JESSE JACKSON, THE PUBLICITY WHORE

May I introduce you now to the good Reverend Wyatt Tee Walker. He's pastor of the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ. Walker, a former top aide to Martin Luther King Jr., allowed Jesse Jackson to appear before his congregation on January 23. Walker, who did not attend the event, insisted that Jackson must apologize for having an extramarital affair that produced his love child. Jackson agreed to repent during the service.

Instead, according to Al Sharpton, Jackson turned his appearance into a political speech. Sharpton said, "He did not repent. He did not apologize. He made a political speech. He never referred, even remotely, to the scandal."

Walker viewed a videotape of the service 10 days later and was furious. He fired off a letter to Jackson, saying that the church's credibility had been damaged. He added, "Your addiction to the need of media attention seems to be fatal and you have fallen into the practice of using people for your advantage and personal aggrandizement....Please know that your relationship with me and Canaan cannot be repaired until you make a public or written apology. I will not allow you to disrespect my person or the people I serve. Until such time, please do not call me or ask for my assistance in any manner."

So, because Jesse Jackson can't resist using a church service to promote his own politics, he's banned from one of the biggest churches in Harlem.

But then again, did you expect any better from the Sloganmaster?

I find the man utterly distasteful. He may have started out with true intentions, but he has let the power of politics consume him and is a mere caricature of his former self. I only hope that his son (a Representative) will not fall prey to the same fate.

On a side note, Todd, what's with the all-caps thread titles?

Nothing will change till you find some Black leadership that will speak out about the 70% of Black children born out of wedlock instead of being part of the problem like "Reverend" Jackson.

Very true. did you see the debate on Point/counter point on CNN last week between Some secretary of education and Jerry Falwell. Not that I like Falwell that much but he relly drove home that point you made and left the black woman stuttering.

Her basic arguement was because kids are born out of wedlock the schools should teach them about safe sex.

Falwells basic arguement before he went medieval or her was educate the parents and kids to be abstinant{sp} until mariage and you won't have kids being born into single parent homes.

here response was, "but, but , but...." then spouted some statistics of single parent blacks having kids.

Falwells responded of course you have large numbers of single parent homes , your teaching the kids its alright to have premarital sex and not worry about consequences.

It was a laff riot.

Oh, don't get me started. Pre-marital sex does not guarantee pregnancy. Ignorance and immaturity cause unwanted pregnancies. I attended a conservative high school where sex "education" was crammed into one week during our semester on general health. The basic outline of our education - stilted discussion of the reproductive anatomy, followed by a lecture that abstinence was the only option available, then on to vivid pictures of venerial diseases, followed by another lecture on how sex must be saved for our one true love after marriage.

What I found so ironic was that - sitting in the midst of this class - was a pregnant sophomore that honestly was not sure how she got pregnant. Her parents were such religious zealots that they kept her completely in the dark - sex was something that she was supposed to learn about on her wedding night. Our teacher was forbidden from mentioning any safe sex alternatives, all the while staring at a bewildered sophomore. By the next year, I knew of another teen from that class that was pregnant.

My point - ignorance is not bliss when it comes to your health or the risk of pregnancy. Falwell and his cronies have their heads in the sand. Openly instructing children about sex and its consequences will keep many more away from it before they are ready than simply demanding allegence to abstinence.

Well, THAT'S a laden and sweeping statement if I ever read one.

For the record, WD, what exactly is wrong with having children out of wedlock? It's 2001, in case you've not noticed.

Lack of a marriage certificate does not mean the absence of two parents. In addition, single parents are capable of being good parents.

What, exactly, is your point?

I wasn't going to say anything about what WriterDom said coz it gets me riled up but DB brought it up so....

I was born out of wedlock, I was raised in a single parent household, I had a great childhood, I've turned out to be a fairly decent individual.

I'm really sick of people putting down people who did what my Mom did because it doesn't mesh with their bullshit, antiquated notion of what a family should be.

My point is that these aren't educated 30 yr. olds with jobs, but 14 and 15 yr. old girls having multiple kids by different fathers before they are 20.

Teen mothers are a good thing? think again

Teen mothers are less likely to complete high school, (only one-third receive a high school diploma) and more likely to end up on welfare (nearly 80 percent of unmarried teen mothers end up on welfare).

The children of teenage mothers have lower birth weights, are more likely to perform poorly in school, and are at greater risk of abuse and neglect.

The sons of teen mothers are 13 percent more likely to end up in prison while teen daughters are 22 percent more likely to become teen mothers themselves.

Yeah, my bitch was about the criticizing Women who have children out of wedlock. Teenagers who get pregnant are probably too young and we should take legitimate steps to see how we can lessen their number.

But if you were referring to Teens, why dump on Jesse? He's not a teenager, neither was the mother of his child.

Jesse got off pretty easy. Can you imagine if one of the white conservative ministers that dabble in politics had done the same thing?

I just think stronger families would solve many problems. And not just two parent families but involved parents. I certainly didn't mean to stir up the single moms.
