Derrick had always been the type of guy who tried to avoid drama at all costs. Even though he had been against religion for several years now, and that had certainly upset members of his family and friends, for the most part he was an average guy. He was a personal trainer at a local gym club. He liked to drink on the weekends. He enjoyed going to concerts and movies. And he loved the ladies. From an outside perspective one wouldn’t think there was anything controversial about him, and when people found out that he didn’t believe in God, The Devil, Heaven, Hell, Angels, or Demons they were often distraught or angry.
This of course annoyed him. “Why was it such a big deal?” he thought to himself. His beliefs didn’t affect anyone else. But people always made such an ordeal out of it that he rarely, if ever, brought it up. The irony was that he did believe in ghosts or spirits. One person who was bound to find out about his outlook on the universe was his new girlfriend. They’d been dating for a couple of months now, and late one night they finally stumbled onto the subject while lying on his sofa in his apartment. He had his arms around her and was holding her against his chest. Derrick gently ran his fingers through her hair while watching the television. After a moment he whispered back to her, “I’ve been atheist for a while now… I just haven’t seen anything that makes me believe in a god.” His eyes were heavy now as he was slightly tired…
