Nixon then appealed to white conservative/racist voters with the Southern Strategy. This led to a general exchange of constituencies -- socially liberal "Rockefeller Republicans" moved over to the Dems, the white Dems who had made up the party's "Solid South" since the Civil War moved over to the Pubs -- sometimes, with a stop on the way at George Wallace's American Independent Party.
