Nighthawk: A Superhero Story (closed for Siobhancan99)

Melanie placed the soup down on the spoon rest. “That’s very true,” she remarked regarding Monica’s last comment. “Do you communicate that need with Ga—” Shaking her head, she said, “I’m sorry. I need to turn off ‘Therapist Melanie.’”

Nodding toward the dining room, she said, “Please, have a seat.” A moment later, Melanie was serving Monica a hot meal and a soft drink, a contented expression on her face.

Monica returned to the table both elated and disappointed that the moment ended. She shoved that ambivalence aside, and took the soda. She sipped at it "I'm not great at that. I'm sure you're shocked. We've fallen into the traditional binary roles in which I, despite looking like this" she rolled her eyes at herself and gestured "have clearly adopted the traditional role of the man. In her defense I can reach things off of shelves she can't and I am killer at opening jars." She dug into the food "this is really good. don't sell yourself short. Nobody ever cooks for me unless I go to Gabi's parents place. My dad and I ate so much takeout as a kid after my mom left that I took over. He grills. Sometimes." She laughed and dug in, the food was warm and it had a salubrious effect on her disposition "thank you for this, Mel. I'm glad you're around and this is just what the doctor ordered, even if it isn't therapy."

Melanie sat and took a few bites of her food as Monica talked about her and Gabi’s relationship, listening closely in the way she always did, though not commenting.

The older woman smiled at Monica’s compliments, sipping some sparkling water. “Aw, thank you. I think I’ve gotten better over the years. Deciding that I was actually going to live and not just subsist after…Paige…certainly helped with that.”

Melanie deftly manipulated her chopsticks as she ate. “You’re more than welcome, Monica. You don’t know how...nice it is to feel this normal again.”

It was 6:06 by the time they’d finished dinner and dessert. The red-haired woman rose to begin collecting dishes. As Monica pushed out her own chair to assist, Melanie walked toward her and leaned down to collect her bowl. “I’ll take care of it. No putting away dishes. Or opening jars. Okay?”

Monica nodded. "I get that for sure" in response to Mel's comment about being normal "For Real."

She leaned back and looked up at Melanie when the woman leaned over "I'm a good guest. I'll tamp that down and not get up and wash the dishes. But only because you asked." She laughed "I mean this is a harder fight than when that metal guy shows up, but somehow I'll persist." She sighed and picked up her soda, sucking an ice cube into her mouth and tasting the last of the Dr. Pepper on it, watching the other woman.

Melanie grinned. “Doctor’s orders,” she said. “This will just take me a minute.” Afterwards, the redhead made her way into the living room, nursing the same glass of sparkling water. She sat on the sofa, draping her left arm over the back, one of three pieces of furniture in the room beside a loveseat and a barrel chair. “Do you and Gabi have plans for the summer?” she asked as Monica tried to choose a seat. Her girlfriend had discussed the possibility of trying to stay in the city over the summer to put in some more hours, but was unsure whether it would be more cost-effective to simply live at home.

The devil on Monica's shoulder made her wonder about how it would feel to have that arm wrapped around her shoulders as she rested against Mel on the couch. As a result, she sat across from the woman instead. She looked over at her, still in part imagining how comfortable that might be "I am wanting to stay in Prospect City. For one, I already go home on breaks and I don't want anyone to put two and two together that the Nighthawk is a college student. Really it is going to depend on where I get an internship. I put in at first line and also another company. I saved the CEO of the other company from being murdered but you know, I can't put that on my resume. Still, have to see. Cottersville isn't exactly near anything."

Melanie took a sip of her drink, slowly shifting her neck as if to stretch it. “I’m beginning to realize I haven’t really thought of many of the complexities of being a superhero.” She smiled. Her cat, Chelsea, wandered into the room and began making her way over to the professor’s shins.

“I don’t…want to…give you the wrong impression but…it can really difficult to find an affordable place in the city. If either of you—or both of you—end up needing a place to stay this summer, you know I’ve got a spare room.” She scratched the cat’s chin, lifting the animal up until it rested its paws across her chest.

