Is Virginia Insane?

In Mississippi it is against the law to engage in sodomy, to fuck a non human animal (no reference to whether or not an animal is allowed to fuck you), to engage in oral sex with anyone and to transport white women accross state lines for profit. I find no reference to the comment made above that it is illegal for a man to have an erection in public, though there is a law prohibiting indecent exposure. I'm thinking that has to do with obese women in summer spandex but who knows? Also off the subject but interesting, it is an offence of justice to use the Lord's name in vain on Sunday.

Y'all be good now.

As a lesbian this just makes me sick. I can give you a pretty good idea on how they would catch a homosexual in either of these acts. Adult entertainment or a gay bath house type establishment. It is not often the heterosexal equivalent of these type of places are raided. I mean when was the last time you heard of the local strip club being raided and people busted for what goes on in the back private dance area. But and this really goes for the larger cities gay clubs are raided quite frequently.I am just amazed at the fear and lack of understanding when it comes to anything gay exspecially when it involves a southern babtist white male. I can garentee them that we do not want them as part of our gay club. Their argument is so weak.Gays are wrecking the moral fiber of the country is what they say. Oh sure last I checked gays are surly responsable for high teen pregnancy, high divorce rate, the horrible gun problem , crack cocain, road rage, racial hate and any of the other things taking its toll on the morality of this country. What a fucking joke.AHHH sorry this just hits way to close to home and it makes me so angry. Until those of us that are upset by this kind of shit band together straight and gay and say stop it we will not tolerate this one sided bigotry we will continue to have to hear about this kind of crap. I can not do anything about legistlators in virgina but I always vote for who I think will keep the moral attitude out of politics and leave it where it belongs as our own free choice. Thanks for listening to my rant.

lmj, welcome to our lives. You are welcomed to rant anytime you feel the need.

And Dixon, if my sides didnt hurt so bad from puking my brains out, Id laugh at that remark. Youre too funny!

lmj - you've got it, babe! This is so unAmerican it makes me wanna move... Our founding moms and dads came here in search of a place where they could practice religion without persecution, and now all their great-great-great-great-grandkids wanna keep others from making choices in their lives, be them religious choices, sexual orientation, whatever. The political pendulum is making a slow, steady swing toward the right, and though I know it's bound to swing back, I'm afraid of how far it'll go before it starts to swing towards center again.

This isn't a gay thing. Whenever a group is singled out and denied the rights of others, we are all in danger. As the operator of an adult website, it's a scary time to be in business...

beebee, are you sick?

Fuckin Bruiser...

Well I live in the DC metropolitan area and I live very minutes from VA. I have a friend who is a cop in Alexandria, and he told me that he one of the guys in his unit arrested a couple caught doing that in a park at night. It wasn't so much that oral sex was being preformed, but for lewd public behavior. I think it just might depend on the cop. I'm sure that most would get a good laugh at the whole thing, but the ones who aren't getting any at home might take it on the pleasure seekers, so you never know. Totally obsure, law, but it can be enforced.
Sucks doesn't it. (No pun intended)

Yes Laurel. Got one hell of a bug here. Was feeling fine till yesterday. Fuckin bruiser.

You need to reread your history Laurel.

Puritans? Salem Witch Trials?

Ring any bells. It's not just the multiple (not so) greats that want to be the persecutor rather thant he persecutee, it started as soon as The Mayflowers beer supply ran low and they put in at Plymouth Rock.

The puritans especially left becasue they were being persecuted, but also becasue they wanted to do the persecuting themselves.

Check your Histroy, Weird Harold.

Now, to say that the Puritans left England so they could go to the New World and do a little persecuting doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. The Puritans went to the New World to be Puritans, and they founded a Puritan colony. But the next boat load didn't have 100% Puritans on board. And then someone figured out there was money to be made in the New World. And then the next thing ya know, the boats are coming in and there aren't ANY Puritans on board anymore.

But that doesn't change the fact that the Puritans did come to the New World to escape religious persecution. And, yep, the Puritans got nuts (for chrissakes, they were Puritans. You can only be who you are), so what happened?? Rhode Island. And then the Quakers came to Pennsylvania, and somewhere along the way the First Amendment was ratified, and then the Mormons went to Utah via Missouri and Illinois, blah, blah, blah,... Next thing ya know Jim Jones is in French Guyana and David Koresh is in Waco.

Point being, religious persecution is mostly a state sponsored exercise. The Puritans were the government of Plymouth colony. And over time the make up of that colony changed, but the laws did not. When the situation got too hot, people left, and next thing ya know you've got more colonies providing a more tolerant situation. It really was the beginning of the "American Way" and the "Frontier Spirit". Cotton Mather may have been more conservative than Reagan, but he certainly wasn't any kind of fucking Hitler.

Hmmm.. And the Salem Witch Trials had nothing to do with Religion. Underneath it all it was just one of the first of a billion ways that Americans have found to get undesirables off of good quality land.

