Mandy, Mindy and Me (Closed Thread)

Melinda

"Just okay?"

Mindy nodded vaguely and kept her eyes locked on the letters that swam before her eyes. She tensed, knowing from the tone of her sister’s tone of voice that there was going to be trouble.

"Stop hiding behind that damned book!"

The beloved book was wrenched from her grasp and ditched unceremoniously on the floor.
Mindy wanted to object, but did not dare. Instead she dropped her eyes, feeling exposed and naked to Mandy’s angry stare.

"I want to know what happened, exactly what happened."

Her voice and body language brooked no opposition.
Mindy’s eyes travelled longingly to the book on the floor.

"Min.. Come on, don't do this. Just tell me the worst and we'll see about making it all better."

The coaxing did not convince Mindy this time.

"Please tell me you didn't tell him anything damaging?"

Mindy’s eyes widened in alarm. She shook her head in automatic denial.

”No … it was just … talk … “

She hazarded a glance upwards and saw Mandy was still waiting for details.

”We spoke about … daddy … a bit … well … he did … “

Mindy almost felt the frown.

”Just that it was him who had arranged for me to see this doctor… that he must think that there was something … seriously … wrong with me if … “

She hesitated and continued.

”But there isn’t … I told him there wasn’t … and he was ok … I mean … he said it didn’t matter what we talked about or if I talked or cried or …. “

She blushed biting her tongue.
That was the last thing she had wanted to confess to Mandy, that she had sat there crying.

”But … he… he wants me to go back … Friday … “

The tears brimmed over then.

”I did try, ‘Manda …”

Her eyes implored her sister for understanding as she used the pet name she’d used as a child.

”I just couldn’t remember what I was supposed to do and … and he doesn’t miss anything … he was watching …writing … asking things … until .. you just don’t know what you should say anymore … “

The tears flowed in earnest now.

”I don’t want to go back again … the doctor says I don’t have to … can’t you ask daddy … tell him … ‘Manda? Please?”

Mandy

"Crying?" She said it quietly, her gaze puzzled and troubled.

Now what was she going to do?

She knew her father, she knew her father well enough to know he'd never let Mindy out of it. Not until he seen some changes in her, or the Doctor himself called her father to tell him differently.

She sat down on the floor, legs crossed, just staring at the side of Mindy's bed.

"You have to go back?" She flashed a glare at that, but not for Mindy, but that damned interfering Doctor!

"Well you must have said something wrong if you have to go back.. And crying Mindy?" She sighed heavily. Now she had a new crisis to solve.

What puzzled her the most was this Doctor. How could he possibly ask her to come back? Mindy wasn't abnormal at all! Course she couldn't tell her Father that. No one could tell her Father anything. Not even his financial advisors could tell him, they could suggest of course, but in the end it was her Father's choice.

Stubborn man. Her father, this doctor and just the world in general.

Mindy heard her sister murmur and sit herself on the floor.
Surely she’d sort it out … somehow … like she always did.
She watched quietly not liking the troubled expression on her sister’s face.

"You have to go back?"

Mindy nodded sadly.

"Well you must have said something wrong if you have to go back..
And crying Mindy?"[/;I]

Mindy blushed shame faced.

”I know but … I couldn’t help it … and … the receptionist said that he likes to have the early appointments close together … to get to know the patient …”

She shuddered at the thought.

”I did try, ‘Manda … but he’s … “

She couldn’t put into words just what it was about that man that had unnerved her.

”He said … he said I had to open up and talk to him … that I was there to talk about whatever it was that I was troubled about … but … I can’t do that can I Mandy?

The sisters exchanged a frank look of understanding.
Neither of them could talk about their parents which was surely where all the frictions stemmed from …

Mandy

There was no way on earth they could ever talk of their parents to a complete stranger! Especially not revealing information, no that would be devastating... to both of them!

"Let me think. I just need a moment to think and all will be solved and no more worries and we'll get out of this in one piece!" She inhaled deeply, rambling so quickly that she ran out of air.

She jumped up, nervous energy mostly and began to pace Mindy's room.

"It's not that I don't think you could do this, Min.. But I know. Some how.. you'd screw it up." She continued to pace, thinking aloud and mostly stinging her sister, however not on purpose.