Monica’s phone chimed with a text message.

Gabi: 20 minutes away!

“Would you like me to drive you back?”

"A cheap room would be great. Plus you know already where I go at night so no explanations" She laughed and stood, watching Mel play with her cat "Yeah. Gabi's home sooner than I thought so, best be on the way."

She texted "finishing dinner. Mel dropping me off, should be home when you are. miss you. wanna see you."

When Melanie and Monica pulled into the parking lot near the apartment, they could see the lights on inside. “Don’t be afraid to communicate your needs to her,” the older woman recommended. “I’ve only known her a few months, but it’s obvious she adores you. And please try to be kind to yourself.”

Gabi appeared on the doorstep and waved cheerfully to both women.

"thanks mel. I'll try." A lot of her anger had dissipated. Maybe there was something to this talking about your feelings thing. The notion seemed very uncentauri to her, but she did just watch a guy throw himself off a cliff that probably would have benefited from opening up so...

Bounding up the steps she wrapped Gabi up in a hug, then turned and waved to Mel as she tugged her into the building "hey! I'm glad you're home early. For real." She kissed Gabi's cheek and headed upstairs, then collapsed on the couch and buried her face in Gabi's shoulder.

Gabi seemed a little taken aback at Monica’s mood. “Oh…I was…” She smiled and threw her arms around Monica, kissing her forehead.

Once they were in the apartment, Gabi cradled her girlfriend tightly, not even saying much, letting her touches, her embraces, and her tender gaze say volumes. After a while, running her fingers through the older girl’s hair, she said, “Sometimes…I start, like, thinking, there’s two of you. There’s like, the girlfriend Monica—my best friend, Monica—hang around watching Netflix and making jokes Monica, and then there’s like, serious, tough, badass Monica. And I…kind of think, ‘well, that Monica can handle the superhero stuff and the really intense risking her life kind of stuff and not let it faze her. That’s just what that Monica does.’ But I know…I realized that’s not how it works. You can’t separate it out. And…you needed me.”

She kissed Monica’s neck. “Ugh. I’m not making any sense. Can I just hold you for a really, really long time?”

Monica buried herself a little deeper in Gabi's embrace "I did need. you. I do need you. I need my partner and my friend. Physically yes, I'm like... nigh invulnerable" that was a lie, but it was a lie that Gabi probably needed. "But yeah baby. I need you. I need support. I can't. I can't live life alone. I can't face the horrors that I see alone. And you're not not making sense. You're making perfect sense. But I am you know, just a 20 year old girl in addition to being a girl that can pick up a motorcycle and pummel a man with it." She rested her head on Gabi's ample chest "and I need you to ask how I'm doing and I need you to just come into my room and hold me sometimes. I need you to be there and to listen and its not just that I need someone to do it. I need *you* specifically to do it because you're my best friend and you're special and you're not just anyone."

Gabi listened quietly. “I know, sweetie. I’m here for you now. And I’m sorry.” She kissed the top of Monica’s head. “You’re not…going out tonight, are you? Let’s cuddle up in bed together.”

Both of their phones chimed simultaneously. After a few moments' hesitation, the dark-haired girl reluctantly flipped her phone face up. It was a text from Hadley:

Hadley: We should probably hit the station by about 9:15 on Saturday. Sound good?

The three of them had purchased bus tickets for NYC set to depart at 10:15 AM.

Gabi texted back a quick affirmative and then slid her arms around Monica again.

Monica took a moment to order some wings then nestled in "No I'm not leaving the apartment." She rested her head against Gabi, clinging to her "I have everything I need right here" She held her girl close, needing that solidity, the connection. She inhaled, then let out a long slow breath "So what have you been doing the past few days?"

Gabi started to massage Monica’s shoulders. “Mostly spending time with Ana,” she said, digging her fingers in a more deeply. “She was pretty freaked out. I tried to keep her mind off things and keep her busy. Helping Ruben and Cristina getting ready for the protest tomorrow night. Trying to keep up with homework.” She kneaded her girlfriend’s tight muscles. “You?”

