New Poetry Recommendations

December 4, 2004

There are eleven new poems today. Two of them have potential, in my opinion.

Redemption is a first poetry submission from Westlander. It's a comparison of two lovers and their need (each of them, I suppose) for redemption. The point of view switches from line to line between the man and the woman, which is an interesting device, but the structuring of the poem (not enough white space) makes it hard to read. And overall the poem could be cut back, maybe by half. There's engaging language though and some very interesting, effective images. To me, it's very much a first draft piece of writing that has potential to be much stronger.

Then there's Fire, also a first poetry submission by missfire. This is a poem with many errors and rhythmic missteps and a lack of "poeticness" in many ways. And yet there's a story there that's startling and the facts of it so terrible, really, that it grabs you and holds on. Some arresting images, too. It goes on way, way too long because of the meandering writing and lack of focus. But it could be a contender for sure. It could be edited into something really powerful.

There's just nothing out there today that's really graceful or well-written, imo. What's that old saying? Some days you eat the bear, some days the bear eats you. I think the bear chewed on the poems today. :D

Of course that's just one opinion, and there are nine other poems posted. You won't know if you agree with me or not unless you read. And if you do, you might as well vote and comment. ;)

There are literally thousands of views and no submissions yet for The December Contest. I can only assume that poets (many, many poets lol) are thinking about the contest, and submissions will start coming in soon. I hope. You actually win something with this one folks, so get those poems together!

Anybody wanna come help dig me (and my boyfriend) out of the winter wonderland we're in? You'll need a sled (and maybe reindeer) or an ATV to get to us. Oy.

Peace,
Angeline

Wednesday's Review

Started out with eleven and now it's up to 19 new poems — 8 illustrated pieces added. So let me get started before more get dumped on me.

After getting spoilt with illustrated poems by the likes of Lauren Hynde or neonurotic, I find few that really appeal {though there are quite a few good illustrated pieces in the Ekphrastic Poetry thread}. Of the 8 up today, none have, imo, strong enough images to grab anyone's attention. However, there are two by MagicaPractica that you may want to look at for the poetry portion. Try out Small Shell, a bit softly romantic and wistful and A Fall Sunday at Home, a rather pleasing look at a quiet chilly day in a warm home. Makes me want to get a cup of hot chocolate.

Now, for the other poems.

bednhead13 surprised me with The Pirate. It's not what it first appears to be, but I'll let you discover the truth by reading it yourself. As I read it, I saw a couple small typos but they don't really distract that much and I enjoyed rereading the poem once I'd discovered its real meaning. You want a hint? Dream on.

wildsweetone has a good one in 11/07 Beyond Coping. With the enjambment of that first line, it grabs you and that is part of being a successful writer and poet:
There is loneliness at night. Death
It's not warm and comforting but with the success of that first line, it strikes me as a compelling read.

Vox_ also surprised me today. Just when I thought I was almost done for the day, she springs Unrequited on me. This one also has a twist at the end and you'll probably reread this one as well once you see its full meaning.

That's it for today. Of the 19, five caught my eye, especially those last three. If you want, you can check out the other New Poems. Just remember the mantra to read, vote, comment ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry.

Thursday

I've read all the new poems and there are quite a few that are good. I only have time to mention the best of the group.

boycott by ElmerGlew is five lines long and witty. Worth a read!

Stroke by mojo_cat
I started reading this poem, assuming it was another Christmas poem, another Christmas memory but found out that it is a bit more.

excerpt:
and we sing to our little tree and to ourselves, silent night
quiet night the snow is
never stopping always falling never stopping like little bombs
the Christmas Bombing they called it but it was on the 28th
that makes it fine, silent night
holy night

An Invitation into My Mind by samscookie
I didn't get the feeling that I was reading poetry while reading this but it is an interesting read -- and it was an invitation into someone's mind.

There are more good poems, so please go explore.

It's been a while since I made the NPR thread :)
this was kind of the only way I could deal with my family's brewing euthanasia war. i'm glad you liked it, thank you.

Thank you for the nice comment and the review. It made my day. I liked writing that piece, I had this scene in my head of a love struck insect obsessed with the bug zapper as the object of its buggy obsession. I kept seeing this love struck moth thinking the zapper was the most wonderful irresistible giant god/goddess of a moth it had ever seen.

Good Friday the 7th morning. There aren't that many new poems today (da'st I venture to say, "Yet."?) so if I neglect to mention a favourite of yours or even to warn someone off of a rather (in your opinion) odious bit of poetry, please feel free to leave a review here. Keep it about the poems, though, not the poet.

Vox_ offers 2 prose pieces. They're worth a look if only for the way the poet uses the ideas to press home the point.

I'm not sure what ramonathompson is trying to accomplish poetically today but unless you're her hacker you may not want to read her threatening tirade. It sounds like a lot of paranoid postings on the vB boards and is best left alone, I think.

