Mr. Han was crying again. The silent tears ran down his face and it broke Maiha's heart that she couldn't do anything to help. Her heart hurt too and she wanted to cry but kept it bottled tight within herself, it would only cause Mr. Han more pain to see her tears at the loss of her MimMim. Trying to help she gently nudged at his hands with her head rubbing her face across the back of his knuckles. Maiha knew better then to react to the push that separated her from the only person left in her life. When she tried again, the back of her throat purring softly Mr. Han sharply told her to get to her bed. She looked up at the older man with big eyes pleading with him not to abandon her to her sadness but he didn't care and he left the room, then the house without so much as a good by pat.
Alone Maiha was allowed to express her loss and rolled herself into a tight ball at the foot of MimMim's favorite chair. Her entire life all Maiha had know were these two people, they were her family and even though a part of her knew she was more MimMim's then Mr. Han's the husband cared for her because of the love his wife had for her. When MimMim died two days ago it seemed that all Maiha did was make Mr. Han cry. He would look at her and she could see the struggle in his face before he broke down and cried. She had tried everything to make it better for him. She greeted him when he came home after working in the store front. She didn't know what they sold but MimMim had told her that they sold treasures that no one else could imagine. She didn't know what that meant but it sounded like hard work and so she had made sure to put her happiest fave on and met Mr. Han when he walked in thru the doors.
It hadn't worked. Neither did crawling into bed with him to curl at his feet, like she used to when MimMim was sick. He would kick out at her and tell her to go to her bed. She was running out of ideas when her last one had failed. MimMim had taught her how to cook and she had spent all day cooking his favorite meal. Maiha was positive that this would make him feel better but when he took a deep breath in and smelled what she had cooked he left the house for hours and came back with a blotchy face and staggering thru the door where he collapsed in his bed and slept till the afternoon of the next day.
She didn't want to be selfish but his every rejection of her efforts were making her loss just that much more. Because now it felt like she had also lost him.
"Maiha." Mr. Han's rough sand papery voice echoed int he quite hallway. It was a few hours after noon and he should have still been at work.
"Mr. Han!" She jumped up from her curled position to run as quick as she could to his side. Maybe this was it, maybe he at least needed her and she would be able to make everything okay. "Mr. Han." She said again purring with happiness as she nudged his hand violently needing the comfort she had been trying to give to him to be shared with her. His hand felt awkward at it patted the top of her head. His movements were cold and lacked the warmth of his wife's long gone touch. Thinking that sliced her deep and she wanted to be weak and double over with that pain as Mr. Han wrapped his arms around her and whispered sweet melodies in her ear till she fell asleep. But he wasn't the type so she took a step back and gave him the space this his stiff movements begged for.
"Maiha." He said again his voice drowning in emotions. "Here. Dress in this quickly." He handed her a box that was on the bench that she hadn't noticed when she had greeted him.
"Yes Mr. Han." Maiha took the box gently in her hands and wondered what was in it. This was the first gift Mr. Han had ever given her and she cherished it without even knowing what was inside. On the balls of her feet she darted to her room and quickly changed out of her clothes and opened the box. For a moment she crouched over it not quite sure what it was. Her tail swishing back and forth as she watched it with large curious eyes. Taking it out of the box it seemed to be a dress of some sort made of frills in the colors of black and creamy ivory. She fumbled with it as she tried to put on. She was rushing and it was being difficult. The dress refused to cover the entirety of her chest or her bottom. Maiha fought with it but ended up submitting to the cloth knotting the long sides into a bow.. In the box was also a frilled collar with a bell and a head band and arm covers. With everything she was still left with a long piece of black material. Not sure what it was for Maiha made another bow and tied it into her hair so that it would hold up her long blond mane.
In the mirror everything looked alright but her legs seemed bare and forgotten and she had just the thing to cover them with. Now it looked better, she approved with the addition of her faded black and white stocking. It was a shame she didn't have shoes that matched but was also glad about it. She hated shoes and only ever wore them when Mr. Han said she needed to. Which wasn't every often because she had never left the property before and had only met a few of Mr. Han's and MimMim's friends.
"I am ready." Maiha announced as she bounced out of the room excited to show Mr. Han her new outfit. She noticed that his eyes went straight to her addition and she fidgeted until he said that she looked fine. Maiha left go of the breath she hadn't been aware that she was holding and followed Mr. Han because he had told her to. Until she reached the large fence that separated the house property from the store property. MimMim had always told her to stay away from this fence and while it haunted her to know what was on the other side she obeyed because of her love for the old woman. "Mr. Han." Her voice shook as she stared up at the fence glued to her spot a few feet from the gate. "I can't." She didn't know why but there was a feeling of dread at what could loom beyond the gate.
"It will be okay. I promise. I will let nothing hurt you." His voice turned gentle and soft as he held his hand out to the young neko. Maiha still had a bad feeling about this but took his hand nevertheless and walked with him as she crossed the barrier of her world and the world out there.
After the gate closed they crossed a lawn of green-green grass and entered a large double story building from it's back door. The building looked sane enough but the moment Maiha walked in she gasped. The smell was otherworldly and swirled around her like noted in a song. Each one different, each one more demanding then the last. She wasn't sure what these smells were but she had a feeling that they belonged to a person versus a thing. Yet in all the new smells she didn't recognize any as smelling like her.
Mr. Han lead her thru the back of the store that was organized and packed in some place up to the ceiling. She saw boxes of toys, some of food, others of clothing with accessories but most of them she couldn't place and had had no idea of their purpose. When the last doors were opened she found herself in a large room with cages and displays of different animals. There was a dog she pointed out to herself. Birds. Fish, oh fish. She watched the fish dart around in their tanks and her eyes sparkled with the chance to claw at them.
"Maiha." Mr. Han's voice broke her daze on the fish. "This will be your spot. You will not leave this area unless you ask me and I approve it. Do you understand?"
Mr. Han pointed to a large bumped out window seat and nodded her head. It showed the busy side of the store and she would be able to watch the world she had wondered about for the last 18 years. "Yes Mr. Han." She nodded pouncing onto the pillowed beach seat with ease. "What is this place?" She asked once she situated herself in a crossed legged manor.
"It's a companion store." Mr. Han informed.
Maiha nodded as if she knew what he meant by that and continued to look around the store. It was then that she noticed the humans on the other side of the store. There were three young girls her age and two boys. They were dressed and talked among themselves and it seemed that they too had an area which they had to stay in. Maiha waved when one of the girls with fire red hair looked at her. She saw shock and surprise on the other girl's face that soon turned to hate. Maiha didn't understand the reason behind it but when the girl pointed her out to the other humans they all soon wore the look of hate as they glared at her.
Uncomfortable with the open hostile stares she looked away from the and out the window where it would be less likely that there would be mean looks from people she didn't know. Maiha tried to stay happy about finally knowing what was on the other side of the fence but even though she saw more people and there were creatures of every sort behind her she had never felt so alone.
