He didn't want to listen to arguments about the 1,138 federal benefits denied to same-sex couples, he just said that marriage was terrible and awful. It really pissed me off that he couldn't understand why some people WANT to get married even though they CAN'T.

Personally, I think that marriage and government should have nothing to do with each other. The government should only endorse/enforce civil unions. A marriage would be a personal or religious vow along side the legal contract of a civil union.

But seriously. You're right. But think about it: hasn't the government ALWAYS interfered with church? Think about it: missionaries in the 19th century, were always sent by the U. S. government. The Catholic church is a major part of several different natianal governments, and just look at the Pope (although he basically has his own government, but look at the people behind the people that raise him up or whatever).

Just some thoughts.

But yeah, I agree: one shouldn't have anything at all to do with the other.

well, I'm talking strictly about the US government.
The separation of church and state doctrine, though implied in the constitution, isn't explicitly stated, and so it has evolved over time, more and more as the religious body of america has become more and more diverse. Many of the issues that come up today are th9ings that, in the 19th century, just wouldn't have occured to people. I mean...I'd bet that over 95% of all people in america in 1850 were judeo-christian.

And remember, most countries don't have such a concept, so it isn't surprising when, say, the catholic church has power there.

With any luck, within our lifetimes, religion will become a private thing, and not interfere with how the country works.

I think you've confused the State interfering with the Church with the Church interfering with the State. AND no, I don't think they are the same thing at all.

No, the seperation of Church and State in this country is not explicitely stated in any formal document, but it is not only implied but has been upheld by the USSC in several instances.

What bothers me the most has been how the "Religious-Right" (which is neither in my book) has so successfully confused "Legal Marriage" with "Holy Matrimony" and how so many citizens have taken that bait, Hook, line and sinker. That just shows me how we've learned to accept mediocrity more so in the past couple of decades that ever before.
When we've gone from a nation who knew all too well, but really didn't want to hear about our Presidents who ALL had affairs, so a nation who all too willingly Censures a President because of an investigation gone too far then we allow our USSC to determine who our President is for us...that shows how we've slipped as a nation. How we have simply become so complaiscent that we've allowed pure bullies to take over.

Come on, here we are in 2007 and there are still states which do not protect the rights of all their residents in matters of employment, housing and even temporary loggings? In this day and age and we still have to argue for basic human dignity for one specif group of people because the majority has allowed descrimination to become policy?
When did the Constitution get re-written and no one noticed? Didn't our Declaration of Independence say: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

Since when did that get changed to "...that all men, with exception to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, queer and questioning, those who are living below the poverty level, those who cannot speak for themselves, those who are disabled, those who don't speak English and anyone else we deem as "unworthy" at the time: are created equal..."

I don't know about anyone else here, but I find this beyond insulting.

Can't envisage any circumstances - they leave me completely cold in those senses.

Can't imagine there's a remotely serious genuine answer to that...I suppose, being able as a woman not to have to spend £250 on a handbag to avoid losing face publicly.

Depends on circumstances...I probably have some maternal instinct somewhere.

It's probably simpler being straight, but I'm wary of lesbians overly stressing this view of the world.

Not really, no. We're more eccentric and less uniform than films suggest. But does Hollywood portray an accurate picture of cartoon rabbits, or spacemen, or spies?
