I wasn't saying Sandman was homophobic, either, merely making a comment on the trend toward not irritating the straight male readers. It fit this character, perhaps, because that was the way Sandman made the character. But that doesn't change the way this subject is treated in just about every straight story that mentions cocksucking.
It isn't that a writer would be out to shock the populace, or create a subversive work. It's proper characterization. Abashed-Dreamer also mentions the lack of detail that segment contains. It's like Sandman knew the idea of punishing him this way was a good idea, but he just didn't have the courage or perhaps the time to complete the scene. And the character rides the fence too much, I think, to make the punishment aspect interesting. He doesn't find it replusive, and doesn't really want to do it. Shrugging, in a sense, and doing it without any real reaction. Maybe the real problem is that the reaction is lackadaisical. It doesn't contain much substance, either way.
Nope, I haven't read Sandman's other stories. I'll get to them sooner or later
but I don't have the time to read that much and still continue writing on my own stuff. That's why I like this circle. It gives me a wide variety of things to read, but doesn't overwhelm me timewise.
Sandman -- like I said, I did like the story. It has the beginnings of real writing contained in it. We're just picking it apart here 'cause that's what we do
