Someone I know at work, a really great woman, asked her husband for a new dishwasher as a gift. Now, to me, this seems a bit impersonal, but my acquaintance is thrilled with her present.

So: Household appliances as gifts. Thoughtful? Or knell of doom? Discuss.


P.S. I'm putting this here because it seems too trivial even for a Darkroom thread.

Unless they can be used for sexual exploration, appliances should never be used as gifts. Too impersonal for my taste.

Plus, when I need an appliance, I need it now! Not on my b-day lol.

Okay, assume the old appliance works well enough, but the new one would have more features and so on.

It's been good. I've spent most of it working in the garden.

The thing is, in this case, she requested it! I was disbelieving when she told me, but she was smiling and happy about her great new dishwasher.

Haha. I don't think this one is being used for sex, but who knows.

I think the part that seemed oddest to me about this was the assumption --shared by both people in the marriage under discussion -- that washing dishes was entirely her responsibility, and so an appliance that would make washing dishes easier was something that would benefit her as directly as a more personal gift would.
