About to start writting my first story, does anyone know of somewhere you can write stories online, save them online and go back and forth to edit them?

Ps- is there a way to make sure it does get linked to google's social network? I don't use it, but I prefer not to have everything collected together.

No. You lose all control of your document if you post it on Google docs. Google then decide who may or may not see or change or delete it. Read the small print.

It is a little better on Yahoo if you start a "Group" and make it members only and then don't let anyone else join.

If it's the "free of charge" part you're after as alternative to MS Office you may consider LibreOffice as well. It's off-line, but at least you have full control over where your docs are saved.
Personally I've never been able to imagine why one would want to write stuff in an online word processor instead of one that's running on your own computer.

There is a very good reason to write it on-line: if you use multiple computers from multiple locations, it saves you from having to carry around a flash drive or other form of storage. The latest version is always there on line.

That is not true at all. By default, Google Docs are all private. If you want them shared, you have to go out of your way to share them.

Unless you think Google is some evil empire that is actually sharing your docs against your will and in violation of their own privacy policy. But I doubt they have much temptation to share the average user's drivel with anyone else.

I agree, but they reserve the right to do so. Add to that the number of "hackers" who glory in buggering everyone's security ...

Also, if you don't want your parents borrowing your computer and accidentally discovering your porn WiPs (and don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a separate user profile).
