It was past 3am when Andrea got the call. A call that every wife of an officer dreads. Andrea's husband, Sergent Marcus Russell, was shot. It was a close call, but nothing life threatening, thank goodness. They were going to be sending another officer over to pick her up and bring her to the ER. The doctor wanted to talk to her before they took the Sgt. up to observation for the night. The way it sounded, the news couldn't be good.

Sgt. Russell was lucky. Extremely lucky. He was shot in the head but the bullet only grazed his temple, knocking him out. He came in and out of consciousness but it wasn't anything too serious. They wanted to keep him for the night.

When the doctor approached Andrea, who calmed down a bit, his features told Andrea something was wrong.

"Mrs. Russell, your husband seems to be suffering from a mild case of amnesia-"

"What?!" Andrea had cried out. "How much does he remember?" She thought everything was going to be all right.

The doctor explained it all. Marcus knew that he was a cop but he didn't remember what city it was for. He knew he was married but he didn't know who his wife was or what her name is. And that crushed Andrea's heart. How could this be?

*********************
Three hours later, Andrea was sleeping in a chair (very uncomfortable to boot) next to Marcus' bed. She hadn't left his side since she was allowed to see him. He seemed to be doing OK so far, despite a medium sized bandage on his right temple.

The story was that a small convenience store was being robbed, some junkie who needed money. He freaked when the cops were called and Marcus arrived. Yet, with no provacation, the suspect shot at Marcus but not before Sgt. Russell shot the junkie. Andrea never wanted to get a call from the force telling her that her husband was shot or never wanted someone coming to her door telling her that Marcus wouldn't be coming home tonight.

Although she still loved her husband, they did have their own problems in their marriage...Marcus had cheated on Andrea a few months ago and she never forgave him for it. But they were working things out...the only thing he didn't know was that to get back at him, Andrea had had an affair also.... but that was all in the past, so it didn't matter as long as they were working things out... so did that change things now?

When Marcus woke up he felt two things. One was a sudden loss, and the other was a pounding headache. The second he was able to deal with, by reaching (clumsily) for the small paper cup of pills that was sitting on the table and tray in front of him. The first, however, he had no idea how to fix. Certain things in his brain were so foggy... He couldn't even remember why he was feeling the sudden loss of, something... When he spotted the pretty woman sitting on the chair next to him, he realized that it probably had something to do with her. Blinking rapidly, he reached out and lightly tapped on her shoulder, "Hey." His voice was really scratchy.

After clearing his throat Marcus tried again, "Hey, excuse me miss..."

This time he tapped her a little bit harder and it seemed to work. She woke up.

God she was pretty, he thought with a smile, I wonder who she is?

"Do I uh... Know you, or well, do you know me? I think something happened and I can't remember. That was what the doctor said, do you know wha- whoa!" She was suddenly hugging him, and he hugged her back gingerly at first, until it clicked when he saw his own ring over her shoulder and on his finger. Right, he was married. "You... you're my wife?" He whispered softly against the side of her head, before kissing her cheek and pulling her back so that he could look at her face. This time differently since he knew who she was now, or at least he thought he did. His eyes narrowed, and he smiled up at her tear clouded ones.

"Don't worry... It's going to be okay... I think," He gave a smile at that, since he really did not know what was going on. Not at all.

"Don't worry... It's going to be okay... I think."

Andrea could only nod, she didn't want to cry in front of him. It was a mixure of relief that he was awake and that he didn't really recognize her...and the fact that he was holding her like he hadn't done in a long while.

She didn't want to break the hold but she also didn't want to start blubbering on his shoulder. So she pushed away from him and made sure that she didn't look him directly in the eyes.

"I know this is probably weird but yes, I'm your wife," she told as she poured him a cup of water so that he could take the meds left for him by the nurses. It was so odd to say that, 'I'm your wife'. Never did she think one day she'd be telling him that.

"Here..." she said in a whisper, handing him the cup. She watched as he finished drinking, she smiled at him, a true smile which made her eyes shine despite the threat of tears, "I'm Andrea.." Man that's weird to say she thought, "How do you feel? I'm so glad you're awake...do you remember what happened? Know where you're at? City?" She stopped, realizing that she was bombarding him with questions.

She gave him a nervous laugh, "I'm sorry, I'm just so glad you're OK."

It was a bombardment of questions, and each one had Marcus seeing a bit more red as he tried to remember. Then all of a sudden he felt something dripping out of his nostril, and when he brought his finger out in front of him to check what it was he saw that it was blood. With a worried smile he took a tissue from Andrea and plugged up his nose. When she apologized he waved it off, "No, no it's okay..." He really did not remember most of those things, and when he tried to remember them it hurt to try. Plus, for now he was quite content to stare across at his wife and learn new things about her. She was quite beautiful. He could not see a blemish upon her skin, and it was such a creamy white. It reminded him of babies skin... Babies, kids? He wondered suddenly if he had any, but instead of trying to remember and make his nose bleed he simply asked her a few questions.