Enjoy the day, everyone.

More have been added. Don't miss Love Sings the Blues by foehn2
Third this

Today wildsweetone has a nice three liner
http://www.literotica.com:81/stories/showstory.php?id=341574

entitled 12/07 Spring Wind, looking like at least some Senna Jawa influence, despite my antipathy to the form, and a mutual hostiliy existent, he is well worth listening too (at least 50%). One of the nicest things I have seen here is the development of wildsweetone by her openess to listening. I wish her well, I wish Senna continued health. Both I consider to be real assets to this place.

and I hope they fix the link button.

Speaking of hated forms
aftershocked sneaks in a sonnet here
http://www.literotica.com:81/stories/showstory.php?id=337821
perhaps some of you sonneteers would leave a comment, me, not being good with these things

One new poem, today. Avoid it.

Thanks.

I hate to be a copycat, but what he said. With all your extra time you can write a poem for the December contest. :)

It would appear that we are on a roll here. For the third day in a row there's been a single early morning posting. So it looks like I can say what she said about what he said. What a relief! :D

I'll look in throughout the day to see if my luck holds as everyone keeps themselves busy shopping instead of writing.

Oh well, looking at it in a positive light, it appears that the dry spell is over with 22 new postings today. Not a flood, thankfully. And from a few of the names I recognized from quickly looking at them, there may be a few with promise.

And before I get started, special thanks to Carrie for lending a hand. Now, let's see what's out there. If only Manu'd get busy and fix the links button — so much easier than having to do it manually.

foehn2 has four in today's offerings, though only three really caught my eye, starting with I Can't Think Any Other Way. Just try out this morsel:
And your neck, so long and smooth,
will never have words like those
with the rhythm of blood that pulse
against the palm of my hand, ear of my heart.
Or perhaps you'd like to try the hopeless romanticism in My Most Erotic Fantasy, which seems less about eroticism and more about a couple's weekend getaway.

Finally, the third from foehn2 is a little love note in the form of Seven Minutes Shy of Ten Hours. And it comes across as just that, a very sweet little love note.

Now from a pen name not see here in awhile, cward2, comes a couple pieces. First up is Slippage, where we're off and looking for the source of the heat this girl keeps giving off. A project sure to take a great deal of time.

Moth is a simple little metaphorical piece {though that last line should be plural rather than singular — unless transmissions should be singular}. Things never are as they seem.

That's it for this week. Again, thanks to Carrie for her help {and she found a few interesting one's you might want to check out}. And once again with my weekly mantra — remember to read, vote, comment ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry.

I'll start reading over them in about an hour to see what's what.[/COLOR]
I've taken a minute and reviewed six of the new poems off the list this morning. Keep in mind that anyone can review the new poems, so if you see a piece that you'd like to mention please feel free to tell us all about it.

In her poem Untitled naughtycakes brings us through myths of evolution and religion. I think she's got too much going on and that her lesson is lost because of it.
As the Greeks graced us
With a pantheon
Entertaining as Jerry Springer on Crack

Killer line!

Star Thief by Gothickun is worth your attention if only to enjoy the excellent metaphor in the poem.

naughtycakes' poem the Aforementioned Appartment is a must read ☺. Don't miss it.

That's it for me. Have a wonderful day.

Thursday

Good morning. I'm probably checking for new poems way too early. There are three posted and there could be more before the day is done.

Sometimes by naughtycakes
I read the first part and was rolling my eyes with such words as: Tears - summoned,/But they won't come/My soul is greedy/Withholding/Their moisture.
Yet those words turn out to be perfect and completely set the reader up for the second half of the poem, which left my rolling eyes wide and bright and a smile on my morning (my god, I need some makeup) face.

And definitely read naughtycakes' One Night Outside
I get dressed
Splashes of color
Ornament myself
This body
This life,

There are 13 new poems this Friday the 14th of December. Only 10 days left before the big one and I'd like to wish you all the best of the season. (Only one before the poetry board's December contest is closed for submissions, too).

Please remember that the opinions expressed here are those of a single person and shouldn't effect how you view the poems or the poet. If you have a piece you feel was overlooked by this review, please include your mention here on this thread. Here is my review.

cutting by lobomao contains a wealth of pain and hurt carried by too many through this season. Read it for the imagery.

Route 35 by DeepAsleep showcases an extended metaphor that's sure to take you on a ride.

Curiouswife is the queen of slice of lovelife poetry. Enjoy it here in her poem, Who, Me?.

In Dreamy, subcake242 brings us on quite a float through some dreamy scenery.

Remembering by MissZ hands us eroticism in plain speaking, not crass or rude, just normal conversation. Check it out.

lancer69 uses repetition to good effect in his poem Speaker of the House. Read it to see if you agree with me that less is more, though.

Enjoy the poetry today and everyday, everyone. Have a great weekend.
