easy. Think of almost as a Virus. A slow, progressing Virus. Kind of like using the Virus from that horrific movie, Outbreak, and combining 28 days/ weeks together. But instead of turning insta-zombie, they die a horrific death, and are risen because the electrodes in one's body are trapped, because the human body cannot secrete itself ( ie/ all holes are clogged by a sticky fluid- hence leaving all fluids inside ones self). Ta-da, instant Zombie.

As an alternative to the 28 Days Later style Zombies, you could go for something like the Reavers, but slightly more contagious. Same wild agression, but throw in all around savagery and ability to handle weapons and space vessels.
