Sales, exposure, relevance. I think they also wanted to take a stand, but at the end of the day, it's a business. People are talking about them.

With all the online porn around, I don't think anyone has thought of SI as a jerk off publication in a long time.

For me, it wasn't that she posted in 'garb'.
I would understand that SI is trying to expand their market and the Muslim community deserve to be catered to as well.

It was her lascivious, sexual pose that startled me.
It gives a confusing message
as opposed to a woman who just posed straight up, smiling for the camera.

I really don't think "SI is trying to expand in to the muslim market".

I think SI is trying to be "edgy" and figured at the very least it would draw attention. The model in question has already posed in the same garb for beauty pageants.

As far as "lascivious, sexual pose"?

I suspect that they would be more likely offended than greatful to SI.

Yeah, I think that would be one of the most plausible explanations.
And increase sells through controversy & ambiguity,


Most of the social media comments show that people interpreted it as trying to appease Islam, or to oppose Islamophobia.
Which didn't make sense to me, because those sexual poses would anger most devout Muslims.
If I wouldn't know better, I'd think that they intended the opposite: to give the finger to Islam by saying "Screw your misogynistic stance, hijab shouldn't be about 'desexing' women."

Has SI illustrated the devout Muslim athletes who would rather take a loss than compete against a Jew and take the chance of losing?

There is no brave, noble and beautiful religion. Only various degree of orthodoxy. Sometimes harmless. (Like dat suit.) Sometimes stupid. (Often a combo.) Sometimes fucked up. (Again, often a combo w stupid.)

Islam, at this point in history, has more of the latter than average. And more of the latter than 40 years ago.

Now... one can yuck it up on the Internet and get one's hate boner on, or one can examine the causes of this trend and what could be done to change it's course. But you know, one of those would actually require thought.
