OOC: High Fantasy Roleplay/Strategy...In the Valley

To late?

Is it to late to add a race? I watched your other strategy thread and found it interesting and I'm a big fan of fantasy.

Since there hasn't been a reply, and since i have to leave for the weekend I'm just going post my race.

Rhyl'nar leads a group of drow. He's 6ft tall, and has black skin and shoulder length white hair, as do most drow. His eyes are a piercing ice blue. He has infravision like most creatures that dwell beneath the surface. He was once a drow noble but shifting politics and an attack by a rival forced him and his houshold to flee to the Valley. The ruling council is comprised of him, the high priest Ardul'eari, the head of the army Neer'teb and the oldest drow, Zes'bryn.

The majority of the drow live in a system of caverns and tunnels underground, though there is a small settlement on the surface that is used as a lumber camp and a hunting outpost. There are a total of 5 tunnels leading to the surface and they can all be collapsed making the drow nearly impossible to get at.

Their religon centers around a Nothingness, from which they believe all was created and which all will someday return. Since the Nothingness created both men and woman, the drow believe they are both equal. Another belief is that when they die they join the Nothingness. This makes them most fearful in battle as they never retreat because they know when they fall, they will join the Nothingness.

As drow live a very long time, children are rare an adult drow will do anything to make sure a child is safe, regardless of race. When a child comes of age they are marked with the clan tatoo on the left cheek.

Though they are more comfortable underground, they do go to the surface, and have learned to cope with sunlight. They do not farm but instead the like to hunt, regarding it as more fun. Some of them are skilled fishermen and sailors, having much experience on underground rivers. They are also skilled miners and blacksmiths, finding many metals as the carve new tunnels, They trade their finished works to merchants that happen by and get things they cannot procure in exchange.

Their standing army is comprised as follows, but everyone knows how to use a weapon and will fight if needed.

120 archers
120 swordsmen
40 spearmen
20 scouts

Skilled workers

25 miners
30 hunters
10 blacksmiths
5 goldsmiths/silversmiths
15 stonecutters
20 lumberjacks
10 fletchers
10 priests
20 carpenters
10 alchemists
5 lorekeepers
15 fishermen
20 healers
5 cartographers

The rest of the population is mostly elders and children, though there are maybe 150 adults without a set profession.

Fishrule

Welcome aboard........another player just brought your post to my attention.........have had a very busy day. I like what I have read....some fine tuning and I think it will work just fine. So if your still online drop me a note.......I will include you with the latest batch of updates.

Phase 2...More players more gifts.

"A holy relic, new building for their settlement, a unit unique to the player's settlment, and helpful advisor character."

Friar’s Church...a Gladiator's settlement

Once taking charge of the village you soon took stock of all that was their for the taking. It seemed best to leave everything in place but keep in mind you are lord and master so everything is you're for the taking anyway (feudalism is great isn't it). In the church the priests show you a small alter on the main grounds with is locked and guarded at all times. Inside you find a caldron which after a placing it above a fire and uttering a simple prayer fills with beef stew. Keep in mind it does not even have water inside. The priests tell you that this large caldron can produce two large family meals two times a week. Unless there is a greet need or another holy day. The stew tastes very good and is very filling.

The Elves are among the greatest lovers of the woods so when wood must be harvested it is done with the utmost care. So many years ago the Elves built a mill in the settlement. It has the finest of working tools and the best craftmen are employed within the structure. When a tree comes to them every piece of wood is used in some project. The goal is always zero waste. Also the wood is treated to be stronger and slower to burn. This is so that lumber is needed less often for work around the settlement. A shrine two the Elven nature Goddess that is part of the mill must be maintained at all times.

Sometimes being a living legend puts a warrior in a position that of always needing to live up to the myths around them when they are just men. An asset though is reputation. The legend of a settlement controlled by a former slave warrior gives hope to many in chains. So after several summers have passed in the valley some 200 gladiators come to your village. Different stock then you they have heard tales of you, and have come for freedom after escaping a gladiator training school. They are at best lite infantry and favor fighting individually rather then as a group. Each day they live like their last drinking hard and fighting hard. They hate slavery......

Casca......is the mercenaries mercenary. He has been there killed that and lived to talk and boast about his exploits. He has been past great Eastern mountains and fought with and along side the great samurai clans. He has been across the great sea to fight the cyclops tribes for the redskinned warriors. He comes to you so he can settle down and rest. He plies his trade as a blacksmith in your barns, but is always willing to give advice over ale....

Failte of Ravenswood Clan

One reminder of past greatness is your clan's blessed battle standard. To carry it into battle it a rallying point and boasts the courage of all those from your clan that follow you as well as allies and mercanaries taking part in your cause. In peace time it sits next to your throne so all can feel your power. It radiates strength and power.

Among your clans is a proud tradition of chariot making. These vehicles carry 2 men pulled by 2 horses in to battle with lighting speed. The can run down enemies or smash a wagon apart. The wreck attackers on the battlefield and rule the roads. So two families have united to build a large shop to build these war vehicles and a small field next to the workshop is fenced in and has some of the finest warhorses breed to pull chariots.

The Sisterhood of the Pentacle are witch cousins of your Druids. These women are mostly human though there are more then a few half-elves in their band of 200 warrior witches. They can make simple potions but are best known for their short bows and razor sharp longswords. They are savages on the battlefield and love to ambush enemies. No one truly knows what to make of these women though. In the cottages they live in they will have skulls hanging from their kills next to gardens filled with flowers. They will cover themselves with detailed tattoos depicting their victories, but spend half a day making perfume. They love women but enjoy the company of men as friends and partners in making children. To kill a demon is considered the greatest of acts among them...