"You've too good of heart.. You can't lie, you can't mislead. You'd just cry and cry.. " She stopped and caught Mindy's face, crestfallen yet again.

"Oh do stop that! I hate that look! I think you use it on purpose Min!" She whirled away from her sister and kept pacing.

"I didn't mean you were addle brained, only that we need a new directive. A new plan of action.. Something to stop this roller-coaster from crashing." She fell silent, her mind working over all possibilities.

"And no more crying or I won't help!" She snapped at her sister, knowing already Mindy was crying.. However quietly she was doing it, she was still crying. And that would solve nothing.

"You forgot my instructions, didn't you?" She whirled around to face her sister and sure enough. Mindy looked about to bawl.

"Let me think. I just need a moment to think and all will be solved and no more worries and we'll get out of this in one piece!"

Mindy watched her sister pacing her expression one of expectation.

"It's not that I don't think you could do this, Min.. But I know. Some how.. you'd screw it up.
You've too good of heart.. You can't lie, you can't mislead. You'd just cry and cry.. "

Mindy felt distraught. Again and again she seemed to fail. She never seemed to be able to please anyone!

"Oh do stop that! I hate that look! I think you use it on purpose Min!"

The censure hit her like a slap in the face.
Mindy stared in shock.. She didn’t deliberately try to make anyone angry at her.
It was just that she didn’t seem to be able to know how to please them.

"I didn't mean you were addle brained, only that we need a new directive.
A new plan of action.. Something to stop this roller-coaster from crashing."

Mindy’s tears brimmed and fell anew.
She was not addle brained!?!?
Where had that idea come from!?!?

"And no more crying or I won't help!"

Mindy rubbed guiltily at her eyes and kept her head lowered so that her hair masked her face. No doubt her sister would soon tell her what a mess she looked.

"You forgot my instructions, didn't you?"

Mindy’s head snapped up at the accusation, meeting Mandy’s all-seeing gaze before she could hide her tear-stained cheeks.

”I didn’t forget … not all of them … “

She shook her head in mute objection.

”I did chat a bit … and didn’t say anything … much … about mum and dad … “

She confessed hesitantly.

”He said I could talk about whatever I wanted … that there was nothing to be sorry for when we were talking … he was … ok … but … I had so much to remember … I … just didn’t know what I should or shouldn’t say … it wasn’t like I expected it to be at all … “

How could she tell Mandy that it was one of the first times anyone had asked her opinion or shown an interest in her thoughts and feelings.
If only she hadn’t had a list of dos & don’ts …

”I did my best …”

She muttered defensively, her eyes moving to the discarded book on the floor.

Mandy

She wanted to sigh, she wanted to throw things, but mostly she wanted to shake her sister until some sense snapped into her head!

"Best isn't good enough in our world of perfectionists and demands, Min." She glanced where her sister was staring and felt her temper boil further still.

"DAMN IT! This is serious Mindy, not some mushy stupid poorly written romance novel! Stop staring at it, or I swear I will burn that book right here, right now." She placed her hands on her hips, defiant and glaring, daring her sister to look at it again.

"You have to give one hundred and ten percent..." she ranted instantly into one of her Father's famous boring speeches. About doing beyond the call of duty, about being all you could be and then being more. About striving for the unattainable and snatching it for yourself. The building blocks of life, of career, of character.. And finally she shut up, her voice dying down slowly as she realized what she had just done.

My lord! When did I turn into my Father?!

She felt rotten, she felt small and miserable for what she just did to her sister. But she wouldn't take it back, they never took anything back, because you can't erase words.

She would make up for it some how, but exactly how was the problem..

"I know!" She brightened instantly, her smile spreading.. Much like the devil might grin if he had a good idea.. A very good rotten, lying, misleading idea!
"I will take your place!" She snapped her fingers before her and grinned even more. If she could sprout horns..

"I will make it all better for you Mindy. For Mother and Father and get you out of this whole.. Head shrinking thing." She sat down with a bounce into a chair, gloating over her brilliance.

Mindy

"Best isn't good enough in our world of perfectionists and demands, Min."

Mindy flinched as her sister raised her voice, the obvious anger making Melinda retreat still further within herself.

"DAMN IT! This is serious Mindy, not some mushy stupid poorly written romance novel! Stop staring at it, or I swear I will burn that book right here, right now."

