OK so i blew up my computer today

Pop open an explorer window and check the contents. Your Dell tech may have created the directory. If it's empty, skip the step and move on to the red, black and blue.

If it's not empty, you have a few choices. If you're really cautious, change that directory name to something like !junk.

For the actual procedure, substitute c:\windows1\!junk for every instance of c:\windows1\tmp.
lol ok, if this directory exists, why can't i find it in here, even when i do a search. Its like all this stuff is stuck in the twilight zone.

Now just so i know. when i do the red black and blue ones, whats going to happen? or i should say...what's supposed to happen? Im going to wait til morning to do it but am just interested to know what the outcome should be

BTW AA, your patience is greatly appreciated :)

Are you looking for that directory while in the version of operating system that works, or doesn't? Try the one that works first, and make sure you open subfolders down to the correct level. See attachment for a search i did on my machine. i picked up 113 entries searching for "tmp" on my boot drive including three directories. Search should find it. One other thing, look at the second and third attachments to make sure you've enabled the search to look in system folders.

You're making cop(ies) of the file(s) the operating system uses to start changing their names to something the operating system will ignore and placing it in a location the operating system won't look. To back out of the procedure, (reverse the effects of the "black" steps that follow the red) you copy the files back to their original locations and remove the "*.bak" extensions to make the files visible to the operating system again in a place the o/s will look for them.
Kajira Callista said:
You're deleting the corrupted file(s) (don't freak, you've made copies during the red steps) that won't let XP start and cause XP to give you the error message you see.

and blue ones
You're copying uncorrupted files (ones that worked from the very first time you had the operating system up and running) into a location the operating system can find and use.

You should be able to select the iteration of XP that produces the error, not get an error, and have access to the files you currently can't reach. Once there, you should copy the files out of their present locations to another directory. Is the phrase back-up ringing a few bells now?

It's not patience, it's stubborness, but you're quite welcome.

I gave in an bought handy recovery. its running and seems to be working.
"Handy" recovery? Such an interesting choice for you to pick.

If all of your files are recovered and the crisis is over, I think you should give yourself a good switching with a nice springy switch from a tree, for not properly backing them up, in the first place. Think of it as being taken to the wood shed, your ear used as a handle, as you are forced to keep up with your tormentor's quick pace.

Once in the woodshed, you are forced to strip to your panties while he watches, after which you are pushed down over a dirty bale of hay where shackles are revealed and you are soon totaly helpless.

After a while of watching you wiggle and squirm, your panties are wrenched down to your knees and your vulnerable bottom is switched until your ass is so marked with red stripes and sore, you will remember to do as you're told from now on **.

Now, in my version, I pull your head up by your hair and force you to suck my cock until it's good and hard, then I fuck you in the ass and cum deep inside you.

**Well, at least until you forget something that deserves another trip to the wood shed.

Anyway, it is taking forever (lots of music files) but it is working and the headache has gone and i feel like i can breathe again.

YAY! it got me everything i wanted back...even though it sucks that Dell wouldnt/couldnt do it for me and i had to buy a program .

Point taken. OK, if this happens again, be sure you've backed your stuff up, or there's no wood shed for you!

It is strange, isn't it. And, I believe it should have been possible for AA to get your files back, if a program can get them back. But, I think what the Dell guy did/didn't do hindered AA from being able to help you.

I think AA would have figured out a way to get around the Dell guy's screwup(s), but some people are just impatient, yanno? ;)

Maybe she needs a trip to the wood shed, just for that. :p

Didn't work the command is not recognized is what it kept telling me.
Interesting. i'm curious which command didn't get recognized, but the point is moot if you retrieved your files, the whole point of the exercise. Best of luck in the future and hope you back things up as well. By the way, if you still can't install NAV or other things, i'd hurry up with the back-up, nuke the entire drive and start from scratch.

But like AA said, some viruses and malware can disable Antivirus programs, just so they have more time to piss you off with their crap. After you finally figure out how to get the antivirus programs to work, the bad guys have had time to do their worst.

I remember one malware pest I contracted that enabled the active desktop, and put some stupid warning up as the wallpaper telling me I should go to a specific web site to get the needed remedy to fix things. If I clicked anywhere on the desktop that wasn't an icon it tried to send me to some stupid adware fixer site. I couldn't get to the active desktop controls, or the control panel. I also couldn't use the run command to edit the registry. Every time I went into I.E. (which wasn't very often) it would do some more nasty stuff and send me to some lame search engine site.

I had Netscape on the computer, and this thing didn't affect it, so I searched for a remedy, finding it in on a hacker's site where they were all infected by it and were sending forum messages back and forth of what each had done to remove it.

I just lucked out because none of the intivirus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.)had a fix, and even when someone checked my system with HiJackThis, they couldn't find anything. It turned out to be a pretty easy thing, but I had to boot up to the command line, and delete a couple of files and then reboot. Then, I could edit the registry and turn the active desktop off and clean the rest of the culprit off my drive. It only affected my desktop and I.E. and it didn't damage anything, but it was sure an annoying pest!

OK now, what was the point of this post? Oh yeah...you need to see if you still have that virus lurking around. Watch where you save files before you redo the computer, if that's what you're going to do. Depending on how the virus populates, you could save it in one of your files and then replace it along with them, onto your newly redone computer.

Whatever files you back up, be sure to check them before you put them back on your drive and use them.

Isn't that hard on the microwave?
Not really, and who suggested a microwave? If i'm that ticked off, i remove the HDD and use it for a Frisbee. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-8/363868/2cool2.gif

Time to call a Dell and have them walk you through a clean install. Don't forget to save the program you purchased to recover files (and any attendant files, keys, or passwords as well.)

My apologies. When i deal with a Gordian Knot registry FUBAR (whether creatred by virus, or simple aging of the O/S), i save off data (usually just the web favorites) from the (first physical) boot (operating system) drive, remove encryption from the (second physical) data drive, remove said data drive from the computer, then nuke the boot drive. That involves a re-parition of the boot, a DoD wipe, blowing away the partition again, and building the O/S from scratch with NTFS. If a virus can survive that, it's in the cockroach league and leaves my AO along with the HDD.
