Eric Forrest - 39, dark brown hair, blue eyes, 6’, about 190 pounds
With a final mouse click, Eric finalizes the arrangements for the trip to the Grand Caymans. Turning away from his computer screen and back to the pile of work on his desk, he thinks, “a week without the kids will be fun, strange but fun.” He finishes up his day, moving papers from one side of his desk to the other, making sure that the proper widgets were ordered and delivered, in general surviving another soul sucking day at the office. He needs this vacation, not only for the opportunity to spend a week with his wife while the kids stay home, but also for the week away from work.
On his commute home, his mind drifts. Twenty years ago, majoring in Economics and enjoying the life of a college student, he never would have thought that at the age of 39 he’d be stuck in what seems to be a lucrative, but mind numbing job. For that matter, at that point the thoughts of a family and a nice house didn’t seem to be “boring” either. Instead, here he is and things just don't seem "right", things just seem “blah.”
He feels badly about these thoughts, after all he loves his wife, he loves his kids, his job usually is fulfilling. Maybe it’s the impending birthday. If you’d asked him before, turning 40 would be no big deal. “Age is just a number” he would often tell people, who asked him if he was worried about turning 40. Instead here he is thinking life is “blah.” “My god, am I one of those guys? Am I having a midlife crisis?”
As he turns onto his street, he sees his wife’s new car in the driveway and his 14 year old son playing basketball with a friend. Instantly his thoughts flee and a smile fixes in place. He IS glad to be home.
Dodging an errant basketball, he slips into the kitchen through the backdoor. Still smiling, he sees his wife and daughter at the kitchen island, working on dinner. Stepping up, he gives his daughter a hug and his wife a hello kiss. “Guess what?” he whispers in her ear, “everything’s set, we leave in a month.”
