I have a little French bulldog, and he is all stopped up. Does anyone know what I can give him, aside from an enema? I'm serious, this isn't some sort of wierd fantasy or anything, in case that crossed your mind.

I really don't want to take him to the vet over something this minor. He just looks so pathetic out there trying!

how long has he been having this problem?
Just a yesterday and this morning. That is why I was hesitant to rush off to the vet. :nana:

No, but he goes out and tries. It seems like he has to go he just can't.

No, he went night before last. Then when I put him out all day yesterday and so far today (it's noon here) he has tried but not gone. I watch him so he doesnt run off so I am sure.

I would vote for a good vet, especially if he shows any symptoms of bloating or rapid heartbeat (actually more of a concern in large breeds than in the little guys.) If you want to (briefly) try to do-it-yourself, perhaps some of this info may help. Pumpkin sounds like a put-on, but I know a woman who swears by it for her show-grade pugs.

Cat & Dog Constipation Remedy and Treatment Health Products
It's important to buy the right cat and dog constipation products for your pet's specific needs. Discuss your pet's requirements thoroughly with your Veterinarian before you decide together which meds to buy. Buying pet medicines online is not meant to be a replacement for visiting your local veterinarian.

Laxatone
A long-time popular cat and dog constipation remedy, treatment and laxative. It's palatable and easy to administer too. In cats, it helps remove blockage from hairballs.
Lactulose Solution Syrup
A prescripton liquid sometimes prescribed as a laxative. It increases the amount of water retained by the fecal material, allowing for softer bowel movements.

Constipation in Dog - Home Remedy Idea

Looking for a natural alternative to your dog constipation. How about this constipation dog home remedy idea. We've been told by our vet that canned pumpkin often works well (that's "pure" canned pumkin, not the spiced Pumkin Pie Filling Mix). We also found a few people on the internet who recommended it too. Pumpkin is high in fiber and has a high water content, both of which helps to keep dogs regular.

Dogs apparently love the taste of it too and it doesn't take much to work. However, we found that advice regarding the amount given varied somewhat across the internet. One site we found recommended about 1 to 2 tsp. a day for dogs uner 15 lbs, 1 to 2 tbs. per day for dogs between 15 and 35 pounds and 2 to 5 tbs. per day for larger dogs. Since too much could make the problem worse, it's best to start with smaller amounts, see how that goes and then increase this dog constipation home remedy accordingly.
As always, we advise visiting with your veterinarian regarding any remedy as to it's effect on your specific pet before treatment. They'll probably have the best idea on the proper dosage for your dog too.

Ok, tape worm and canned pumpkin, got it. We are going to the vet. Thanks!

Could also be comething like collic(sp?). Babies get it alot and it's just uncomfortable. If a horse gets it though, it could kill them. Not trying to sound alarmist here, but leading up to a question: How serious is constipation for a dog? i know this is different for other animals.

I agree, CALL your vet first and see if it's something that needs immediate attention. Save you an unneeded trip or alert you if one is needed.

BTW< I hate to sound crass but all I can think of right now is that cell phone commercial where the bull dog swallowed the phone and the nurse says "Sounds like he's on hold, and it's peak hours!" :D

We have an appointment for 4:15. The assistant said he probably just ate something that he shouldnt have, like a crayon. I have a two yr. old so this is plausible. Anyway they are just going to check him out, thanks for all the feedback! :nana:

Ah yes, there's nothing like rainbow dog poop.
You know, I once heard a joke about kids feeding their dog a bag of rubber bands so it was easier to pick up the yard. ;)

We had a farm dog a few years ago which used to get constipated often, the result of a broken pelvis when she was a puppy. We used daily doses of coloxyl senna pills to try to keep her regular, and had to make sure she never got pregnant because she'd never be able to give birth naturally. This dog eventually had to be put down because she'd still keep getting bunged up despite everything we did for her. She was getting old and it wasn't fair to put her through the painful "unblocking" process of having to stay at the vet's for a few days for manual evacuation *ick*

Before anyone asks why we didn't get her de-sexed - she was a working dog and the trend after spaying is usually a fat lazy mutt. We watched her carefully every time she came in heat and she never ever got in pup.

Roast beef and large amounts of sweet potatoes cause my dog to have diarrhea.. might be worth a shot
