That's what I figured- especially since I have such a diverse classroom- I thought it would be great to celebrate and recognize those differences by learning about them...

Marxist said:White people never get it and never will. American Negroes are a race straight out of science fiction. We've been damned into being regarded as reactionaries and have become reactionaries by persecution. No one wants revisit our slavery in-depth. Africans regard us as degenerates and war captives that they sold off to Arab traders. Yet how many Muhammeds and Abduls have been named in the American Negro community in the past 50 years? It's a kind of cultural schizophrenia. We are uncomfortable because we built a country but have only recently been included in it to a full degree. Our pedigree makes us survivors. Stacked like ricks of wood and made to lie in sickness and filth in the bottom of a boat for a very long trip, then bound in chains and separated from familial unit after familial unit. I bet my family has been in America 100 years longer than most all Americans on this board, yet when did they not only get the right but the ability to vote?
Were those parents that opposed you wrong? Yep. Real education allows one to see subtle differences and make informed judgements. But excuse me if I don't shed a tear for any consternation that some ignorant brothers or sisters cause. And if anyone wants to say that this is some kind of excuse they should know that that's the last thing we want or need.

I think I have a crush on YOU now……..

I see no problem in knowing one's origins. I also see nothing problematic in taking pride in the achievements of one's ancestors. For example, were I a descendant of Edison, Einstein or Shockley or someone like that, I would be proud of them and their achievements.Originally posted by Marxist
You can't hide from Black (and I never have tried to). Black to me is a color that my skin sometimes resembles. To the rest of the world it's who I am (interesting aside, "why do white guys always address me as 'man'? I don't call my Latin friends 'amigo' or say 'mira' at the beginning of each sentence). I'd love to live in a world where people judged me on the content of my character rather than the color of my skin but it just doesn't work that way. So I have to draw on the strength of my ancestors and family and see no problem in knowing one's origins.
We absolutely agree on this perception. Martin L. King, Jr. said that ever so eloquently in his efforts to end institutional racism in the south.Originally posted by Marxist
I do believe that everyone should be judged as individuals and I hope the next time I walk down the street in the dead of night and you see me walking in front of your car that you do too.
But how likely is that to happen so long as the adults around them don't act any differently? Because it's from the adults who raise them that children learn what is right and normal for adult behavior.Originally posted by Kypartsman
Yes I do understand the influx of new cultures into my old one, I see it daily. I only pray that as time goes by the children of today will overcome the teachings of their parents and learn to live together and not hate because of outward apperance or language
This admission is particularly sad. That you consciously recognize the prejudice and its attendant behavior makes it all the more so that you continue the practice and claim pride in it.Originally posted by Kypartsman
Vietnamese are my personal prejudice. I spent 11 months of my youth killing them and them trying to kill me. Forgiveness comes hard when you have seen your friends die at the hands of those who talk and look like the people I am now forced to deal with. My answer to that is to over charge them for parts. I don't want their business nor do I want them in my world. So I charge them 15 to 20% more than anyone else. Am I proud of this? Yes I think I probably am, otherwise I wouldn't still be doing it after all these years. I will accept the wrath from that confession and will remain myself unchanged. I have no desire to change on that matter.
I agree wholeheartedly.Originally posted by Kypartsman
So the bottom line after all this is, the place I described earlier only exists now in an old mans memory, and I doubt seriously it will ever come back. What a Pity

I asked one of my teacher's aides who is African-American about it. She said the same thing, but that she doesn't find it offensive. She basically said that the people who were offended were ignorant and that they didn't look for the reason behind the assignment- they just jumped to conclusions...
She also said that some African-Americans still see Africa as an undeveloped jungle and don't like to be reminded that that's where they're from. I don't know if that's the reason, but I'm just telling you one African-American educator's point of view.
