More PC Bullshit

I work for a very different environment. I imagine it would require some sort of corporate approval to add pronouns to our email signature. Hell, we had specific wording to let people know our offices are closed so please email or fax documents NOT mail them.

The pronouns don’t bother me. I struggle to remember “they/them/theirs.” And I still don’t understand why “folks” was changed to “folx” in some circles. I understand not addressing a group as “you guys.”

I like companies allowing/encouraging their employees to add their pronouns if they so wish. But I think a company should also respect a person’s wish not to add that information. I don’t have time me of those gender neutral names but I bet it’s interesting to see how differently you are treated when perceived as male as opposed to female.

It probably varies a great deal, depending on the industry, but little tests like this one have always interested me.

^^ tell me about it - I've seen both sides

I went for a couple of years with people mis-gendering me to my face and you can either get in a bunch over it and go through life constantly exhausted by your own anger or accept that mistakes happen. I used to see the panic in the eyes of a check-out teller when they realised they didn't know which pronoun to use for me.

Interestingly, the language of millenials and younger have largely dropped the requirement for gender based vocabulary. Businesses tend cling to formality and get themselves tied in knots trying to appear both 'respectable', by using traditional greetings and PC, by respecting gender boundaries. Whether you like it or not ( and clearly many posters here don't ) society is moving forward, language is changing because it never stays the same, and businesses need to drop the need for regimented formats. 'Dear Sir or Madam' and 'yours sincerely' are laughable anachronisms.

I still occasionally have people whisper to me "What pronoun should I use with xxx?" to which my reply is still "Ask them". Being respectful isn't PC, it's simply courteous. Taking offence over a small slip of the tongue or keyboard because the other person is of a certain age or is stressed, isn't going to foster a cooperative working environment. We all need to give and take, we cannot function without each other, so skip the histrionics and answer the damned email efficiently and lets each get on with our day.

I think it’s all crazy as fuck.

Elin Musk twitted “ pronouns suck” the other day and everyone on Twatter went batshit on him.

Over two words.

If the New Idiot Class were articulate and precise in their use of language, that would be one thing. But they’re not.

No. I stand by my use of the Word: ‘whatever’..
I dont give a damn if you identify as male, female,Androgynous, Bi,straight or a fucking 2door ikea kitchen cupboard with chrome handles.. But for fuck sake shut the fuck up about it and get on with living and being a good ‘whatever’ just as i do about being what iam..
Attention seeking is a pathetic waste of time unless its a life threatening situation.
The biggest problem seems to be that whatever you identify as is important rather than if you are a happy, productive member of the species.
Personally, im not a big fan of chrome handles, but whatever works for you yo.

Ikea with chrome handles? I feel like I don't even know you any more. :(

But seriously, being grumpy and disrespectful on the GB is one thing, not good but y'know  being the old twat that gives someone a lecture in the shopping queue doesn't look good, it changes no one's opinion except to convince everyone in earshot that old people are twats and have to be tolerated, not celebrated. Some of the most exciting and inspiring people I've met have been in their 70s because they were still fascinated by the world, interested other people and cultures and had an amazing depth of life experience to share. Be inspiring or be a jerk - your choice

You may find this interesting:

These Women Entrepreneurs Created A Fake Male Cofounder To Dodge Startup Sexism

After setting out to build Witchsy, it didn’t take long for them to notice a pattern: In many cases, the outside developers and graphic designers they enlisted to help often took a condescending tone over email. These collaborators, who were almost always male, were often short, slow to respond, and vaguely disrespectful in correspondence. In response to one request, a developer started an email with the words “Okay, girls…”

That’s when Gazin and Dwyer introduced a third cofounder: Keith Mann, an aptly named fictional character who could communicate with outsiders over email.

“It was like night and day,” says Dwyer. “It would take me days to get a response, but Keith could not only get a response and a status update, but also be asked if he wanted anything else or if there was anything else that Keith needed help with.”

Dwyer and Gazin continued to deploy Keith regularly when interacting with outsiders and found that the change in tone wasn’t just an anomaly. In exchange after exchange, the perceived involvement of a man seemed to have an effect on people’s assumptions about Witchsy and colored how they interacted with the budding business. One developer in particular seemed to show more deference to Keith than he did to Dwyer or Gazin, right down to the basics of human interaction.

“Whenever he spoke to Keith, he always addressed Keith by name,” says Gazin. “Whenever he spoke to us, he never used our names.”

That was a disheartening read. But had the female brought up the reason it took her longer to accomplish what her male counterpart could, she likely would have been seen as making excuses or whiny.

My boss told me three years ago I needed to stand up for myself and be more assertive in my work. When I did, I became “defensive” and “sensitive to criticism.”

I've just received an email at work from another organisation. On his signature between his name and job title it says the following :

Pronouns: he, him, his

Jesus fucking Christ, what next?

I'm not reading 9 pages. Putting pronouns in public profiles is a way to show unity with the Trans community.

If everyone does it, it doesn't stand out as weird when non-binary people do it.

But for true equality, people should include a photo and bio of their pets. Then people with my impairments won't need to remember names and pronouns. People can just be "blind Jack Russell" or "incontinent tabby cat".

That's fine. No one else read the context either. You go ahead and assume like every fucker else.

And everyone should have the choice to do and not do it. Which was the meaning of this thread. Some folks don't want to stand out in their email sig, they just want to get on with their fucking job.

"Ginger Pigeon Murdering Bastard" does sound cool though.

See? My solution works better for all. And we will instantly be able to recognise the cunts that don't like animals.

It could boost animal welfare. Those who cannot have pets but don't wish to be seen as cunts can sponsor zoo or shelter animals, or maybe a dolphin. Billionaires could show off by having their own protected rhino, paying for the armed guards. Cheapskates can name a spider.

Save the world whilst avoiding pronoun gaffes.

Okay I'm in. 👍

This whole thread makes me appreciate my job all the more. Alone in my lab, no contact with customers or suppliers, co-workers who are happy to just leave me to it, and a boss who accepts feeling insulted as a fact of life.

I can get away with forgetting names, genders and basic manners.

Unity with the trans community. what horseshit.

Again, I agree with you totally. My email details contain my name, job title and contact details. Enough. Who I support or am in unity with is unprofessional and irrelevant.

Funny you say that. I was wondering if it was a personal thing or a company thing. Strange for sure.

Same here.

Before people would schedule meetings at a big round tables. Now we do it on magic screens. It is very efficient and allows me to wear my penis pump 24/7.

In this case it's a company thing.

Yeah my name is strange!

It's what happens sometimes when your company likes to project a certain image. I think it's sick. I'm so glad I no longer work for companies who care more about image than people.

"This guy works 15 hours a day. I'll pay him shit wages, but provide his lunch. That way I can tell people we provide catered lunches for our employees. The thousands of dollars we don't pay in wages will go towards flying the Kardashians over for an all expenses paid photo op. Yay! We're so woke!"
