Non-erotic fiction publish on lit or not, that's the question.

I have a novel series ready, about 400 000 words in total, non erotic fiction, and I've been thinking about where to publish it.

So I'm asking for opinion. Is literotica a good place to get readers for non-erotic fiction or should I try some other platform like wattpad?

If there's nothing erotic in your 400k novel, I'd have thought Lit would be the last place you'd think of publishing.

You've said nothing about its content, so you're not going to get much useful comment.

Lit has engaged readers, even for non-erotic. You'll go begging elsewhere. 400K words is a lot for the casual reader though.
Lit is very low on engagement on the whole. Generally speaking, for every hundred Views you get one Vote, and one Comment per thousand Views. That's not really engagement, it's barely a ripple, let alone a reaction.

Lit has a non erotic category as well as Novels and Novellas so there is a readership, but its not as large as the erotic categories.

As for the length, break it down into chapters.

Just because you post it here doesn't mean you can only post it here. You could post it here, especially if you already have followers, and post it elsewhere with a crowd that you think might appreciate it more.

Okay thanks, I was under the impression that Lit won't accept stories that are published elsewhere. Good to know that I was mistaken.

Not true at all. Lit won't allow you to promote stories on other platforms, but if it's your story, you can publish wherever you like.

Seems to me you should be looking into multiple platforms, including self publishing, to determine what's best. You might even make a dollar or two - although 400,000 words? Have you published 4,000 words, 40,000?

This thread raises an interesting question. If you don't care about making any money from non-erotic fiction and just want to get your work in front of as many engaged readers as possible, where would one post?

Wattpad, Smashwords

Honestly, Wattpad scares me. Not because the community, but because it was hacked several times. I recall in one of those hacks that unpublished drafts were stolen from Wattpad authors. I don't know exactly at what year it happened, but it was less than 7 years ago when Firefox popped up a warning telling me that Wattpad was hacked, and since then I stopped visiting.

Inkitt sounds like a better alternative than Wattpad.

Not planning to make money; I have a job for that, and I know my limits as a writer. Just interested in getting some exposure and feedback, just like here. I have published a book, in my own language years ago. But it wasn't fiction.

Except in Loving Wifes ... there you get 6 votes and rating 1, after 10 views and 2 minutes :D But yes, I see what you mean.

I have several non-erotic novels published on Literotica, and they all do just fine, both with ratings and with reader feedback.

You'll never get the numbers in the "Novels/Novellas" category that you will in "Incest/Taboo", "Loving Wives" or other popular categories, but if you adjust your expectations, you shouldn't be disappointed by publishing them here.

This is just a snapshot of what you might expect with non-erotic content here:

Thank you. I think I need to do some editing and divide the novel into chapters and just go for it.
I'll be sure to read some of you or work too.

Good luck.

One other thing that I should mention is that four of my longer stories were originally submitted in chapters or parts containing multiple chapters. While they did fine, readers overwhelmingly commented that they would prefer them to be single, longer submissions. When I ask the admin to delete the chapters and publish each of the stories as a single submission, the rating for every one of them increased by at least 0.10.

Would that really work for a 400k novel, though? That’s over 100 Lit pages, which sounds like it would get very unwieldy for readers to track their progress throughout. (It’s also several megabytes of text; can the submission form handle it?)

If it's a sci-fi or fantasy novel, or maybe historical (war) fiction, it should still fly on Lit even without any sexual content. Just split it into chapters of adequate length. If it's anything else, Lit isn't the right place for it.

If you want to earn more money than a traditionally published best-seller author, Substack seems to be the way to go:

Has anyone here tried Substack for publishing? I am interested to hear some experiences, if there are any. I am only interested in publishing for free, so questions like the number of readers, engagement, and so on, are what I would like to know.

The longest single submission I've seen on Lit was eighty or so pages, so the answer is yes, the system can handle it.

The OP stated that it was a series totaling about 400K, not that it was a stand-alone story of that length. If it was, I would agree with you that readers would be challenged with something that large.

My largest on here is just under 180K, which is 51 Lit pages. It does fine with the readers who choose to read it.