In her mind, Melinda thought up defences: Sense and Sensibility was an Austen classic, hardly a romance novel and anyhow what did her sister know about fiction?!
But she didn’t dare even look in that direction again for fear of causing more anger to be directed at herself.

"You have to give one hundred and ten percent..."

Mindy could never do the right thing, do enough or at least do what was expected.
Inside she could feel herself cringing, shrinking …

"I know! I will take your place!"
I will make it all better for you Mindy. For Mother and Father and get you out of this whole.. Head shrinking thing."

Mindy eyed her triumphant sister and summoned her courage.

”No Mandy … don’t … it won’t work … it won’t…”

She knew from past experience that whenever her sister pretended to be her, things always ended badly, for Mindy at least.

”We can’t do that … the doctor … he’d know … he’d …”

Her voice was breathless, hardly daring to defy her sister knowing full well that when she had an idea in her head she could rarely be persuaded.

”Please, ‘Manda … don’t … I’ll do it … I’ll get it right this time… promise …”

Mandy

"Oh bullshit! Don't give me that nonsense. I can easily handle a stupid shrink. Besides, what can possibly go wrong? We live in the same house, we have the exact same parents.. WE'RE IDENTICAL! Like he'd figure it out." She gave a little snort of disbelief. Her mind was set, firmly too in fact.

"I will do this, convince him there is nothing wrong with you and you can.. I don't know. Read books? Go out for once.. It won't be that hard, we've grown up together, I know you inside and out." Or so she believed anyway.

"Yep, it's the perfect idea." She grinned again, nodding her head 'yes' even as Mindy was shaking it 'no'.

"What?" She cocked her brow yet again, folded her arms under her breasts and sat back into the chair. "Tell me one reason it won't work and I can tell you ten how it will." She smirked then, knowing she was right, she was always right.

Mindy

Mindy listened to her sister ranting.

"It won't work Mandy ..."

She insisted quietly despite her sister's insistence.

"It never quite worked before ... not for me anyway ... we're.. different ... I could never be like you ... and you ... "

She halted abruptly.
Mandy would never behave as she, Mindy did.
But that was the idea wasn't it.

"I ... just don't think it's right ... that's all ... "

She shrugged defensively, knowing that none of her words really gave a reason. Perhaps it was just that she had a bad feeling about all this ...

Mandy

She glared at her sister a long moment, not because what Mindy said wasn't true, or what said upset her, but because she refused to see the valid reasons behind it. She failed to see how only good could come from this.

Yes, it was wrong. Decieving people was always wrong, but she'd done it many times, more times than she could count!

"I didn't mean for you to take my place Min. Just me to take your hour with this Doctor and set things right.. And you want to get into whats right and wrong here? Whats wrong here is Father sending you to a Shrink because you can't be what he expects."

That hit it's mark.

"Whats wrong here is Mother would do the same thing with me if Father allowed her to do it. So you tell me, how can it be wrong to get out of this without having to listen to one of Father's endless lectures?" She kept her eyes pinned coolly on Mindy, waiting for her to see the reason behind all of this.

Again, point made. Let's see her argue her way out of this one...

"And you know men only see what they want to see. Think this doctor can't be fooled? I bet you he can."

Mindy

"I didn't mean for you to take my place Min. Just me to take your hour with this Doctor and set things right.. And you want to get into what’s right and wrong here? Whats wrong here is Father sending you to a Shrink because you can't be what he expects."

Mindy watched her sister carefully.
Mandy must know that it was their father who was responsible for this.
It seemed that her father had spoken to everyone ABOUT her and yet omitted to speak to Melinda herself!

"Whats wrong here is Mother would do the same thing with me if Father allowed her to do it.”

Mindy blinked. Mom would … to Mandy … surely not …

”So you tell me, how can it be wrong to get out of this without having to listen to one of Father's endless lectures?"

Mindy did not comment. It was Mandy who was subjected to father’s lectures.
Her father did not even communicate with her on that level!

"And you know men only see what they want to see.
Think this doctor can't be fooled? I bet you he can."

Mindy nodded slowly.

”Perhaps … but … if I’ve changed … too much … “

She blushed as she thought how nervous and reticent she’d been.

