If you are where I think you are (Chicago LAND rather than the city proper) it's somewhere which would be pretty much second to LA for hell on earth without a car. A cold hell on earth. Chicago itself is weird, because there are definitely times and places you WANT a car, but driving around is an act of insanity.
I had a 45 minute train commute to get into Manhattan as a kid, which is where everything was happening.
I will never live in a city I can't afford to be in the center of again. Even if it means I have to move to Duluth. That's my personal brand of weird.
My TV is almost never on, but my comp heats up as I work, let's put it that way.
You're right - I'm about 25 miles from the center of the Loop and I've had commutes ranging from 10 seconds (presently and for the last 6 years) to 90 minutes. While I was in the city the other day I was pondering what it would be like to live in a comfortable north side neighborhood. We wouldn't need our car anywhere near as much, of course, but we'd still need one to visit friends and family in the burbs, for various work responsibilities and such. That means that one has to pay extra for a place with parking and then deal with the nasty congestion that has become Chicago.
Whilst doing this pondering, I thought about using an electric car. Since a battery-operated car has to be plugged in regularly, one has to have a more or less private garage for access to AC power. That's very rare for people who live in multi-family housing. There's going to have to be some serious thinking done about how to integrate electric cars into city living.
I love your suggestion about living in a modest sized college town. I know Ames, Iowa and a few other college towns pretty well and they can be fairly pleasant places to live. Colleges tend to attract artsy entertainment and generally some good eating as well. And, as a confirmed old fart who's not too many years from feeding the pigeons in the park, I see some health benefits from having the opportunity to watch pretty young coeds walking the municipal grounds.
