I just downloaded this and first thing it asked was for my phone#!!

I really like Telegram a lot, especially because you can move seamlessly between devices including computer. Plus you can send sexy gifs from Tumblr etc which was a huge pain on Kik. I'm pretty sure you need your phone number to sign up but it's easy to hide it afterwards. You just have to take that extra step in the security settings.

Telegram is good and totally encrypted, otherwise I use Skype. And yes you can hide your number on Telegram plus I love the secret chat option, it self destructs after the time set or as soon as you both leave. You can also remove pics after sent which is handy too.

Yes!! And you can edit your messages - gotta catch those typos before they read the original of course but it's nice to be able to fix things. Or delete if you have insta-regret!

I hate that Telegram accesses your contacts and automatically shows your contacts on the app that you have it.

Can you make it where your contacts can't see you have it? Just curious

From some quick reading it seems like Wickr is the best alternative. No phone number required, private, etc. Same username there.

There are several other chat apps available. It’s a case of finding the least crappiest one! Kik fits the bill for chatting and swapping pics really well. I’ll have to take a look at Line and see what it’s about.

Wickr looks like it might be a good solution: they stress security and anonymity, and have voice and video options for people who are interested in such things, so that's good. I'm not letting it near the contact list on my phone, though, so I'm hoping I can figure out if people from here can be found for chats without that. (Allegedly there are desktop apps too, which I am going to look into in a second.)

I'm sad about this. Skype randomly shows me visible when I don't want to be. I really only use snapchat for my daughter. Messages disappearing means I often forget what I was talking about if it goes a while between conversaton.

You guys should try discord. its something mainly used by gamers and doesnt use phone numbers and stuff. i use it to chat with a couple of people. i feel like pics may be a little slow to get delivered but thats probably my internet. theres a pc version as well as a mobile version and it allows voice chat and video chat. its like a better version of skype since it was initially made for gamers.

I don’t really understand what the problem is with Skype... you can make yourself invisible if you don’t want to be seen and I find the video function works better than Kik. You can also remove photos from both ends of the conversation. The problem with having Kik is its reputation which is sleazy to say the least. I’ve read a few accounts of relationship breakdowns where the spouse has found Kik installed and turned detective. Skype at least has non sex obsessed users ( I know right ? Weird) who give it an air of respectability.

My best friend separated as she found a Kik account on his work phone with dirty chat on it. I use it just to chat and see my grandkids personally. I tried Skype but it kept freezing on me in mid chat...
