'Race' is a social construct, period. Ethnicity relates to culture, not genetics.

Some races are more prone to certain illnesses than other races, black women's bone density is higher than that of white women, asians get more easily intoxicated than whites do.

WHICH blacks, whites, and Asians? Each of those terms encompasses a wide range without common genetics.

We can say that certain communities in an nation or region show certain characteristics. We can say that low-status communities in any area will suffer more pathologies, regardless of their genetic background. And we can show that some seeming 'racial' likenesses are instead geographic.

For that last, we know USA blacks have higher incidence of sickle-cell anemia than other groups. But that's due to mosquito-zones, not Negritude. Those with two recessive genes are likely to suffer anemia -- but the gene mostly aids survival. Black North and South African forebears lack the gene. As I said, it ain't a black thang.

According to one geneaological site I'm descended from King Henry II and through him to several Gods and Goddesses. The divine descent is legendary but probably nonsense, but being descended from Henry II is shared by tens of thousands of people.

One very interesting probability model created by a demographer for genealogists, is that a child born in 1947 in England tracing back to 1492 would have 60,000 ancestors. Going back further to 1215, this child would find that 80% of the entire population of England at that time would be on his or her family tree! So anyone living in present-day England who traces his or her lineage back through English history would theoretically be related. This is why genealogists find so many people searching for the same families in the 1600s and earlier, and why we find so many "cousins" out there in our search. I've found hundreds of cousins in the last year while searching via the Internet.

Genealogy is fascinating, and becomes even more so when we make those human contacts in present-day times with folks as far away as Norway who are descended from the same immigrant ancestor of 1624. I've become almost blasé about new cousins - I expect to find them, and I do!

What does it matter if a white person identifies as native American to get a job? or if a white person identifies as African-American to advance her career? Why would it matter if a mulatto, raised as white in a white family, decides to identify as black for direct or indirect political gain? The problem with just doubling each year is that many of your ancestors probably share ancestors with the people they marry. That is particularly true in rural areas where there is a limited gene pool.

One of my ancestors had a daughter who was shipwrecked on the coast of what is now Holland. She married a local man who took her surname because the village only had five other surnames. By 1900 she had 2,000 descendants in Holland.