So please be careful of your history. You've got all the world's knowledge at your fingertips, a little research doesn't hurt once in a while.

But Lasher, I thought history was often according to who wrote it just as truth is often according to who tells it.

I like Arthur Miller's account of the Salem Witch Trials in his play "The Crucible." His intent I believe was to relate this sorry episode to the McCarthyism witch hunting feeding frenzy.

The movie "The Crucible" has a scene which the play does not where the girls are dancing naked in the woods. Their story to explain their deviant behavior (and what's wrong with dancing naked in the woods anyway?) is that they were consorting with the devil. Now, if you Lasher, and your buddies here like slut_boy encountered the ladies of Literotica, led by EOD, dancing wild and crazy and naked, I rather suspect the outcome would be banging and not hanging. I mean, Dixon says he even has a hit list.

On the other hand you have the holier-than-thous like this Baptist in Virginia who would rather hang than bang. I do think this reflects the same sort of mindless mucked-up misguided witch hunting mentality to be found in The Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism.

During the witch hunts in Europe hundreds of years ago a favorite method used to torture a witch was to amputate her clitoris. Same mentality reflected by this Baptist dude from Virginia. I suspect he would personally delight in giving the guillotine and beheading an entirely new meaning.

Yes Lasher, history. The more things change the more things are the same. That's history.

There are certainly some pretty weird laws around telling you what you can't do. But there are also some strange ones telling you what you can do. In my town, there are still laws in place from the 17th century that have never been removed even though they are obviously extremely outdated. For example you can legally:

* Take your wife to a certain street and whip her if she is drunk
* Kill a scotsman with a bow and arrow if s(he) comes within range of the city walls
* Burn anybody that claims to be able to predict the weather on a stake.

I wonder what would happen if you actually did one of these things - mmm tempting when it comes to weathermen

All true Lasher. Putting a complicated situation like the evolution of the Puritans into the intolerant government of Plymouth colony into just a few words isn't simple.

You pretty much made the same point I was trying to though:

Attempts to legislate moralaity aren't new. They've been a part of America ever since Europeans got lost on their way to China.

(Yes, I know that's not historically accurate either. <G> )

New or not, it's still wrong.

I can understand, if not totally forgive, a certain amount of the cruelty inflicted 200 years ago - we as a species were so much more ignorant, so prohibitions against those different from us were a (rather flawed) method of self-preservation. The biological reasons for illness, the meteorological reasons behind weather, etc. weren't known back then, so I can see how it would be easy to blame an epidemic or a devastating storm on the actions of those different from us. Also, without understanding of human genetics, I could see how it would be easy to decide that those with different physical or psychological attributes were "possessed by Satan".

However, for anyone today to not realize that all human beings are part of the same species and thus equal in intelligence, ability, and worth is shocking. Substitute the word "black" or "Catholic" for gay in that article - is it still just a silly little law? And as there has been persuasive evidence that the brains of homosexuals do differ subtlely from those of heteros (whether it's cause or effect remains to be seen). Their sexuality may be hardwired in. So if gays do possess a gene that causes them to prefer the same sex, how can you justify penalties against them and not against Blacks? And even if it IS a lifestyle choice, how can you not allow them the freedom to make it when you respect the freedom of others to choose their religion, their hobbies, and their professions?

Sorry to rant... I've read about all the funny little laws that are still on the books in some towns - you can't take your horse out after midnight, etc. However, this is something much more sinister. This is a law that is being used this very moment to persecute a specific segment of the population. The legislature had a chance to remove it from the books and refused to do so in the name of "family values". It's amazing to me in that in this day and age we're still burning witches.

One of my favourite routines that Robin Williams early in his career in stand up was that sodomy is illegal in Alabama, but if youre from out of state and get pulled over they're gonna stick you in a cell with a big white guy called Bubba whose gonna sodomize you Go figger....Its like the BS here in Florida about the T-backed bathing suits, some moralistic group go together and thought it out and came to the conclusion that it offended them.....without asking anyone else it was herded through the local law makers and it was passed hands down, no vote no nothing....Godz I love America, land of the free (and the lame minded), if wasn't for places like this where we can have a semi intelligent discussion I'd go crazy...

As far as Miss Laurel's comment on burning witches and such, you've hit the nail right on the head. I am a firm believer in something else other than the Judeo Christain belief system and it bothers me immensely that people are shunned because of that. Yes, its just another way that the "religious right" is taking over a step at a time. The stupid little laws like in Alabama, Virginia etc....its just a rather huge plot to take any freedom we have away from us......Conspiracy theory or not, they are out there and they mean to do us harm..

