I haven't been to a nude beach, but the sign at the local one warns you "may" encounter nude sunbathers. It seems like it's not required.

I went to a clothing optional swim party. Not really sure how I would feel.
I spent the day topless like the woman on the lounger next to me. She was a return guest.

In Europe the bathers on nude beaches are in various stages of undress, so if she chose to wear a bikini, swimsuit, dress, or dog collar, that wouldn't be frowned upon.

My wife was always a topless sunbather and I was always full nude, but a few years ago I pointed out that her yellow bikini bottoms had become see through in the sea and she might as well be full nude - she agreed and whipped them off and has never looked back (except with fond memories).

My wife has been on a number of nudist beaches in France and Spain with me, she keeps her costume on and nobody seems to bat an eyelid.

I have also been on nudist beaches in the UK, without her, and there have been a number of people in swimming costumes or clothes. You are fine unless you are obviously just there to perv.

If it's a nude beach or nude resort, everyone is expected/required to be nude unless there's a health reason for wearing some cover (ie. a woman's period when she's wearing bottoms, young kids using a playground there, or someone recently having skin issues.)

If many of the people are wearing bathing suits and some not, then it's a "clothing optional" place. Some resorts will identify in their ads that they are "NUDE, not clothing optional", because they don't want gawkers there (clothed prudes there only for the view.)

For public nude beaches, it's probably anybody's guess, because there are probably no clothing police anyway. But if you're at a place listed as "nude", anyone wearing bathing suits for no particular reason except their own prudishness would be looked down upon as a gawker or perv. If you want to stare at my wife's pussy, have the courtesy to show her your junk, too.
