I may trade it in and add a couple of hundred and get something
that I can at least download any of the Microsoft updates with out the Bastard locking up.

Yes, I contacted Compact and they said NOT to download any of the updates!

AS far as i'm concerned they can take their Presario S4000V computer and shove it up there ass sideways...still plugged in.

Who in there right mind would turn out a computer with any operating system on it that you couldn't update?

Critical updates and window xp?

Ouch that sucks.. compaq doesnt necessarily have much of a good rep when it comes to desktops.

Compaq's, Suck the big one they always have!

Go for a Dell, excellent service when needed, and free upgrades too!

I'm looking at a SystemMax. It has a P4 2.4 GHz. processor, 80Gig hard-drive, win-xp pro. and a whole bunch of of other stuff.

Cool so long as their Service warrenties are excellent, and Customer Service reps know what they are talking about you should be fine, But, ;) are then waterproof, since I see you like it wet!

This is why you should get a Mac :D

Besides running well, they're purdy too! :D A bit more quality but I've never known a person who owned a mac who's complained about it.

I've been hooked on Mac forever & a day. I honestly can't see ANY reason to go PC. Relaibility & simplicity of use won me over a long time ago.

I can only think of two reasons, one percieved and one for real. The percieved reality is that Windows is so much easier to use than any other OS. After playing with Win XP, OSX, and now even Linux, they all have their own learning curve but after then none are much more difficult (okay, Linux quite a bit more but it's still not that hard) than the rest. The major reason to use Windows? PC gamers. It's the only good reason I can come up with. Some games eventually make it to Mac and fewer to Linux but Windows is really the spot for that. Especially if you're into any kind of editing, (video, audio, photo) Mac is definately the choice to go for.

i love my toshiba satellite .. but my desktop i built myself .. i hated my compaq's when i had them back in the day

Fortunately I think I've outgrown my need for computer games. Don't get me wrong... I'm not knocking the people that enjoy them but heck if I'm gonna spend that kinda cash to play games!

I don't mind my Mac enthusiasm being in its own little niche but if reliability & simplicity of use are a niche, let me stay there!

I can relate. My wife and I have been fighting our fucking Compaq since day one. We had it for two or so years now, just a couple weeks ago it did a total meltdown, lost EVERYTHING!!! However since then its been running alright, now it just locks up, bogs down, doesn't accept new hardware, or run programs correctly.

When we get some extra cash we are planning on Dell or Gateway, possibly a Mac, not too sure though, I never worked with a Mac, but everyone who has loves them.

What ever we get its not going to be something that is sold at Wal-Mart because any product that is sold at Wal-Mart SUCKS, even if you don't buy it there.

The problem that you have there is really simple you bought a compaq. I remember my inlaws bought one from Radio Shack some years ago and it was my first experience with one. It was a pIII 550 or something like that and I had a 486dx at home that ran circles around it.. I was absolutly dumbfounded how someone could build a computer with that much power(at the time) that was so slow and useless. Specifically I rememeber this, they had Cable internet and you would have swore that it was dialup with how slow it was and they didnt even have to to bog it down with cheap crappy software yet this was in the first 2 weeks I was playin with it..

I have YET to meet a compaq that Ive used and been not even impressed but satisfactorily satisfied with how it operated..

they suck and I wouldnt wish one on my worst enemy (which might just be compaq) ( and because then compaq gets the $$ and advertises more and more uninformed people buy them) ARGH

Because they amount of critisism Mac's get people who own them feel obligated to defend their integrity I beleive.. For anything graphics tho they cant be beat.. :p

:) As a matter of fact I don't know anything thats made to be wet that being wetter wouldn't maker better!

Now as to this SystemMax if nothing else the insides are not integrated into one main piece.

I'm on my 3-1/2 year old Gateway right now. Sure I've had some problems along the way, however 99% of the time Gateway either sent me new parts free under warranty or it was something I did. I have tech support till 2025.

As I informed my wife I am keeping it because it is a damn good computer and does anything I want to do.

I got my Compaq Presario laptop a few years ago, and have regretted it ever since...if you want a nice looking paperweight, it's great for that, but if you want a reliable computer that is user friendly, go with someone else. The computer support and customer service people at Compaq are the most unhelpful people on the planet, unless your problem is that you forgot to plug the computer in...

I'd recommend a Dell or a Mac. Dell has excellent customer service, and a Mac is much more user friendly, and with OS X, has far fewer system crashes than PCs do...

Good luck!

Avoid em all!

Stay away from Compaq, Dell, Gateway and all those other silly companies and build yer on computer. *grins* It's cheaper, much more customizable, and satisfying.

I didn't know I had to defend my choice of computer purchases. What criticism? Other than its market share, I have yet to see any reason to either qualify my choice of computers. I made my choice based upon having used BOTH systems.

There isn't much my Mac can't do and especially in graphics, PCs don't stand a chance.

Just because everyone drives Chevy & I choose to drive a Pontiac doesn't require me to defend my integrity. Can't Mac people or people in general make choices without this generalization that we HAVE to defend our choices? I make my choices based upon the best available knowledge I had- Mac simplicity over a complicated PC language.

Man it seems like these computer companies like Compaq and HP have exclusive versions of MS Windows. I hear ya on the computer. Darn the machine. I'd suggest an AMD or Dell. That's my contribution. Have to finish this post before I get caught using a Mac red-handed. :D

What a grand scam Microsoft has got going! More updates than Liz Taylor & Mickey Rooney have had spouses! What's the usual time frame between upgrades nowadays??

It's almost like crack cocaine... first one's free but once you're hooked in, you'll be paying & paying & paying...

I will weigh in on this one. I am on a compaq, and whoever said it is the exclusive that they have with microsoft is right.

The best thing that you can do, is this. Completely wipe the harddrive, reformat, and then reinstall the OS. But don't use the crash or reinstall discs that you got from Compaq.

Go and buy the OS that you want, and for goodness sake, do not get ME...The OS from hell. At least the way that Compaq has it installed and the way that the exclusive version runs.

:D Oh, no. OS wars. I used to be rather happy to bash mac users , still do on occasion but its usually because of the users themselves who can be the most rapid hard core I've ever seen and not the OS/hardware but its really silly to argue most of the time. Different strokes/different folks etc.. I do rather annoyed with linux lovers who constantly bash windows (uhh, have you ever tried to update video drivers in linux? good luck if you aren't a sys admin/IT type and unix/linux guru).

I wouldn't make fun of microshaft's upgrade schemes LE ;).. Apple is going that way with OS X 1.4 or whatever being a $100 upgrade a mere year or so later. We're all screwed when they go to a subscription only type deal. I can easily see MS and others charging $100 a year for an OS + updates. That and all the digital rights management has me sitting down and learning all those linux commands eventually.

i've always had compaqs and have never had any problem with either of them. i found them to be pretty reliable. and i dont know what kind of compaq youre using, but i've always had free system updates, and they've always been upgradable as far as operating systems. matter of fact, i just loaded XP over the weekend to my computer as well as my sisters.

on a different note....i lived in college dorms for a few years and i never heard anyone say they were happy with their dells. my roomate had one and it frequently crashed and need to be restarted. It ended up totally dying on him only three months into the school year. He also could never get any service when he needed it. after much swearing and a commitment to never purchase a dell again, i also concluded that i wouldnt waste my time with them.

Alienware seems to be a pretty popular and reliable computer brand. my brother has been using one for years and hasnt had one problem. check out alienware.com