”If you suddenly start … well… do you really think you could do it?”

Mandy

"OH you worry way too much Min. How hard is it to sit and sulk?"

She eyed her sister's closet with distaste.

She could pull off being her sister, it wasn't hard. But wear something from in there? All that stuff belonged to a librarian, not on Amanda.

"I will just sit there and look forlorn. Not speak much at first. Then finally I will slowly come outta this shell thing and tell him all is well." She flashed a wide grin of confidence.

It should be as simple as that and he'll report to daddy that I am just the quiet type and nothing is wrong with me and... er.. you and then we'll be home free!" She glanced again and changed her mind. She'd find a more subtle outfit from her own closet. It would be much more comfortable than anything Mindy owned.

Of course.. Mindy did own some sexy little get ups, but she hid them from prying eyes and she had yet to discover her sister's hiding place.

"It's all settled then. In the morning I will go meet this Doctor whomever and you will just vanish for an hour and.. I dont know.. Shop?" She smiled, kissed her sister's cheek.

Mindy

"OH you worry way too much Min. How hard is it to sit and sulk?"

Mindy almost gasped as the insult hit her almost as a physical blow.

"I will just sit there and look forlorn. Not speak much at first. Then finally I will slowly come outta this shell thing and tell him all is well.
It should be as simple as that and he'll report to daddy that I am just the quiet type and nothing is wrong with me and... er.. you and then we'll be home free!"

Mindy stared wordlessly.
Was that ALL Mandy thought she was about.
A shell to sit and sulk and then grin inanely to prove she didn’t have a serious problem!?

Slowly Mindy got to her feet and crossed the room picking up her book and stroking it lovingly.

”It's all settled then. In the morning I will go meet this Doctor whomever and you will just vanish for an hour and.. I dont know.. Shop?"

She shrugged and returned to her place on the bed.

”Sure Mandy … whatever you say …”

Her voice was tired, accepting, but had a cold edge to it.

”You do whatever you think best … I can disappear easily … “

It’s not as if any of them even noticed her anymore, she thought bitterly to herself.

She suffered her cheek to be kissed, but did not return the gesture.

”Like you said. How difficult can it be?”

She concluded, retreating into her book once more in silent dismissal of her elder sister.

Mandy

She smiled more now, Mindy was coming around. Finally!

Then she eyed her sister a little more closely. No, she wasn't coming around to see things right. She was giving in as usual. It worked as well, but she wished her sister could see how life would be so much more simple for her if she just gave in.

"Yes. Well." She turned to Mindy's purse and fished out the business card with the appointment time and date.
"In the morning then.. Ok. Good." She was a little lost at what else to do, so she'd leave her sister be.

"Remember to stay out of sight until around lunch time. Oh, and don't worry your pretty little head about anything. I can handle this Doctor." She flashed a smile and vanished out the door.

She spent the rest of her night hunting for something simple to wear, something closely resembling something Mindy would wear. Then she spent time with her pampering and trimming and painting and all those wonderful little things that made a woman feel like a woman.

She arrived bright and early, appearing as meek as she could manage to pull off. This might be a little harder than she thought, but she could do it. She'd fooled people before with her acting.

"You can go in now." The receptionist motioned her towards the door.

Nodding her head, she walked into his office and sat down without prompting into the exact same chair Mindy had sat in yesterday.

It had taken Dr. Connors some time to come up with some sort of intinerary for this girl. For some reason, even the smallest cases of therapy were some of the most complicated. It's easy to tell an obsessive compulsive person they have a problem, its hard to tell a pretty young girl she's just a little too shy.
Still, she that she had a problem. Connors could feel it, echoing in some of her answers, maybe there was something wrong. That was a step in the right direction.
Connors smiled as she came in, noticing her clothing. She dressed very conservatively, he had noticed that before.
"Hi Mindy. It's been a great couple of days. Tell me, what have you been reading?"
He picked up a book, Moby Dick, a bookmark was halfway through the leafed warn edges of the paper.
"Captain Ahab just saw the white whale. It's getting to the good part," He gave a smile, eyes big and waiting for her to answer.

Mandy

She stared at the book in his a moment and then looked down at her clasped hands. Now what?

She never read that damned book before, Mindy didn't mention she suggested reading material to the Doctor?!