"Maybe it'll be easier if you just tell me? Then I'll see what I remembered and what's new?"

She nodded, and then he started asking questions.

"Do we have any kids? Where do we live? Do we have a nice house? What kind of car do we have? How long, have we been married? Do your parents like me, do my parents like you? What about siblings, how many do you have? How many do I have..." The kept on rolling, but finally he came to the really important one, "How the hell was I lucky enough to make you fall in love with me Andrea? You're beautiful."

Andrea panicked a little when she saw the blood but probably failed at hiding her concern. She didn't want to alarm Marcus. The last thing she wanted to do was upset him.

"Umm...no, we have no kids," she told him. I can't have children remember? She quickly rushed to answer his next question..."We live in a two story house that my parents got us...wait, let me see..." She pulled out her cell phone from her pocket and pulled up some pictures. It took her less than a minute to pull up a picture of their house. "See, it's over on Oak and Carter...about 15 miles from here.." she moved up closer to him, as she handed him her phone.

It just felt so weird telling her own husband about their life. What they had and where they lived. She told him about her parents, and yes, they were still alive, as were his. She was an only child, while he came from a family with 4 older brothers, all whom lived in New York, practically across the country.

"We both get along great with each others' parents. Now...as for marriage.." this brought a smile to her face, "I work over at the department as a secretary for your Captain, I had the job for over 4 years and then you transferred from NYPD to LAPD, things just seemed to click... one thing led to another and after 6 months of meeting, we were married."

"And actually, our anniversary is in less than 3 weeks..." she added, feeling as though she ended it rather abruptly. "So...that's about it, I think you need to get some more rest Marcus, I don't want to over exert you..." she reached over and ran a hand over his, gently giving it a squeeze.

"Really?" Marcus smiled through the pounding headache he had just recently discovered coursing through his head as he tried not to even try to remember anything, but failed as Andrea mentioned it all. He did not remember anything. Not the house. Not his siblings or her lack therof, nothing. It was all new information, but with a determined grimace he decided that he would remember everything she told him now, and so he listened carefully. To everything she was saying, and when she came to their anniversary his startled reply was still echoing in his own mind, really?

"Well... This is quite an anniversary gift, isn't it?" He said with a nervous laugh, as he scratched at his, being careful to avoid the stitches and bandages.

When she mentioned over exerting him he shook his head, "No. It's good to be awake... Sleeping so much makes me even more tired, and really... I don't want to sleep anymore." Grinning a bit sheepishly he whispered, "I'm afraid I'll forget everything. Again."

With a big sigh Marcus shifted into a slightly more comfortable position, and patted the opening next to him, "So. Tell me more about the house. It looks gorgeous."

"So. Tell me more about the house. It looks gorgeous."

Andrea hesitated, only momentarily as she looked at the spot where Marcus was patting, she quickly replaced her hesitation with a smile and crawled into the bed with him. She didn't say but the bed really was uncomfortable.

"More about the house? Well, like I said, my parents bought it for us as a wedding gift. It looks a little small from the front but believe me, the backyard is huge!" Quickly, Andrea was lost in telling her husband about the house when she looked over and saw that he was asleep. With a smile, she carefully got up off the bed and sighed quietly. She watched him sleep for a moment when she turned around and nearly ran into James Carter, Marcus' partner...

And the man Andrea had slept with in order to get back at Marcus when he had cheated on her.

Things between them had always been 'hazy' between them since that one night..a night James thought was going to keep continuing but when Andrea that she didn't want to continue sleeping with him, he took it a little harder than she expected. For a time, he had threatened to tell Marcus but he never did.

"What are you doing here?" She asked, her voice low, yet a little shaky.

"I've come to see my partner, what do you think?" He said with a smirk. "Guess he's still out of it, huh?"

She shook her head, "No, he's awake, he's just sleeping now. Listen, why don't you come back tomorrow, OK? Let him rest...better yet, why don't I call you when he's awake." Andrea didn't want anything to start, especially now, "Please?"

"Why?"

God, there was no bargaining with him, and in her state, Andrea didn't even want to try, "He's sleeping, please James, just go."

She didn't think he was going to budge but finally, he just gave a chuckle and turned, leaving the room. Looking back at Marcus, Andrea saw he was still sleeping and sighed with relief. She would let him sleep while she went to get something to eat. She needed some fresh air and time to think about how to deal with all this...

it took a little while, but Marcus was able to finally go from painfully trying to remember to comfortably learning about his life. By the time he fell asleep he was simply gratefully accepting all the new information until he slipped off into dreamland against Andrea's shoulder. He slept for quite awhile, and when he woke up he felt a whole lot better. No more headache, no more pain, and he did not even really feel the loss of almost his entire life. So instead he rang for something to eat, and he had just finished when Andrea walked back in. He immediately noticed that she had been crying.

"Hey, what's wrong Andrea?" He asked, and with hardly realizing it he stood up.

He did not even feel dizzy. The smile it brought to her face made him smile back.

