Manric was nobody special in the Alarian army. A lowly foot soldier with little more going for him than Alarian pride. He was strong and knew how to use his sword well. He fought hard in the war against the Barbarians and brought many foes down with his blade.
One day his squad heard that the Princess of their mighty kingdom was visiting some of the wartorn towns to give the people hope that Alaria will prosper and thrive in spite of war. Manric's squad was three miles outside of a small village called Telar when they saw the smoke rising from the village proper.
The captains ordered the squad to move in and save anyone they could. From a mile away the screams of women and children could be heard. Manric felt his chest panic in the thought of innocent people being hurt. Not that he cared all that much about people. But he knew that if he didn't get there quickly he would have no one to kill for the enemy would escape.
They split up in the village searching for people. Manric passed an overturned carage and heard a woman protest as he passed a crumbled general shop. With a pause he peeked through the broken doorway.
His eyes widened and he held his breath as he saw the Princess, crawling backwards away from a Barbarian with a battle-axe. Manric couldn't believe his luck. Surely in saving her he would be given riches and rewards for all time. The King would be thrilled and perhaps Manric could get a position in the palace where it would be easy living forever.
Manric moved behind the barbarian and slipped his blade into the man's lungs, preventing him from screaming as he died. Manric stood over the body for a while and stared at the Princess, he had never seen her before in person and was struck by her beauty.