Good lord!

What had she gotten herself into here? Ok she had to be Mindy.. Think meekness.. Think quiet, withdrawn..

Her eyes flashed with irritability. This was her hour, not his!

"I don't want to discuss a book, Doctor Connors." She fell silent, trying her hardest to look frumpy and boring. How did her sister pull this off?!

She sat up a little straighter, slouching hurt her back. And she was getting a kink in her neck trying to stare at her toes as if they were the most interesting thing on this whole entire damned planet.

Well.. She did buy these shoes at Victoria's.. A few hundred.. Was that a scuff mark?! She felt her irritation grow. Damned unpolished wood floors.

She was growing bored with this.. Sighing, she glanced up at him, met him eye to eye and tried to keep that meek side intact.
"Don't you.. Aren't you supposed to ask questions or something? I mean.. Well.. I still don't know what to say." She knew her sister well enough to get that line right.

"You said you loved to read... the classics," he put the book away, shrugging, "I thought maybe you had gotten time to this one. Maybe not. Well, no need, we can go onto something more exciting anyway. At least, something more of this century."
He stopped for a bit, writing something down, a smile came to his lips.
"Well, you can tell me about how the past few days have been for you. What's been new in your life, or what has changed... Or, we can talk about just about anything you feel the need to. This is your time remember."
He gave her a comforting smile, cocking his head to the side.
"We were talking before about your parents, and your sister. Did you talk to them last night, did they talk to you?"

Mandy

"No!" She said rather hastily. The denial fell short of conviction and gave away a small secret she didn't want him to explore. It was after all the reason she was here. To stop him from nosing around in their family business.

Nosey people bugged her.

She fixed a look on him that was not much like Mindy but she didn't even think about it.

"We ate dinner and went to bed. My sister had to work this morning as did my parents. There is nothing more to tell really." She clammed up again, waiting for his next line of questioning.

Maybe she should flirt with him? Maybe if she got him in the sack, he'd forget all this nonsense? A plan began to form in her mind along those lines. He was kinda cute, for an older guy. But he was maybe three years max older than herself.

Hell, she was betting she knew more about real life than he did. She almost grinned with that thought but thought it best not to give away inner thoughts.

"I don't know what you want to know. Things were the same. I went to school, studied a bit, read a bit and went to bed. Nothing notable happened." Maybe she should get into a long discussion about spaghetti? It was her hour, she could bore him with her idle pratter of useless shit?

"I just want to know about you, Mindy. This isn't something where I'm trying to get useful information out of you, rather just a time in your day where you can talk about, whatever you want to talk about. Whatever's on your mind. Last time, you wanted to talk about books, and ballet, and your sister. Now... I don't know, whatever. It's your money... well, your father's money, but it's your time. We can talk about anything from movies, to books, to love, to your parents."
She did seem more open today, more aggresive, like she wanted to get this overwith, but not by sitting there and being silent, but rather by hurrying up and answering all of his questions. Was this a new tactic? Hmmm, yes, and very different.
"So, what is on your mind? You go to school, you want to talk about that. Do you work anywhere?"

Mandy

She couldn't really answer questions about her sister's life, she didn't pay that much attention to Mindy's daily routine..

Ok, so now what?

She had to think and think fast but her mind drew a blank. What had Mindy said about her? Why did it bother her to even want to know? Because.. She had a feeling her sister said something distasteful about her and she just had to know.

"Well.. There isn't much to tell about myself." She gave a weak smile, she had to think even more quickly now.

"I like to go shopping. I read now and then, but.. well they aren't interesting enough to talk about." Was she giving something away? She hoped not. She really wished Mindy had been more specific about her visit.

"I keep to myself mostly. It's easier to sit quietly than argue." She paled a little, she shouldn't have said that!

"What about you Doctor? I don't feel like talking about.. m- myself right now. Why don't you tell me about yourself?" She flashed a smile and crossed her long legs. The skirt rose slightly with her movement, which she did on purpose.

