I'm watching it on France24 and the whole roof is burning.

the spire fell.

it looks like the statues of the apostles were removed four days ago for restoration.

Serves those fucking white Christians right.

Bout time they got diversified.

Hopefully someone from the religion of peace assisted it's demise.

When you think of everything it's survived, it's hard to believe it could be gone in the space of a couple of hours. When Louis XIV reigned, Notre Dame was already 500 years old.

I wonder if Quasimodo escaped. He would not have been able to hear the fire sirens.

From the live pictures on the BBC it looks like it's just spread to the bell towers.

There's probably nothing that could have been done (it's not like they installed sprinklers in the 1100s), but I guess I assumed that an iconic structure nearly a millennium old that's mostly made of wood and contains priceless art and religious relics might have a more ... urgent fire-fighting plan?

Really sad. One of our neighbors has a huge chime in their backyard. The wind usually isn't strong enough to cause it to chime. It's been chiming for an hour now, though--like it knows.

I walked by Notre Dame in 1975, not having the sense to go in. Sorry I didn't now. I have visited other great/old cathedrals in Europe and it's incredible what they were able to build all those years ago.

It's progress.....a symbol of hate, patriarchy, racism and whiteness has fallen and it's a good thing.

Build a mosque on the rubble.

Half my Twitter feed right now:

"I remember being in Paris and thinking, next time I'm here I'll take time to visit Notre Dame. Well...fuck."

Life lesson. Don't put shit off. Cause you never know.

I went with a gf twenty odd years ago. Stunning building, inside and out.

I would have liked to have seen it, were it not infested with French people.