Madam
I could not have said it better myself. Persucution is just that it does not matter if it is black, handicap, or religous it is still persucution. As a socity we get crazed about the "n"word being used we have found that all the words to discribe a mentally or physically handicaped person are offensive if you ever say any thing about anothers religion you are committing blasphamy but if you listen closely to anyone that speaks out aginst homosexuals there words are laced with venom that if it was describing any other group in this great country of ours they would be run out of town but because the Pat Bucanens and Jerry Fallwells and Dr. Lauras are just talking about a bunch of deviant ''fags and dykes" and people listen and the politicians vote for this kind of crap in Virginia. It is not only Virginia that has varing forms of this stuff here in Illinois I can be refused an apartment because I am gay. In several states in this nation I can be assulted for being gay and it is considered a non felony. My civil rights are nil in many states in this country because I am a person who chose my lifestyle. That is such BS I look back on it and I have always been gay and always will be gay. I was born this way and I will die this way. We are raised in a straight socity so many of us have had relations with members of the opposit sex that is enviromental conditioning it does not mean that one day Melissa Etheridge stoped by and offered me a toaster oven to join the gay clan so I chose to stop being straight because that oven was so nice. Trust me if it was a choice I would not choose to be on the side that gets persocuted and bashed by every ignorent fuck that has a public pulpit to spew hate from. Thanks again for letting me rant.

I certainly hope I didn't give you the impression I thought it wasn't wrong. It wasn't right then, and it isn't now.

I just wanted to point out that it's not a new battle, and it isn't going to be won soon.

However, for anyone today to not realize that all human beings are part of the same species and thus equal in intelligence, ability, and worth is shocking. Substitute the word "black" or "Catholic" for gay in that article - is it still just a silly little law?

Because my youngest daughter chose to date a black man, I had a long discussion with my mother about racist attitudes.

My mother just turned 75. For her generation, she is one of the most non-racist, non-predjudiced people I know.

By the standards of my generation (baby boomers), she is severly predjudiced.

By the standards of my daughter's generation (age 21), she is a racist pig.

Hopefully by the time my grandaughters genration is in charge of the world, my mother's liberal (for her generation) attitudes about race and homosexuality will be considered an ancient aberation. sort of like gladiatorial games.

Unfortunately, my mother's generation is still in control. Mine is gaining more control through attrition. and my daughter's generation is just gaining a foothold.

It will be at least 50 years before my grandaughter can get elected President and change the world. (The oldest is five now.)

With a lot of luck, and a great change in human nature, she just might do it in thirty years, but the last of my generation will still have a stranglehold on the world then. It will take some work, but my daughters' generation might let a young lady of 55 get elected if she's got enough support from her generation.

Things are getting better. Thirty years ago when I first voted, that law in Virginia would never have even come up for consideration of repeal or modification. This year it missed modification by a hair. Maybe in ten years when more of my mother's generation has made room for younger more flexible minds, it might get flat out repealed.

Well said, Harold. And in the big picture, three generations isa very short timeframe. When you look back at the changes in the last 200 years - in the last 50 or 60 years even - in the way humans think of and treat each others, it's rather astonishing. I'm just impatient, and when I see us seeming to take a step backwards (as in the Virginia thing) it scares me. As you said, at least it's being questioned. But I'm amazed that there IS a question - I thought we'd moved pat that. Since I live in Southern California - where everyone doesn't necessarily agree with each other's lifestyles but people generally leave each other to do what they want - I forget that in other parts of the country (and the world) communities are much more prejudiced and/or conservative.

Imj
Well said lady, and as Laurel said heretics of the world unite....I have seen a lot of my friends (gay and otherwise) harrassed by the local government/law enforcement/etc etc etc because of their beliefs, life style or whatever, and their civil rights get thrown out of the window in the process. I couldn't stand by and let it happen anymore, I got pissed off and I got vocal...granted I don't have a lot of conservative friends because of this but dammit we're all human, regardless of race, creed, colour, sex or sexual preference.

We all makes choices in our lives, unfortunately the choices those folks in power have made are to cow-tow to a group of people that are going to have their way and push their "moral" beliefs on everyone else.

I wish you well and I hope those of us that are trying to do something about this BS succeed and make everyones voices heard.

Arkane

some great contributions to this thread guys and gals; can't argue with anyone; even Deborah spoke my mind ...

So to lower the tone somewhat - someone sent me the following list from DC ... probably all BS and e no representation that any are actually true .... but amusing nevertheless; off to Guam I go!
-------
In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death. (Like that makes sense.)

In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror.

Muslim people are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or piece of wood at all times. (A brick??)

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Wonder which head?)

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time... Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry. (Think about that for a minute; is there any job anywhere
else in the world that even comes close?)

In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. The husband's lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired. (Ah! Justice!)

Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England - but only in tropical fish stores. (But of course!)

In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act. (Makes one shudder at the thought.)

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time. (This was a big enough problem that they had to pass a law?)

In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: prophylactics may be dispensed from a vending machine only "in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the
premises." (Is this a great country or what? . .. Not as great as Guam!)

LOL
Golden that was so excellent do you suppose in Guam that they have a unit that checks to see if the job was done correctly.
Inspect*her* 69. the virginity inspection unit. I would gladly send in my resume.