"Me? Ha... you want to talk about me, do you?" he gave a little laugh, quiet in the large room, "I think you're getting away from the issue for a moment, Mindy. We're not here to talk about me. We're here to talk about you."
He sighed, pausing to write something down again. The last time she had been willing, almost willing to open herself up, now though... she seemed closed off. Switching topics, uninterested.
She wasn't afraid though. No tears, nothing, just hard and determined changes of topic.
Interesting.
"You do these things, shopping and reading, but you don't think they're interesting? Do you think your life's not interesting to talk about? Is it boring and dull? I thought you loved to read, had a passion for it. And shopping, who doesn't love to shop, if they have the money... and you seem to be well off, enough to get most anything you wanted."
His voice grew a little curt, "So, what is going on then?"

Mandy

"What? I didn't want to come here, my father made .. me." She huffed a little, her face twisting a little with her temper.

"And if I don't come here.. he'll find a new place to send me. So I may as well do whatever it is you Doctors want us to do so I can be excused from further appointments." That was a very reasonable comment and reason in her mind.

"I have rich parents. A sister who works more than anyone I know. I am going to college, not sure what I want to do just yet. My Mother would like me to be a lawyer and Father wants us in his business. So we're.. Well I am trying to make up my mind." What prompted her to open her mouth?

"I do .. or rather did like to read, but there isn't much time for that anymore. My parents think I'm too.. I don't know.. Quiet I guess. And think to 'fix' me. And that's where you come in. Tell Me how to fix it, or at least tell my Father when he calls for his report that I am normal." She sighed, her voice trailing off. She certainly wasn't Mindy, but he wouldn't know that. He barely met her before.. So he couldn't say she wasn't Mindy.

"I'm sorry." She said in Mindy's meek tone. "I didn't mean to rant at you. I'm just confused at what I should be doing here.."

"No, that is what these sessions are all about. All that stuff you go through the week, and you can't say to anyone else. Whenever you want to rant, feel like ranting. If you want to yell and scream and hit a pillow or throw a lamp, go for it. This is designed to make you comfortable and caring. Don't ever feel like you have to be anything less than yourself."
He wrote a note down.
"Some very interesting work. I think we're really getting somewhere. These sessions are largely, in your part, whatever you want to accomplish. You want to be more assertive, you want to stand up to someone, you want to point a direction in your life, that's some of the goals we could have. Like I said before, this isn't about fixing you... because there's nothing wrong with you. This is about you becoming someone you want to become."
Connors adjusted himself on the chair, putting his legs under him, and setting aside the paper and pen.
"What do you want to do Mindy? Your father wants you to do something, your mother wants you to do something, and even your sister, it seems, but forget them for a moment. Close your eyes, and tell me what you see yourself doing in ten years. Where you are living, what you're doing, what you like to do, what you don't like to do. Describe your ideal life to me."

Mandy

She wracked her brain, trying to remember what her sister's goals had been long before their parents turned into mad people.. Her brows furrowed as she bit her lip, then it came to her..

"I wanted to be an actress when I was younger." She flushed a little. While Mindy used to pretend to be an actress, Mandy would pretend she was a ballet dancer. But both those dreams were quicky squashed by their parents. Those weren't real careers. Unacceptable too.
"And my sister wanted to dance." She had a far away look, remembering their tea parties and afternoons spent in the attic, doing nothing but being who they wanted to be. It seemed so long ago, so long it was almost unreal.
"I could mimic anything I wanted to and very convincingly, or so my sister said. And I would watch her dance and throw daisies at her feet." She gave a little chuckle and then remembered where she was.

Instantly she stiffened up and glanced at the clock. Their time was up, she was free to go. She was certain she was making progress with this shrink, certainly he would let her go, no more appointments.

"Our time is up.." It was an excuse to leave, not answer any more questions she didn't have the answers to.

"Your sister seems to be a big part of your life... even your dreams."
Maybe there were replacement issues, with her and her sister. How interchangable were they? They seemed to have different goals, different personalities, but underneath it all...
Well, all just speculation, but he thought one thing was for sure. Mindy loved her sister.
Something good came out of all of this after all.
"Yes, if you feel you want to leave, that's fine. I would love to hear more about your dreams... being an actress. It sounds wonderful."
He wrote something down.
"Our time is done. Thank you, sometimes it just flies passed us. You know the routine. If you feel we've done what you've come here to do, don't make an appointment, otherwise, my secretary will give us another time to spend together. Maybe tomorrow? My saturday is more or less free."
He smiled, getting up, and walking over to his computer.
