Movie recommendations?

Uwe Boll could fuck up a free blow job. Never ever underestimate his ability to make something suck.

No no. Uwe Boll can kill many things, but Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan is impossible to fuck up. In brightest day, in blackest night, dammit let me believe in this.

No, but it's a Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Uwe Boll himself couldn't make it suck.

Serious suggestions? If you're in any way interested in our football, The Damned United stars Michael Sheen and got a good review from my football-hating friend. If you liked Little Miss Sunshine, I'd also recommend Sunshine Cleaning, which got nearly no publicity here despite being really quite good. Very good, in fact. And, as mentioned, Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes.

I went into Sunshine Cleaning really wanting to like it and at the end was unsatisfied.

You sound like you're a little sweet on this Ryan Reynolds cat.

Lemme help out. He's even in shackles. I figured what with you being dominant should probably make the photo that much better.

The only cool thing Uwe Boll ever did was to invite his internet critics to box against him in an actual ring. But true to Uwe "I suck rabid badger balls" Boll, he made bloody sure to not include any critics that were actually even remotely dangerous. Thus he took a possible epic winfest, and made it suck. The only redeeming factor was the video of Lowtax getting clobbered.

I just saw a promo for something called Law Abiding Citizen. Stars Gerard Butler as some kind of super spy out to avenge the deaths of his family when the system fails to deliver justice. Many, many explosions ensue. Out Oct 16.

I've seen the trailer for the Where the Wild Things Are live action movie several times, and I'm hopeful. It was directed by Spike Jonez and looks great.

The Invention of Lying looks pretty good, too, in a dry humour kind of way. From Rotten Tomatoes:

From Ricky Gervais, the award-winning creator and star of the original BBC series "The Office" and HBO's "Extras," comes the new romantic comedy "The Invention of Lying."

"The Invention of Lying" takes place in an alternate reality in which lying--even the concept of a lie--does not exist. Everyone--from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street--speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark (Gervais) suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

LOOKS SO GOOD. Every time I watch a trailer or see some poster or whatever for this film I go a little rabid because it looks SO MOFUCKIN GOOD. I mean. Really. When I first heard that a film was being made of Where The Wild Things Are, I was devastated because it was one of my favorite books as a kid and I was afraid it was going to be turned into some Disney-ish, computer animation, Horton Hears A Who-like film, full of celebrity voices and that it would be just terrible. Luckily, its nothing like that, and it looks like a great film. I've been waiting for it on the edge of my seat with high hopes since I first saw the first set photo months ago.

Would love to help out, K, but I think the last action film I saw in the theater was Return of the Jedi.

I give The Wrestler a serious thumbs-up, though.

I am very very nervous about Fantastic Mr. Fox for this reason. It seems promising. I'd pick the same director. It was my absolute favorite book as a kid.

However they have de-Britishized it and I think it's gonna be a running fart joke rather than the kind of dark and intense little book I loved.

If that is the movie I'm thinking of, I thought it looked really, really good and still want to see it. Mickey Rourke film, right?

OMG! I'm totally adding Blade 3 to the 'bad movie list'! Thanks for reminding me!

I had to look this guy up on imdb. I have never heard of him of any of this movies. Looks like a lot of 'straight to dvd' shit too me. Hell, even I have standards. And, that's saying something.

Yep, that's the one. I haven't seen it yet, but it's supposed to be excellent!

i hope it's good, cause the kids are determined to go see it, which means i'll be seeing it. i got them the book, cause i used to love it, and my wild thing (otherwise known as my son) adores that book.

The Wrestler was really excellent. So was Return Of The Jedi.

I actually think that the Fantastic Mr. Fox movie looks pretty decent. I mean, who knows, it could end up being dumbed down and disappointing (it does use celebrity voices, which is often a bad sign), but even if it does turn out to not be a very good film, at least it will look good. I'm digging the animation style a lot.

But I did really like the new Harry Potter film. I thought that it was the first film in the HP series that was good on its own, not just compared to the other films.

Did you? Really? I felt that so much had be cut out that the plot was essentially incoherent - if I hadn't known the book I would not have understood what was going on at all. Mind you, there's usually too much in any novel to make a single feature-length film - a feature is roughly the narrative equivalent of a short story.

I thought that they edited it down in a really smart way, and lots of people who hadn't read any of the books (but who had seen all of the movies) were able to follow it no problem. It really was edited in such a way that knowledge of the books was unnecessary, however if this is the first film you've seen in the franchise, you'll be lost. I think that it was smart of them to do it that way, and that it worked. Everyone who's read the books will know whats going on in the film as well as all of the smaller plot points and subtext that the movie lacks, and everyone who has seen the other movies will know whats going on as far as the film franchise is concerned (scope-wise), and everybody else is such a small minority (and probably won't see the newest film anyway) that who cares if they know whats going on or not?

And I don't like to compare films that are adapted from books to the source material too much. Its completely different mediums and need to be approached that way.

I like explosions and Ricky Gervais. Both good! Thanks. Actually, there is a scene in an episode of Extras that gave me one of the best "laugh until you can't breathe" moments in years.

I've heard good things about The Wrestler, from folks who've seen it. It's on the shelf here but I know it's a horribly pirated copy and I refuse to pay $7 for it. It's on my "to watch" list, though.

What, you ignore Jedi? Methinks the force is not strong with this one. ;)

Puh-lease! You're talking to the girl who owned a glow-in-the-dark light saber as a kid.

I saw Return of the Jedi at a theater in New Westminster with my friends, Dave, Dave, Trina and Joyce.

Romantic Comedy usually makes me break out in a rash on hearing the phrase, but Gervais plugging the movie on Daily made me actually consider going to it.

I just thought of another movie with lots of explosions. The Hurt Locker is about an Army bomb unit in Iraq. Many very cool explosions, but really I think this was a character study set in a war zone. It's not a "war movie" at all. It's probably coming out on DVD soon.

I liked his last movie a lot so I'm interested in this one. The trailer looked good to me.

Then I'll give you a pass and assume that you were gently avoiding the obvious age joke. Of course, all bets are off if it turns out that you are my long-ago separated sister (much younger and much prettier, of course).

Third. I went into it not knowing anything bar the basic plot and that Jeremy Renner was in it, and I was astonished at how good it was.

Gosh, I hope I'm not your sister! That night? With the sheep and the Brillo pads? Can you imagine how disgusting that would be if we were related??

Cool, another one to add to the list. Man, I am going to have to ship out a lot of mangoes this month.

So, get this. Last night, by accident, (long story), I rent "In the Name of the King", (saw Jason Statham on the cover and my mind went blank from that point on). After making through that piece of goza and not seeing my man J sans shirt even once, I woke up and noticed the director.

Uwe Boll

Now I know.
