Medick'l: Achilles tendon

Yeah, so ... under circumstances unclear I've obviously pulled my achilles tendon. And it tends to give me trouble mornings and when I exercise - running, jumping, climbing, that kind of stuff.

Any ideas? And don't say "go visit your physician", I have that one covered. :)

Just wondering if anyone has any XP with this. Anything that works.
 
When I started running last June, I experienced some discomfort in my right Achilles tendon. Here are a few things you can do:

RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). I mostly did the icing part because my discomfort was really minor.

Anti-inflammatories--don't use them as a crutch to ease the pain so you can work out, though. You might make things worse.

Stretching.

It's not uncommon for early Achilles tendinitis to be like what you've described--pain first thing in the morning. If it's bothering you during exercise, though, you'll probably want to switch to an activity that doesn't aggravate the problem or try resting it altogether for a while. If you don't nip it in the bud now, you'll end up with a chronic problem.

Definitely try stretching, even as you're healing. Try hanging heels over a step and lower your heels up and down. A orthopedic doc told me that once.

Stretching or yoga. I used to have that "runners knee" thing on my right knee from a couple years ago. I took up yoga a couple months ago, for the stress prevention and it has really helped! I not only don't feel any pain anymore in my knee, but I'm much stronger. I can do pushups now :D :D :D
 
Yeah, pretty much confirms what I've been thinking.

I was hoping for a magic bullet, but I guess there's nothing for it ... damn. Two marathons I've missed already. I hope I can get this damn tendon working again in time for the autumn season!
 
Oh FUCK. I just remembered where I got it.

Basketball. After several months of no basketball I played it with some friends in somewhat inappropriate shoes.

Fuck. Now I remember.

God curse that fat round ball!

I just cringed something fierce reading that ....

After 10 years of off-but-mostly-on tendonitis (due to 4x weekly ballet -- no real shoes + hard floors), I played in a pick-up volleyball game one Sunday morning. No warning up, no stretching, no nothing. A few points into the game I went up to spike, landed *just so* on my right foot and heard that telltale *POP* = rupture. Done for the game, and done for ballet (forever).

Moral of the story: Be careful! Listen to your body!!

BTW, how old are you? Even though I'm a chick, the incident I described above tends to happen to guys rather not unfrequently when they get into their late 30s or 40s. I was 36 and had been pushing it hard for over 20 years.

RICE is excellent advice. I wish I'd been more respectful of my body.

I spent something like two years doing alternative workouts because of a painful achilles. So listen to your body, do something else for a while - cycling, rowing machine, walking. But do not run.

Be smart about it, and you won't have to wait two years before it gets better. But don't sit totally still either - find a way of working out that doesn't cause pain instead - you want that achilles to heal, but you want it to heal strong.
