Boo work!

Day 6/27 of straight days of work is about to begin. Sometimes I really hate my life.

How can you become happiest country of the world three times in a row with labor laws that allow this? Is it the alcohol?

The maximum here is 12 days.

It's covid. Add to that the big project that I'm supposed to see through that's very behind the schedule and has a deadline that cannot be extended anymore. And I guess when you work for the instance that makes the rules, they don't really apply to you?

It's difficult to find people who can do the type of job at the level that's required, and then they have to be vetted by the state security service and that takes some time too, so recruiting is a slow process even when things are normal. Covid also means that the state is not willing to spend more money than absolutely necessary, so we have a hiring freeze right now.

Everyone has more work than they're capable of doing and we're all exhausted, but somehow we're muddling through. I know my situation will be better after the big project is off my desk, so at least I have that to comfort me.

Nobody is telling me to work the weekends. But it's the only way I can get everything done that's on my plate right now, so weekends it is. I do work shorter days on the weekends, only 5 hours today. HR and medical services have been in touch with me because of my work load, this is not normal.

Three more weeks. I can do it!

That is a long time to work. I hope you’re taking the proper rest when you can, seela. I don’t think HR would do more than tell us we aren’t allowed to have overtime, here. There’s certainly nothing medical involved either.

I’m so much more relieved this week after ending some projects that went on longer then they ever should have. I can’t imagine how you’re holding up. Please take care. :rose:

Where I work we have to get a written permission to work the weekends and evenings after 7:30 and it's sent to HR and they monitor the hours.

My department works so much overtime, evenings and weekends that the HR has how said they won't approve the hours anymore. Which is ridiculous, because who's going to do all the work then? We don't log in all the work as is, so it's only bound to get worse if the HR gets more involved in this. The only way that the situation can be fixed is to bring more people aboard, but that's not possible either, so... The mood around the office has started to get a little tense to say the least.

I have vacation lined up in January and I'll probably be able to take off a day here and there before that in November and December. I'll manage.

My company is offering overtime right now. I haven’t signed up even though it would really help. It would have helped when I was drowning in work that wasn’t even mine. Be the only Cross-trained employee for certain things and have a boss that can’t make up their mind and nothing will get done. That pissed me off more than anything so end of the work day I would say fuck it and just logout (from home).

Though, now that they shifted work to the appropriate Team (yes, the work I did solo is going to multiple people) I can focus on my real job and I might actually consider the overtime.

Vacation! Any plans or just relaxing at home? My vacations this year have all been “staycations” and home projects.

Sounds like you did the right thing by not doing other people's jobs!

I only have to do my job, but there's just so much of it lately because of covid. I really hope the situation will calm down before February next year, because one of my coworkers will start her maternity leave than and it'll take some time to get her replacement up to speed.

I don't have any vacation plans. I'll probably just stay home, because the virus situation isn't looking much better globally. I've done little trips to other towns near here, so maybe that's what I'll do in winter as well.

I've worked as project lead several years myself. And I'm elected workers council member, now for..12 years or so, which is the reason that this triggers another pet peeve. These stories are always the same.

The truth is:
Nobody will thank you for doing this or if they do, the thankfulness will last at best till the start of the next project. At worst you are the scapegoat. This is just the corporate version of employees enabling something broken, like the wife enabling her alcohol-addicted husband.

"It's covid.", "We can't do anything about it due to the freeze.", "We can't extend the deadline." ... they are just lies.

Some people sacrifice their health to become a better worker bee, some people sacrifice other good things in their life.

It's never worth it.

Rant over.

I agree with most of what you wrote. The situation is not ideal, everyone knows it. A lot of good patterns and behaviors that were built up since the previous shit show have gone down the toilet. No one wants this to become the new normal.

But I'd also like to point out that at least in my line of work there really are deadlines that can't be extended without very bad consequences. It's not a lie.

This shit is always staged for the lowest common denominator. I don’t want to see another debate with split screen, or where they don’t control the mic based on who has the floor. This is why we have Cartman from South Park as a national standard for political discourse, because they design the conversations based on this dynamic.

I feel like we trusted Wile E. Coyote to protect our country only to learn that Acme Products is owned by Vladimir Putin.

Oh, absolutely. I know who I am voting for. I watched out of curiosity mostly.

I never realized how much masochism it takes to be politically engaged these days. Waaaaay too much for my taste, and yet here I am, still hoping the tremors will stop in time for next week's VP debate.

We have this type of discourse because Fox has melted the brains of a generation of ‘news’ viewers. The name calling, White supremacist misogyny, and general lies that network pedals have manifested themselves in this - a man who wants to stay president to avoid creditors coming after him. His only interest behind that is staying out of prison.

And because of the above, Chris Wallace got exactly what he deserved. It was a moment of reckoning.

Now, back to thinking about a Alpine slapping me between my legs.

Trying really hard to talk myself out of a food processor. I mean, I made it this long without it.

I purchased a mini chopper/processor and I love it. Great for sauce, dressing, fillings for wontons/ravioli - it’s great. But you’ve gone this long without one, I’m sure you’ll be fine. (=^ェ^=)

I think I'd rather have a mini than a regular size one. I used to use it to shred cheese but now it's usually only when I make hummus.

Homemade hummus

The mini one I have it so good for little jobs. It’s does more than enough for two people. I’m really happy I got it because it saves me a lot of time, especially when cooking after a long day of work.

Shredded cheese? Really? I didn’t know that was a thing! (o^^o)

Pre shredded cheese is loaded with cellulose so it doesn't clump. Not good for you but I'm guilty of using it a lot.

There's someone that I see on the tram almost every day that I find inexplicably attractive and would totally do, even though I'm not even sure what it is that intrigues me so.

It always makes me wonder if anyone has ever seen me and felt and thought the same. 🤔
