Until I have some time to hit a used book store, I only have corny, bad, and all around goofy scifi books left. Blind Justice has my bookmark captive right now.

I am currently reading The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon- which is a historical, romance, time travel book. Kind of corny, but I'm a girl, so I'm allowed!

As for movies- I just saw Lady in the Water. I live in Japan right now, so it just came out in the theater! Have you seen it?

I'm between books right now, but the last book I read all the way through was Flight of the Intruder, by Stephen Coonts. Basically it's a historical war novel about a Navy bomber pilot in Vietnam, based to varying degrees on actual stuff that happened when Stephen Coonts was a Naval Aviator.

Another series I'm attatched to at the moment involve Honor Harrington (what one of my friends describes as "hard comic book sci-fi"). It's basically a sci-fi series based loosely on the Napoleanic Wars, with fleets of starships firing broadsides of high-powered beam weapons and thermonuclear missiles at eachother. The books cover a pretty long period of time, so you get to see technology advance and mature. Very good books, with lots of characters of varying importance running around (a guy in one book who is more or less a redshirt that avoided being killed may turn up again later doing something more important.) Also lots of politicking and such.

I'm also enjoying the Vatta's War series by Elizabeth Moon (thus far this includes Trading In Danger, Marque and Reprisal, and Engaging the Enemy). The books start off being about a girl who is kicked out of her planet's military academy just short of graduating, and ends up captaining a freighter in her family's shipping cartel. This is different from other books because she's not out for fame and glory, but rather trade and profit. As the books progress, her family gets caught in an interstellar pirate conspiracy, and in the last book, she has formed herself a tidy little squadron of armed freighters to go fight the pirates with. Some space combat, lots of neat stuff about interstellar trade, a fair degree of politicking, and some person-to-person combat as well.

The last one you described sounds especially interesting to me. I love a good heroine, and it sounds like she may be one!

I am getting ready to read a new Terry Pratchett that I got. Well, I don't think it's actually new, but it's new to me! I don't know if that's SciFi... is it? Hmm

Well, both Honor Harrington (based on Horatio Hornblower, actually) and the Vatta's War books feature a strong heroine (in fact, the Harrington books feature many strong female characters, ranging from military officers to politicians to revolutionaries). That said, Kylara Vatta is a bit less annoying than Honor Harrington can be.

Honor has recurring self-esteem problems, despite being faster, stronger, a better pilot, etc. than many other characters. Even loosing an eye and an arm in various situations only serves to make her stronger, cause she gets a bionic super-eye and a cybernetic arm with a built in rapid-fire dart gun in exchange. That said, she's still a rather cool character, especially once she matures as the series progresses.

Kylarra Vatta has some similarities to Honor Harrington, in that she's a strong, very competent female, skilled at close quarters combat, and is very good at killing people when she needs to (though Vatta is a bit darker than Honor in that, much to her horror and disgust, she finds she enjoys it, while Honor just kills the person and moves on). That said, she still acts like a 22 year old girl, so she finds herself in situations where she doesn't know what's going on and relies on more experienced people, and on occasion is just fishing for compliments to boost her self esteem.

Both are very good books, though I think Vatta's War is a bit easier to get into if you don't like sections detailing velocities and distances, or in-depth discussions of how technology works (the Vatta's War books have a lot of Black Box tech, in that we never are told HOW it works, we're just to accept that it (usually) does.)

Oh, and another thought: If you like strong female characters, check out a sci-fi show from the 90's called "Babylon 5". Between Commander Susan Ivonova, Ambassador Delenn Mir, and "Phoenix Saga" Lyta Alexander, there's plenty of strong females running around.

Thanks again for all the info on the books! I will definitely give them a try. As to Babylon 5 - actually, where I am living they are currently being rebroadcast from number 1. Although I thought the first season was kind of goofy. Furthermore, to illustrate just how much of a geek I am- I saw Jerry Doyle and Bruce Boxleitner at a convention I went to Jerry Doyle acutally does stand up comedy... he had a rather funny bit about how feminine hygeine products should be scented to appeal to men instead of like flowers. ie barbecue, beer, new car smell etc...

Babylon 5 is pretty cheesy in the first season, but it picks up quite a bit in the second season and hits it's stride towards the end of Season 2 and into Season 3.

It is but everythign in it is a set up for the seasons to come. That was what always amazed me about the show, the fact that they had the entire thing sketched out ahead of time. Five years worth of story line and twisting plots already to go. No showsdo that anymore, they can hardly keep continity from one episode to the next let alone the complexity of what B5 did.
