Dan looked at his reflection as he adjusted his mask. The man staring out at him from the mirror was dressed in a black batman costume. It was available easily enough, with the new look for batman becoming quite popular after the Dark Knight movies. It didn't have any hard surfaces like the original costume. The thing Dan liked about the costume was that it was really quite difficult to recognise someone wearing it. The cape and mask hid the body and the face quite extensively, not to mention that there were sure to be at least a couple of other batmans at the party. Dan hoped that it would discourage many people from talking to him.
He tied the black cape around his shoulders. Though he was 6' tall, the cape just about reached his waist. His brown hair were hidden completely under the mask. Only his black eyes and his jaw were visible under the costume. Dan was satisfied with the costume, even though he knew Cara wouldn't be. Cara was his girlfriend since three years. No, thought Dan. She was his fiance now, even though he sometimes had difficulty remembering it. He had proposed to her last week, and she had immediately said yes. As if there was any chance of her refusing. She had been dropping hints about marriage since the last six months. Dan had given in finally. His friends had advised him to hold on, but the only friend he trusted had told him to go ahead and propose. She had been his best friend for as long as he could remember, and Dan couldn't even think of asking Cara to marry him if she didn't approve of the plan. It helped a lot that Cara had become close with her too. It had taken some time for them to bond once Dan had introduced them, but he was relieved when finally they did.
Which was how he found himself in this situation. Dan loathed parties. He was a quiet guy, a bit reserved with strangers, but delightful company among friends. He gave himself a final look over before turning and calling out to Cara. She was taking her sweet time getting ready, no doubt making sure that she looked perfect. She had decided to go as Catwoman. Her costume was skin tight, and the outer layer had a rubbery shine to it. It came complete with a hooded mask extending from the neck with pointy ears and slits for her eyes.
