This isn't the first time it's happened. And yet there were still knots in my stomach.
Ran into the ex while shopping today. Seeing him waiting at the door (he's a greeter, so he was exactly where he should be) gave me a moment of panic. That look he gave me; it made me feel like a squashed bug on the pavement. For 12 years i was good enough to pick up him off the floor when he fell out of his wheelchair, fixed his meals, feed him, washed his dishes and clothes, helped him bathe, and wiped his ass after he used the toilet. But I wasn't good enough for him to remain loyal to.
I politely smiled at him as i would any other greeter, waved, and walked by thinking "you have no idea what you passed up, pal."
So thank you, everyone, for helping me strengthen my armor. Never knew you were doing that, did you? But each and every one of your comments has validated who I am and what I can offer. I can't thank you enough.

By the way, I read a LOT as a kid and still do. Spent a great deal of time in libraries. Had you been there at the time, they would have had to drag me out!

By the way, awesome choice to have Willa Cather as part of your backdrop. Terrific author. My Antonia and O, Pioneers! are two great books about strong, intelligent women...