"Well, apparently I remember how to stand, and walk. That's good, eh?"

He chuckled, and approached her. Then wrapped her in a hug that was at first a little bit awkward, but quickly he got used to it and pressed her smaller frame into his larger one. What quickly became more awkward besides the physical aspect of touching someone he hardly knew, was comforting her for something he knew nothing about when he was the one who had been in a coma. But he supposed him being in a coma, probably took more of a toll on her then it did on him, all he did was sleep!

"Hey..." He tilted her chin up, "What's the deal?" He asked softly, smiling into her beautiful eyes.

With a half laugh, which was probably fake as can be, Andrea just shook her head, "Oh, nothing... I forgot to bring my allergy pills with me. I'm fine, really." She hugged him back, just as akwardly at first as he did, "Hey, look at you..." With a gentle hand, Andrea pushed at Marcus, trying to get him back to bed, "Let not do too much right now all right?"

As usual he was too strong for her and it was like a mouse trying to push an elephant..no use whatsoever. With a sigh, she felt his grip tighten on her arms, "Really, I'm fine...besides, I have some good news, I talked with the doctor and he said you could probably be well enough to go home tomorrow, isn't that great? Now, come on, get back into bed.."

It was good news, very good news indeed, tomorrow! Back to a home and life that he did not remember. He pushed the thought aside and laid down, smiling up at Andrea and nodding his head as she explained why the doctor thought it was okay for him to go home. None of it really made sense, but he was glad anyways that they would be going, and she would be going with him, if she was this concerned about him now he could only imagine how crazy she had been when he actually got injured. In fact, he almost felt bad for getting hurt, what it must've put her through.

"Andrea..." He said softly, and then a little louder because she didn't hear him and just kept on worriedly talking, "Andrea. Hey, it's okay. Everything is going to be okay... I'm, I'm sorry, for getting hurt, I can tell you are worried, and already I'm falling in love with you again. This whole... Starting over thing, is going to be a piece of cake."

Then, after a little while he fell asleep. Upon waking up the next day they left rather early, and even though the hospital required him to ride all the way to the exit in a wheelchair, he walked under his power the rest of the way to the car, and did so with ease. Physically, he actually felt really good. Well rested, and just in need of a little bit of a workout. Something to get his body going at full throttle. He jogged a little on their way up to the house, and smiled at Andrea when she worriedly told him to take it easy, "Nah." He replied with a grin, "I feel great... In fact... I could go for some... Physical exertion," He winked, but wondered how all that would go. Would they really have sex so soon? No, he figured. They would have to go on a few dates he supposed... Even though they were married.

"So should we go out for dinner, or just stay... Whoa, lotta messages..."

Before Andrea could stop him, he pressed play on the recording machine, and almost immediately he recognized the voice of his partner. He had visited him once, in the hospital, when Andrea was not around. What he was saying didn't really make sense, and it was directed more at Andrea then at him... "What is this?" He asked, pointing to the tape, and raising an eyebrow at his wife.

"Andrea. Hey, it's okay. Everything is going to be okay... I'm, I'm sorry, for getting hurt, I can tell you are worried, and already I'm falling in love with you again. This whole... Starting over this is going to be a piece of cake."

That could be both good and bad… Andrea thought as she just smiled up at Marcus, looking deep into his eyes. He was right; they could start over, couldn’t they? All she had to do was keep the past as it was, it was in the past… but wasn’t that a little selfish? Keep the past from him about their marriage and just move forward? Start over as it was?

Her mind was racing about all of this but she kept her thoughts from him as she finally got him back into bed. It didn’t take a lot of talking as he just pulled him next to her, holding her in his strong arms.

Yes, they could start over. She make sure he never knew about the past or about what she had done. There would be no bringing up talks about a divorce, no talks about their affairs. Perhaps she could finally get him to quit his job at the force and get a real job… Yes, everything would be fine.

For the first time since she arrived at his side, Andrea finally relaxed against her husband.

Yes, everything would be all right.

The next day at home, Andrea was a little giddy to finally show him their home. She had been the one to redecorate the entire place and it was something she was always proud of.

"So should we go out for dinner, or just stay... Whoa, lotta messages..."

“Wait honey, NO!” How the fuck could she forget about them?! There was still one from James on there she was sure. He had tried to call her the night of the accident! Why the fuck hadn’t she erased it?!

"Hey there, I know you said not to call but since Marcus is working the rest of the week, I just wanted to let you know I have tonight and tomorrow night off…call me Hun, I really need to burn off some energy…"

"What is this?"

Oh shit!! She had to think fast, what was she going to say? With a calm breath, which surprised herself, Andrea just shrugged and tossed her purse on a chair, “I’m not sure…” God, it was too late, how the hell was she going to explain it?

“Listen, I’ll just cook tonight, all right?” With a fast turn, she hurried toward the kitchen. All her previous fears she had pushed aside the day before had all come back with a rush. She found herself leaning against a countertop, breathing hard…
