, and,in middle age,the samurai caste).

Threre's also a confusion at the base.

you ARE.

What you DO,your tastes, even sexwise, are just a part of the whole......so many forget about that.

Real Men-Joe jackson

"Take your mind back - I don't know when
Sometime when it always seemed
To be just us and them
Girls that wore pink
And boys that wore blue
Boys that always grew up better men
Than me and you

What's a man now - what's a man mean
Is he rough or is he rugged
Is he cultural and clean
Now it's all change - it's got to change more
'Cause we think it's getting better
But nobody's really sure

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

See the nice boys - dancing in pairs
Golden earring golden tan
Blow-wave in the hair
Sure they're all straight - straight as a line
All the gays are macho
Can't you see their leather shine

You don't want to sound dumb - don't want to offend
So don't call me a faggot
Not unless you are a friend
Then if you're tall and handsome and strong
You can wear the uniform and I could play along

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

Time to get scared - time to change plan
Don't know how to treat a lady
Don't know how to be a man
Time to admit - what you call defeat
'Cause there's women running past you now
And you just drag your feet

Man makes a gun - man goes to war
Man can kill and man can drink
And man can take a whore
Kill all the blacks - kill all the reds
And if there's war between the sexes
Then there'll be no people left

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are"

the Bi chick has a thought....

What if some people just don't like gay people? No latent homosexuality, just like how some people don't like people who have tattoo's or anything stupid like that. . .what if some people just don't like gay people.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying...as Freud said...

"Sometimes a Cigar is just a Cigar."

you're right,but i think they're referring to homophobic.............

also, stupidity and ugly personality are traits found in every kind of people, regardless of sexual preferences.............being bi,gay, straight makes no difference............a jerk is still a jerk............who tries to tell you otherwise is just spilling nonsense............

I personally think that one is a direct product of the other.

If you dont understand homosexuality then you tend to be scared of it. Likewise it applies to just about everything in life. People that are afraid to fly in a plane fear that it is an unsafe act because they can not see what is holding up the plane. I belive that the principal is almost the same.

Well, some people who simply don't like gay people are sometimes categorized as homophobic...hence my point.

i completely agree......that's why i've said that a jerk is a jerk..........it applies to both hetero,str8,bi or whatever...............and the gay who label as homophobic someone on the fact that he/she doesn't like gay people is a jerk............at least for me.

Thanks for your contribution :rose:

Thanks for posting this topic Brinnie.
I've always held the belief that homophobic people are just expressing their own self-hatred.
Whatever their reasons for feeling bad about themselves; religious beliefs, up-bringing, ect.., they're simply ashamed of their homosexual urges and are lashing out.

I'm partial to that idea.

Allthough I'm tight on the term "Homophobia" I'm actualy quite loose on "Homosexuality".

In this discussion, if it's not too late, Homophobia {H} does not = 100% homosexual {G}, but more so: levels of homosexuality. {L}

Where {GB} = Gay or Bi:
If {L} = {GB}/x then let {H} respresent gay/bi tendancies. {L}/{G}

I think I did that right. I'd have to ask my professor...

But you get the idea.
Nobody is denying that homophobes can't like women.

It's simple...almost always simple. If someone says they don't like homosexuals...fine, they don't and therefore they are assholes. But when they pine and harp on it endlessly...well I think someone else has already said it "Thou dost protest too much"

:nana: go banana go!

I think the issue gets confused by the imprecise way we use the term "homophobia".

If we make a distinction between those people who truly fit that description, that is, actually have a phobia about homosexuality, it seems logical to conclude that anyone that afraid of it must have some underlying feeling that they might, at the very least, have some homosexual tendencies. After all, people with a fear of flying, for example, don't panic at the thought of other people riding in airplanes.

But the term has been expanded to become a catchall for anyone with anti-homosexual attitudes or opinions, and in that regard, there is no reason to believe that there is a connection between "homophobia" and homosexuality. There are those who believe homosexuality is wrong based on their religious or political views who may not harbor any repressed personal feelings.

I think Queersetti hit the nail on the head here. If we define the term homophobic narrow enough, it could mean people who actually observe some homosexual tendencies or desires in themselves and respond to this in a negative way.

Here is my theory:
I think one must look at the motivations behind anti-gay behavior. Many people are simply unwilling to accept homosexuality. That is more of a belief against gay's than it is homophobic. It stems from cultural additudes picked up over time. I do not believe it gets personal, and I do not believe these people go out of their way to guard against gay people. In large part, I believe this is a passive position taken against homosexuality. IE gay people are fine, just not in my back yard. Their motivation is their belief alone, and act out when it is threatened.

Homophobes, on the other hand, are taking this one step further. These people pick up on a prevaling cultural sentament about gays and react overtly to it because they sense in themselves some homosexual traits. They go out of their way to not appear gay, react negatively to the presense of a homosexual or the discussion of the topic, write legislation to ban gay marriage, act out with violence, etc. A homophobe's motivation is to hide their underlying fears that they are gay themselves. Sort of like a person who will go to any lengths to avoid being caught for doing something dishonest.

Thats just my opinion, I could be wrong....
