My new compaq computer Blows!

I will weigh in on this one. I am on a compaq, and whoever said it is the exclusive that they have with microsoft is right.

The best thing that you can do, is this. Completely wipe the harddrive, reformat, and then reinstall the OS. But don't use the crash or reinstall discs that you got from Compaq.

Go and buy the OS that you want, and for goodness sake, do not get ME...The OS from hell. At least the way that Compaq has it installed and the way that the exclusive version runs.

I had a old dell that i got for helping her out and a friend put me on it and i liked it my computer died now my brother is fixing up a computer got for free all it neede was a hard drive i have 5 hds so i took them over and said which one.

This is why you should get a Mac :D

Much more flexible, much stabler OS, vewer virus problems, prettier to look at, too bad there is less software, higher upgrade prices and way less extras you can get, almost like only one company owns them or something

heheh

If you want balls to the walls power go for an Alienware

With a little less levity, I used to provide service work for compaq, dell, ibm, gateway and toshiba laptops. In reality I performed a lot more operating system related work on compaq than almost any other brand. They use many of their own drivers instead of system standard ones and so have lots of issues, especially with updates. Microsoft does put out a lot of updates, but mostly they are security fixes where someone has fingured out a new way to hack their systems. Macs are great if you like a simpler to use operating system, they do an exceptional job for graphics editing but the amount of softare is fairly limited. I personally own 4 IBM Netvista desktops, an IBM laptop, an HP laptop, a Toshiba handheld and a Dell server, I like IBM very well, but it is pricey I agree with the avoid ME at all costs statements, it is horrible. I personally like XP Pro myself, although the home edition is not too bad. They both work well with games and even though it is less easily pirated so you can't go and just borrow it from you buddy it is very low cost if you are a college student (or know one who will go and get it for you). Dell has one of the best service plans on the market and they do a really nice job of taking care of you, just be sure you have a good idea of what you want to do with your computer before you buy it. If you want to play games, make sure you emphasize your video card, if you want to use it for downloading tons of music, get a bigger hard drive. Just make sure you bend what you get toward what you are most likely to do. Good luck and ummm dump the Compaq like a psychhotic date.

There may be a patch

There may be a service patch for the Compaq so that you can download the MS Service pack.

Look on the HP/Compaq site and see if it is available.

HP had one ready soon after Microsoft came out with service Pack 1. If you downloaded the service pack without the HP patch then the ststem recovery might not work. But once downloaded everything is fine.

also...is this a how to question?

:D Yes! It's a how not to not fuck up your bank account by buying a computer that doesn't fucking download the needed updates!:D

Well, Folks I am here tonight for a few seconds on the NEW Systemax Venture.

So far so good!

This mothers got so much restore and backup stuff on it i'm trying to decide if i want to load up my GoBback or not.

Anybody know anything about Tech-In-A-Box?

Is it worth a Damn?

Then its on to microsoft to download updates!

compaq must be klingon for crap

i had a compaq all through college and it crashed 3 times in 4 years, the bastard. he required 2 new hard drives.

everything was fine between us until about a year and a half into our relationship...then something just went horribly wrong.

he froze all the time, wouldn't talk to me, became incredibly lethargic. after a while, our only forms of communication were his emotional manipulation and my combination of verbal and physical abuse. he was turning me into an animal.

then for graduation, my parents got me a present to help me through grad school...

you guessed it - a compaq laptop.
and she's a complete bitch.

not only is she tempermental and constantly freezing up, the cd drawer is being held closed by rubber bands.

i don't know what i'm getting next (not that i can afford a new computer right now anyway) but it definitely won't be a compaq...

I went and checked out what alienware has. While they have some very nice systems, they have some very nice prices as well. So no one get weird from sticker shock when you look at them.

Way out of my budget for this poor college student. lol.

Yeah, Alienware makes nice stuff but their prices are a bit much. I'd only get their laptops if you really had to have an ultra fast gaming laptop.

Computer update.

Microsoft updates all but finished. Computer still working!

No screwing up...yet.

I still have to find out if those little programs that make life on the net so much eaiser works on XP pro.

05-04-2007....update.

SysteMax computer still going strong!

Tech in a box bit the dust.

When I added a 250 Gig hardrive it no longer lets me load GoBack.

Haven't Had to replace anything yet. :)

I may trade it in and add a couple of hundred and get something
that I can at least download any of the Microsoft updates with out the Bastard locking up.

Yes, I contacted Compact and they said NOT to download any of the updates!

AS far as i'm concerned they can take their Presario S4000V computer and shove it up there ass sideways...still plugged in.

Who in there right mind would turn out a computer with any operating system on it that you couldn't update?

Critical updates and window xp?

I feel for you. Compaq makes a good laptop but their desktops are at the bottom of the pile with E machines.
They do make pretty good servers tho.
But Dell btw (in my humble and experienced opinion) is not really any better.

This is essentially why only non-knowing people buys computer from a large computer company. Unless it's a laptop, you should ALWAYS try to find someone who can build your computer, or at least find a good shop where you could custom buy parts. Even thought it might be slightly more expensive if you go to an non-internet computer shop, it would still be cheaper than buying the same thing from a large computer company. And what's best, you get quality stuff - no more useless power supplies (they're usually worthless), no more useless fans which produces nothing more than loud noise, no more super-slow hard drives, no more custom windows filled with adware and spyware and so on.

Remember, if you buy your computer from Dell or Compaq, really, all you are doing is paying them money for them to buy parts cheap from the manufactors and sell it extremely expensive for you.

the problem is compaq's special littler version of windows they install with their resource disk. HP did the same thing, and now they are a merged company.

I call them HPaq.

and they suck.

Dell is the only laptop I'd buy anymore.
