Is it OK to write a new story while finishing another?

ugh. I never brought this topic up. now the copyright fetishists are out in force. please make a different thread about this topic if you like. I was getting useful feedback until AlohaDave and MrPixel changed the topic.
Don't dig yourself a deeper hole. It's fundamental writers' ethics, not to continue someone else's story without their explicit permission.

This is also the way the AH runs: threads morph - one topic closes, another one opens up. Your hamster just stepped on a land mine ;).

If you did not realise that continuing another author's work is against Lit's rules, then @alohadave and @MrPixel's comments are helpful.
nowhere in this thread have I introduced that topic. aloha went into my bio, got a line out of it, and pasted it here for the purpose of derailing the thread. that is rude, and annoying.

if he was truly concerned that I did not know, why not send me a PM? if he had done so, I would have replied with an explanation that I now understand that I should not do so, and I would have thanked him for his concern.

instead, he chose to derail a useful thread with an unrelated topic. its just plain rude.

You don't think going into a persons bio and grabbing a COMPLETELY UNRELATED item is different from a thread evolving?

My hamster did not step on a landmine. Aloha brought a landmine into this thread, exploded it, and now everyone is pretending like that is acceptable and normal because.... why?

Thank you for your contribution to the community.
Is this sarcasm? An olive branch? A mispost?
Can't tell, but either way, I had no intention of getting into an internet mud fight about copyright nonsense. As such, if what you were hoping to do was close our back and forth, then I am quite happy to do so.

It's what people do. Folk get curious when they see someone new wander into the AH.

The hamster wheel is one thing, your dilemma for not keeping up with demand (your question was a fair question though, and you got answers); but the suggestion that some of these stories might not be yours is a big Lit no-no, and a regular topic in the AH.

You weren't to know that, and if you're lucky folk will cut you some slack coz you're new, but not if you keep pushing back.

...but not if you keep pushing back.

Is there suddenly something in the water? Troll juice? Second or third time this week we've had a noob "ask" about something that the rest of us know is pressing the limits hard, and after advising same just get a bunch of guff.

...sigh... 😞

I don't mean this aggressively at all, and I appreciate you appear to be trying to help me. However, I really am curious. What will happen if I'm not lucky and folk don't cut me some slack?

And what if "pushing back" is simply me having a different opinion than the norm here? Is that ok, or will the non-slack cutting begin?

Thanks for calling me a noob and implying I'm a troll. Classy.

But, can you point to where I "asked" about anything related to copyright issues?

As you well know, what happened is that Aloha went into my bio, found something to get offended about, and brought it in here in order to derail the thread. Do you see the difference between what happened and what you are suggesting? I am really curious.

We have some pretty nasty arguments here pretty regularly. Pushing back and arguing is fine. You'll fit in fine.

If you come across as not listening and keep moving the goalposts to try to justify what you want to do (e.g., using AI to write stories or skirting the underage rule), people with lose patience with you very quickly.

You complained about people hating you and your stories. So I looked to see if the comments were typical of LW posters.

One comment had what you yourself had posted in your profile.

Good luck, you'll need it.

Why?? Why do I need luck?

This is the second post in this thread with a veiled threat of some consequences if I "push back" or folk stop cutting me slack or if I run out of luck.

What is going on here?

Should I lock my doors and windows? What is going to happen??

There's likely to be a pile on; the thread will wander off into the legality of copyright versus the ethics of not using someone's content without their permission. Your original innocent and legit query will be lost in the dark, just before dawn, and you'll be wondering what the fuck just happened.
And what if "pushing back" is simply me having a different opinion than the norm here? Is that ok, or will the non-slack cutting begin?
I suggest you wander back over the last couple of pages of the AH forum and count the number of threads about copyright, and see how long they run for. There are several perennial (read: monthly, weekly) thread topics, that you can set your watch by - using someone else's stories without their permission is one of the biggies.

The threads nearly always started by folk wandering in to ask, "How long do I wait before continuing an ace story that's not finished?" or "Is it okay if I rewrite someone's story because I don't like their ending?" The answer is always, don't even think about it unless you have the author's permission.

I know that's not what you came to ask about, but that's where this thread is going.

Writing "copyright fetishes" and "copyright nonsense" doesn't help your case, because it suggests you don't think the matter is important. It is, which is why some folk are jumping out at you.

I'm suggesting you pop the lid back on the gas can and hope everyone else does the same.

I'd suggest cutting them a little more slack right now. Give them a chance. I think you're jaded from some of the very recent very trollish posters. I see similarities, but I'm not willing to burn that bridge yet.
I appreciate your generosity Old Prof. I still don't see how my behavior is trollish at all. Here is what happened:

1. I asked a question. Got a few on topic responses. Liked each and every one of them. Was getting ready to thank AH in general for the amazingly useful responses.
2. Aloha went into my bio, got a sentence there out of context from six months ago, and radically changed the topic of this thread. From writing advice, to copyright nonsense.
3. I would NEVER start a thread here about copyright stuff. I know it's a hot button issue that people are absolutely ridiculous about on both sides. I asked a question about it six months ago and learned my lesson. So I would have never brought that topic up. It's poison here.
4. Then Mr. Pixel responded to Aloha about the off topic issue, and thus doomed the thread.
5. Since then, I have been called a troll, a noob and implied to be a thief. I have also been vaguely warned to "not push back".

I am bewildered. Is my response really so surprising?

To be clear, he didn't go into your bio. You said commenters were hostile, he checked the comments on Pt 1 of book 1 of your story, and there is a comment quoting that section of your bio.

It was still his choice to bring it up here and thus inevitably derail the thread. He may found the barrel of tar and a bag of feathers by the road, but no one forced him to try and apply those to the OP.

I'm just asking if ethically, do you feel a responsibility to wrap up a novel before working on anything else? Am I being cruel to the readers who I have hooked into this story? Do I have a moral duty to release them from their suffering as quickly as possible?
Typically, I would say that moving on to another work while you have readers invested in something incomplete already published is disrespectful. However, you seem to be doing a pretty decent job of consistently publishing new parts to your stories and organizing them well with the Series Manager.

It's not how I would do things, and you may want to play around with different strategies for publishing in the future to see what your readers prefer.

There once were some stories here posted by me.

Along came a nosey fat dog that dug up my lawn.

And then there were none.
