It was hardly the best Humphrey Bogart movie but he couldn’t blame her, To Have and Have Not had yet to find its way to his shelf. As the standard previews began to roll across the screen it was easy for Jonathan to let his daughter wrap her arm around him. It felt comfortable, as though it were where it was always supposed to be. If she needed to feel that extra protection, that added security then he wasn’t about to take it away. Hell, even if she didn’t.
His own liquor lied in his hand now as he took casual drinks from it while his daughter downed whatever she needed from hers. In the back of his mind he wondered if she’d even remember their meeting or anything after it. And that line of thought made him wonder if she’d remember anything else that would happen.
But Jonathan decided to be good for once. It was his daughter and she wanted nothing more than a father, he told himself. It didn’t matter that she was attractive, that she was lying this close to him or that she seemed to want him to be even closer. He had to tell himself that it was nothing more than emotional stress finally able to wane after all these years. Of all the broke down homes and of all the towns in between around the world, she had to walk into his.
Even with the doubt in his head he couldn’t keep himself from lowering his lips to her forehead, placing a gentle kiss against her skin. Just the scent of her, the feel of her told him that all the lies he’d been telling himself through the night were exactly that: Lies. While he wasn’t sure if he wanted a woman forever, he understood that he wanted his daughter at least for one night.