"met a hot cop, saved his bacon." She snuggled into Gabi "i'm not sure police work is his thing though. He was definitely gonna barf when I left." She slipped her hand under Gabi's top, but just wrapped her arm around her girl, still clinging to her. She held Gabi, needy, letting her hand rest on the warm soft skin of her girl's side as she curled in against her.

Gabi grinned. “Ooh. Maybe you just need to take him under your wing,” she said. The Latina sighed softly as Monica caressed her. “And you grabbed dinner with Melanie?” Her tone was light. The dark-haired girl pulled Thadeus to her stomach and let out a yawn.

"what like a sidekick? I think the rule for sidekicks is they have to be precocious orphans that are mysteriously signed into your care." She laughed and ran her fingers along Gabi's stomach, tracing the soft skin, touching her and being held "yeah she made noodles. they were good." She kissed Gabi's side "if you want maybe I can teach you to cook some things and we can do that more together."

“That sounds fun,” Gabi said. “I could use a big dose of normal.” She took one of Monica’s hands lightly and kissed her fingertips. “I ordered a dress and a top for our trip to NYC. Or, I guess Mom ordered them for me.” She reached over and pulled up her phone, then showed Monica the receipt with images of the two items of clothing, a white mini dress with lace trim, and a black crop top secured in the front by three ties. “Easy access to the Girls,” she said with a smile as she scrolled down to the latter item. “These are supposed to get here by Friday.” Gabi crossed her fingers.

Monica kissed her girl's neck "You'll look super hot in that." She furrowed her brow "guess I better step up my game." She ran her fingers along under Gabi's breast "I already have easy access to the girls though" She grinned and tangled her legs in Gabi's as they cuddled on the couch. "If they don't get here on time we can pick something up while we're there. I want to see you in that though."

At Monica’s remark about stepping up her game, Gabi said, “Umm...have you seen what you’re wearing tonight? Cuz…yum.” She ran a hand down one of her lover’s fishnet-clad legs, and then let out a little coo as Monica touched the underside of her full breast.

A few minutes later, their delivery driver dropped off the chicken wings they’d ordered. Gabi made her way through a good-sized portion of them as they streamed a show together. After the show finished, Gabi said, “I think I’m going to hop in the shower really quick. I was running around chasing Ana and her friend today and this is also, like, the second day I’ve worn this shirt.” She gave the light blue garment a quick tug and a sniff.

"You smell fine." Monica ran her hand along to cup a breast "do you want some company? or do you feel more like shower and snuggle tonight?" Either was fine, she needed her girl, to hold or to make love to either way. She rested her head on Gabi's shoulder, her fingers lightly stroking her skin, tracing the contours of her curves.

A little smile played at the left corner of Gabi’s lips. She didn’t say anything, grabbing hold of Monica’s hand and giving it a slight tug, then guiding her across the living room toward the open bathroom. Facing away from her girlfriend and toward the shower, she stripped off her pink top, down to her white bra. She glanced over her shoulder at Monica, smiling.

Next, her fingers went to the fly of her tight jeans. She unzipped them, pulling them down her hips, revealing her matching white panties and sticking our her pert rear a little as she stripped down further.

Monica stripped out of her top and skirt, then was more careful with her fishnets. she moved in behind Gabi and kissed her neck, wrapping her arms around her and tugging her back against her "mmm i missed you." she nibbled along the line of Gabi's pulse, then flicked her tongue over her ear "you're all I need or want tonight. I just can't keep my hands off you. you're so fucking sexy angel."

“Mmm,” Gabi purred as Monica put her arms around her. “I’m all yours, querida. I want your hands all over me.” She momentarily moved away from the older girl so she could step into the shower, her eyes tracing her lover’s naked body.

Back against the wall, Gabi started up the shower, starting off with a soft trickle. “Come here, gorgeous.” The water began to run down her bare shoulders and breasts, dampening her long, dark hair. She grabbed hold of Monica’s rear tightly, pulling her in close, then pressing her lips against Monica’s neck. She kissed her firmly, then lightly tugged at the skin with her teeth.
