I have used "meta" storytelling devices in a few stories, and tere was een some demand for it in the run up to my 200th submission, which did hve a slight meta element.
Yet searching for stories with "meta" as a tag does not turn up many storieS.
Who has good ideas for meta tales?

My Geek Pride entry is at least slightly meta: a writer has to deal with his fictional creation when she shows up in the solar system with a giant spaceship.

The theory that the narrator comes up with is that she's been brought into life by the collective belief of hundreds of millions of fans.

The easy way is for the character to know the tropes of the story they are in.

For example:

Guy becomes aware he’s in an erotica story…but he has a chance to choose the type of story he’s in by manipulating the tropes

For example: he comes to realize he’s in one after he has sex for the first time and he can overhear the descriptions. Afterwards he starts picking up on tropes and realizes all the things he didn’t pick up before.

Could go a few ways

1. He is adamant about not getting married to his longtime girlfriend. Cause the moment she gets married it will become almost impossible to avoid falling into stories and odds are it will be a cuckolding one, or it will be revealed she’s been fucking her family, etc.

2. He does get married and one day his wife’s car is parked at her boss’s driveway. So he is in a dillema and tries to find a way to manipulate the story into his favor. He thinks if he goes in there and confronts her, it will be a cuck story. This if he just ignores it, it could be a number of story types and that’s more worrisome. Last thing he wants is it to be a non consent story where his wife is stuck with a husband who didn’t notice

But he then realizes the situation can be altered as if he tells a sob story to the first woman he sees, the rules of the narrative will change genres to allow him a pity fuck.

Course the twist could be he’s delusional and he just tried/or tried cheating on his wife to try and change the genre…which is not a winning argument in divorce court

And the Moebius twist: he throws a fit and gets sent off on an involuntary psychiatric hold.

As he's dragged out of the courtroom, he hears the narrator explaining that he does get an extramarital fuck, in the asylum, and it isn't at all what he was hoping for. Is that a delusion ... or is he aware of the author's voice? Fade out into misty swirls.

No, the narrator's voice says, "And so our story begins. Prepare to shiver, prepare to scream, prepare for horrors from beyond the realms of reality, as we take you into another chapter of.... Asylum of the Damned!"

"And now, dear reader, consider: do you hear my voice, telling you of your situation? Who is that who you hear rustling in your bedroom? Why is the skin on your neck standing up, as you smell unfamiliar cologne, hear the sounds of music playing, feel your heart speed and your blood race? What strange stimulation moves you, as the yet-unseen one approaches? Is this just a momentary fantasy, or are you my character, only now realizing your wonderful and terrible fate?

A writer of pretty straightforward EC erotica on Lit starts having weird success in their own love life. After a few encounters, they realize some of it seems oddly familiar. The names are almost exactly the same, the situations, how they met, everything. No matter what, it seems they get thrust into their own stories. But it's pretty great, the stories had always been their fantasies. The writer realizes that the stories are going in reverse order, which is so cool...

Until they remember the first thing they wrote was a non-con erotic horror piece about demons torturing the protag...

Race is on to get the story deleted from Lit, but the system is notoriously slow, and as the clock runs down, he does everything in his power to get it removed.

"You neglected to check the category first. Welcome to Erotic Horror. There's no-one here to read about your screams."

The Literotica writer, Biff_the_Wonder_Boy, lies there in bed, post-coital bliss grasping at his mind to drag him into slumber as he feels the warm, damp body behind him.

Suddenly he hears mysterious comments, seemingly coming from no where:

  • Fantastic Story! 5⭐'s!

  • Need help with your editing. Too many typos, had to bail.

  • The main character was kinda a wimp. He's probably a cuck.

  • Oh gosh, please write the follow-up. What happens next?

  • Meh... only four stars from me.

  • My new favorite on Lit! Will check out your other stories.

  • I think the woman should have had bigger tits. Ruined it for me. 3 stars.

Struggling to his feet, Biff walks over to his computer and starts writing another tale.

That would be pretty meta, writing about a writer who is writing the same genre or to take it to the next level, writing about a writer who is writing about a writer.

Hmmm…

Okay, writer is writing about a writer who effectively is a stand in for them…but this isn’t a power fantasy, their character exists to be cucked, humiliated and trampled upon. It’s not the writer’s most popular series but it’s the way they blow off steam by beating up a stand in for them.

Except the stand in is tired of it. If the writer tries to write them, they immediately get writer’s block. Then the stand in starts wandering their mind, going into other stories. Soon the writer has full writer’s block. If they try and type anyway it’s always gibberish.

Stand in then dominates the writer. If they ever want to write again, they need to do exactly what their stand in wants.

A writer writes erotica using an MC that's an idealized version of himself. Jacked, huge dick, tall, smells so good every woman he's with compliments him on his natural scent. He is, of course, none of those things, and has always felt a bit inadequate for his rather attractive wife. But she loves him, so she says, and he's using erotica to help him cope with his own inadequacies or something.

Anyway, one day, as he comes home from work, he sees another car in the driveway. A very cool, sexy muscle car. In fact, it's the exact kind he imagines his MC driving. He goes inside, and he finds the idealized version of himself talking to his wife, flirting with her. Now he has to try to stop his idealized self from fucking his wife.

Could either go HEA and the wife says she loves him for who he is, or the MC slowly starts taking over his life, everyone loves this idealized version because he's supposed to be idealized. But he's also very porn-brained, so you could have it ruining his relationships, life, things to that effect.

Or to make it even more meta, the idealised version is actually just himself when his alter ego takes over.

I suspect that most readers will nope out before finishing, though. And most of the comments would be along the lines of, "I was just looking for a wank, why are you making me do English Lit homework?"

Course I do like saving fun with the conventions:

Like we have a somewhat standard taboo story. Son turns 18 and it’s the day he gets made a man by his mom, sisters, aunt, whatever fucking him.

So he suddenly gets confused:

“Mom. Could we take a second?”

“Of course honey. I know it’s strange but it’s been our tradition for-“

“No. Well, I do have questions about that. We have a family who is okay with incest but we never had any unplanned pregnancies and nobody was a teen mom.”

“Well of course not sweetie. Who would think of such a thing?”

“What I mean is, before today, I didn’t even know what sex WAS. It’s like I turned 18 and suddenly a switch got flipped and suddenly I know what it is and I want it. On top of that, today feels like the first time I have ever gotten to have internal thoughts or examine my life.”

“Sweetie…listen close. This is the taboo genre. They’re here to see family members plow and maybe feel some conflicted emotions. Neither of us existed before the author thought us up and our two options right now are to keep this meta commentary going till he scraps the whole story dooming us to oblivion or we fuck and then we get to live blissful post coital eternity of imagined incestous hookups until the author writes an in Ill -advised sequel.”

“Oh. Uhhhh.”

“Look just come to mommy and let her use her big boobs to make you shoot out all of your existential dread onto her face”
