Does anyone else use this as their go to editor for their stories?

I’ve been on a writing hiatus for a while, but I’m actually writing something. And the experience on the same admittedly older computer is much worse, while using the online version of word.

I’m assuming there’s ai crap happening in the background that I didn’t want or ask for and that I’m not using, but it has these pauses every few minutes that’s driving me crazy.

Anyone else notice anything? I’m not sure how many people use it, but it worked for me acceptably well in the past.

admittedly older computer
How old are we talking about, here? 😅

Browser based cloud stuff is usually very ram hungry, so if you've got less than 8gigs (or if you have a bunch of other tabs and apps running) your computer might lag a bit.

Chrome is also especially memory greedy if you have lots of tabs open, so close everything but what you need, and also possibly try a different browser, like Firefox or Brave?

It’s certainly not shiny and new, but functional enough for what I use it for. Word online has been the dramatic change, everything else is at the same old slow speed I am accustomed to.

Keeping an eye on task manager and performance meter, and depending on
my mood process explorer (once I talk myself out of worrying about observer effect) the CPU spikes during the slower times, but it’s still the same computer it used to be. It didn’t happen last time.

Obviously, things change, to be expected I suppose. It was just a more abrupt change than usual, so I wanted to see if it was just me. ;)

Suggest you install Libreoffice or Onlyoffice, both are free, if you want to try local software instead of running things in the browser.

The online stuff runs in-browser and that can be a less efficient way to run software. :)

I have a paid Microsoft office software, but have just used my Google docs and Google spreadsheets since retiring. Microsoft seems to be constantly revising the way their softwares operate, and relearning things gets tiring. I still have a ton of docs and spreadsheets on Word and Excel, but prefer the free Google instead.

I don't use Microsoft Word. Might I suggest LibreOffice? It's free and open source. I use it for all my stories.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I have real office, I have libre office, I have lots of programs.

I was curious, that’s all, if anyone else who also uses office online has observed anything similar.
