Old School Musicianship… Rock and Roll.. Jazz… Blues… Big Band even…

With Record Store Day fast approaching, I always like to revisit my all time favorite blind buy on Record Store Day. It was about 15 years ago, and I was digging through a crate marked “Metal”. I saw this album by a band called “Faith”. The album cover was in B&W. The font looked kinda gothic. The album was produced in 1974. I’m thinking this is probably going to be some really cool, sludgy proto-metal like Sabbath or Sir Lord Baltimore. I could not have been more wrong and any happier to have been wrong. What I got instead of sludgy grungy proto-metal was one of the crispest and tastiest slices of funk with a fantastic horn section, fantastic guitar licks, and a rhythm section that created a pocket the rest of the band could live in. This remains my favorite blind buy of a record I’ve ever picked up.

The Monthly Musical Challenge today is "local artist." I grew up in Portland, so trying to cull down to one killing me.

I was fortunate enough to catch a show during their first U.S. ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ tour. Standing stage side, slightly left of center. The pyrotechnics singed my beard, mustache, and eyebrows. Totally worth it.
