Mermaid Story - surgery

Harpies would have smaller breasts cause they are lighter and better for flight. Mermaids would be chubby all over, including big breasts, to help with thermal regulation.

Of course man made mermaids can look like what ever the maker wants.

I know you like dark stories, but here's one that isn't necessarily dark.

No one wants to be tracked, or have organisations put stuff in them they don't know the full ramifications of. Unless it's "useful" to them, then they suddenly sign away their rights. We can see this on phones best. The majority of people doesn't care enough that their data is tracked, and that they store their private and work life on it. They post it to social media and back it up in the cloud. If you would propose this in the year 2000 and tell people this they would laugh abd say no ine wants to be tracked like that. That it's against the law. And now everyone voluntarily carries a device that records their every movement.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) come about in this future world. They don't just hook into your life, they hook directly into your brain. Lured by true promises people flock to the new product as it evolves. It starts small. A neural net on top of the brain. The electric signals registered are coupled with smart algorithms that allow people to quickly learn to control things. A mouse on a screen. To remote control a machine. Then to drive a car. Then whole new interfaces are created to navigate a phone, allowing you to go to websites, open apps, type, paint, zoom and scroll all with just a thought.

The technology improves. It can now replace certain neural pathways with fiberoptics. Neuroplasticity of the brain takes care of the rest, and the speed of many important nerves is increased. It causes faster thinking and reflexes, and these fiber optic nerves don't tire like normal ones, making people able to concentrate longer. People gobble it up in spades, unable to see the future consequences.

Eventually the final upgrade is installed. Transistors with wires a magnitudes smaller than nerves are moved into the brain with tiny biological engines, which are absorbed by the body when the transistors are in place. They absorb or release electricity at a nerve, or add/take chemicals in the synaptic cleft. This effectively allows them to not just monitor, but also have input into the brain. Phones become irrelevant as an interface device. Who needs a screen if you can directly stream images and knowledge into your brain?

As a consequence they have given full control over the brain and spine to whatever entity controls the technology. That means the final stage is set. The person richer than god plugs in with their own neural net. They find a likely candidate, and start the program. The person's whole experience changes. A VR experience more real than anything in existence washes over them, transforming them into a big breasted mermaid. The person who orchestrated it all joins the program, ready to do whatever they want with the mermaid.
