MS has alway relied more on marketing and market dominance than on quality. Gates lowballed the bid to write IBM-DOS to freeze out the really good operating systems -- like CP/M-86 and Unix -- and rode IBM's reputation to market dominance. M$ has ENVER been the "best," just the most market savvy.

Also, Win 3.1 wasn't an "operating system" it was a GUI for MS-DOS. Windows didn't really become an integrated operating system until Win 98.

as I recall an autoshop, and for 100$, which for the timeframe translation, works out to be about $1600 tops

I'm pretty sure that's an urban myth -- as far as I know, BG bought out his original programming partner to gain sole rights to DOS. I'm not fond of BG or M$ but he DID start out as a systems level programmer.
 
I saw "Pirates of Silicon Valley" BG is big brother. I always thought Jobs was a better guy. :)
