Colleen Thomas said:NIn her case, the Dems on the comittee were deamnding accesss to briefs written by her as white house counsel. That's lowballing at it's worst, since they knew damned well there was no chance those briefs would be made avialable to them. And they sunk her nomination without even givng her the chance to demonstrate if she was capable or not.
Ironically, seh withdrew her nomination, rather than let that become an issue. And that, shows me she had some strength of character, no matter what her politics or qualifications.
She withdrew after Bush met with Bill Frist, whose leakers leaked to CNN that the topic of the conversation was the unlikelihood of a Miers confirmation and the need to move on.
According to CNN, Miers' supporters had already met to discuss an "exit strategy."
By blaming her withdrawel on the Democrats' demand for those White House briefs, she is able to claim the high road and say she's bowing out to protect the separation of powers. It's smart politics. The first evidence of smart politics anywhere near this nomination. It's face-saving for Miers and it makes the Democrats the villains who forced her out of the process, when in fact they were the least of her problems.
BTW, a caller to one of those Fox Network talk shows shook my world when he demonstrated last night that there are funny conservatives. (Funny on purpose, as opposed to funny GWB.) The caller offered Bush this "short list" of nominees to replace Miers: Judge Judy (female and Jewish); Judge Melian of the People's Court (female and hispanic); and the actor, Judge Reinhold.
Judge Reinhold was the one that made me exhale lukewarm Diet Coke through my sinuses.

Judge Melian goes to my gym and is really nice and funny, so I vote for her.
