Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

The Meters were a New Orleans based funk band that became popular in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I highly recommend checking out their catalog, because it’s all fantastic. When the Meters broke up in the mid-70’s, two members (Art and Cyril Neville) joined their brothers to form The Neville Brothers, which was another phenomenal band worth diving into.

Why am I talking about The Meters and posting a Robert Palmer song? Palmer recorded his debut album in New Orleans, and for this one album, The Meters stepped in to be his studio band. Forget everything you’ve ever heard Robert Palmer do in the late 70’s or 1980’s, because this is nothing like that material. It’s easily my favorite Palmer album and one of my favorite albums in general. It truly is a hidden gem.

And one more...

The Beach Boys - Surfin'

EDIT: listening again and these lyrics jumped out at me:

I got up this morning turned on my radio
I was checking on the surfing scene To see if I would go
And when the DJ tells me that the surfing is fine
That's when I know my baby and I will have a good time

Does anyone know if this was a thing in California (or maybe elsewhere) where the DJs on the radio would report surfing conditions? If so, I would assume, and maybe incorrectly, it would be limited to the pop/rock stations at the time. Just kind of curious.

Thank you man. This is a real gem!

21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
Considering what even the best bands were doing in 1969, this song and album 'In the Court of the Crimson King' reset the bar and, arguably, the entire 'prog-rock' era that took root in the 70s stems from here.

And the title cut - used to perfection as the soundtrack of a dying empire in 'Children of Men.'

You're No Good Linda Ronstadt
So this one is special… I always loved the original, just sounded so cool with those subtle chord changes.

Then Van Halen came out, and covered it… mind blown! I was a huge fan of Van Halen, especially in those early days.

My little brain would explode if I had to choose between Linda’s version of Van Halen’s.

Franky, between The Kinks “You Really Got Me” and Van Halen’s? No contest. I practically realized I had no choice but to play guitar when Eddie played those opening chords… still sends chills through me. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I'm going back through recent posts and @Elmo_Lincoln posted some fun surfer music which I grew up listening too.... so I'm adding to that..

The Beach Boys - The Shift (Mono/Remastered 2001)

I'm not sure what year that was recorded, maybe 62 or 63? But listen to how really good the recording is! And the guitar sound just pops out of there. I don't know if that is actually Carl Wilson, but it sure sounds great.

I have no idea how many years it has been since I heard this - the Beach Boys doing this song... but I love it as much today as all those years ago.
♥️♥️♥️♥️

The Beach Boys - Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow (Live / 2001 Remastered)

The Beach Boys - Let's Go Trippin' (Stereo)

I suspect it isn't obvious to anyone listening to me play guitar... but this song was a HUGE influence on me. The sound is so cool! I still love it like I did nearly 50 years ago. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

The Beach Boys - Stoked

Sorry if this isn't your thing.... but these early tracks were such a huge influence on me and I am as happy to hear them today as I was when I was 10 playing them in my bedroom with my best friend. ♥️♥️♥️

I didn't even remotely understand the title as a kid... but as an adult musician, realizing, Carl Wilson was in a vocal band. As a guitar player, he wasn't ever going to be featured. It's kind of sad, but he totally kicked ass.

And do not even get me going about Dennis Wilson... who was in the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" as the mechanic... which is an absolute cult masterpiece...