Venutius is a huge human said to be of giant blood. He is among the strongest men in the Valley and has long flowing blond hair and matching beard. He came to the Valley years before your clan to ply his skills as woodsmen, mercanary and lumberjack. He is always one for sage advice and had bedded many women in the village. He makes an interesting advisor to say the least.

Drow

The Library of Nothing.....doesn't sound impressive but it is a collection of books on the Drow Faith. Gathered by religious leaders for generations the books are always a source for inspiration, and information. One can merely enter the cave where they are stored read for a time and come out with a new sense of purpose.

Many years past when the Drow began to expand their network of tunnels they came on a large cavern that was only the beginning. When taking mineral samples a young Drow found a vein of adamantium. Mining the area has been difficult, but many believe there is a huge amount of this super hard metal. Only the best smiths with the best tools ca work with the special metal.

Along with the cave system the Drow find they have some odd allies they are not sure they want. Some 200 Kobalt warriors live near one of the main Drow tunnels near a tempe to six armed demon like war gawd. In the temple also lives their queen who is wise but mostly just lays eggs. Shorter then humans these creatures appear like gray raptors. They are skilled mostly at digging and like shinning gems. They like sharp short spears and wide blades and even trade for clevers from human merchants. If you will never fight one Kobalt because they are cowards so they are in never in groups smaller then 10 and suddenly become brave. With their quick growth from eggs their ranks are quickly filled but seldom go beyond 200 because of concern for food supply (roast bats but will eat woodland creatures).

Mayalari is your main advisor. She has blood red hair and is a mix of Drow and Elf blood. She has worked as both whore and assassin and is passion about her love making and killing. She has blood red nails that can grow to claws in the heat of battle. She often walks about barefoot in a loin cloth and leather corset. She is said to collect trophies, but no one knows for sure. Still she is wise in matter of the state and keeps her moments of passion or some say insanity in check. She is always up for a game of chess and discussion.

Let me know what you think....any solid problems with your gifts (don't fit your story at all for example) let me know and we can work something out......Well more information to come.

Who Lives in the Valley

The Valley is located in what many refer to as the Northern Chain in the region. The range is vast with some of the tallest of mountains and as one goes North it grows colder until one reaches the frozen Northern lands.

The Valley is large and lush though if not isolated. The River flows from North to South with the river eventually making its way to the Great Inland Sea.

The Minotaurs... The settlement of the great bulls is perhaps the farthest North in the Valley and occupies large open plains and many grassy hills. Though not on the river itself the minotaurs have access to the river through many deep streams. On the edge of the plains though are the tall strong trees the Valley is known for.

Nearby the furry cat creatures known as the Felid are Southeast from the Minotaurs in the woods near The River. Cats are not ones for water, but do like to eat fish. They make their home in the tall trees and the Felid border is some 5 miles from the beginning of the plains the minotaurs call home.

Carved from the side of the moutain roughly South of the two other settlments is the plateu home of Divine's Blessing (Dragon controlled) settlement. Some of the settlement is built in the woodlands below and any roads built lead to that part of the settlement.

The Wood Elves South of the Minotaurs near the center of the Valley not far from the River the Wood Elves. Like the Felid they make their homes in the trees though roads to the area will find farms and other buildings. They are some 15 miles from the Dragons though there are some well carved trails.

Valencians who boast an impressive port are some 10 miles South of the Wood Elves and are the only settlement directly on The River. Though they have a network of their own roads they do not extend far from their settlement.

Ricardo’s Peoplereside some 12 miles Southwest of the Dragons and some 10 miles Southeast of the Elves. The small farming community is surrounded by woods on all sides and some 10 miles too the mountains in the West and 10 miles to the River which is near the Valencians.

The Ravenswood Clan has been known to move about the Valley but are currently on the bank of the Western shore working the fertile fields their. Their primative settlement is some 12 miles South of the Valencian port which is more advanced.

The Drow are perhaps the farthest South though in their underground network. The few above ground structures they do have are 18 miles from the central Elves.

My race The Trumpets.... have an impressive settlement built on a stream leading to The River which is only 3 miles away. They are neighbors to the Raveswood some 8 miles away. ( I will post a page on my furry friends soon)

I didn't include trails and streams that lead to The River so feel free to add them if it would help your settlement. The "invasion" is happening on the Eastern side of the River.....all settlements are on the Western side (nobody noted that they wanted it differently). Last chance for changes before we begin so let me know.....we will continue this thread to answer questions as we continue playing.

Be back soon to post the first turn. Every one is ready to play it.

Your Thread starters Race......

The Trumpets..... (found in pair of delightful children's books called Trouble for Trumpets and Trumpets in Grumpet Land) are a peaceful race of farmers and minors. Best described as average human size creatures that look like furry light brown hippos (sorry no illistrations online of these little guys). The females have long hair on the top of their heads and are easily distinguish from the males. Generally good natured and playful these creatures average life span is 80 years. They like to farm and all have large gardens. There homes actually look like small grassy hills with chimmies. The homes are very cozy with windows and large fireplaces, and often several levels below ground with tunnels connecting different buildings (example main house to the barn). They do understand that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance so they do maintain army and police force which all serve in at different times. Every house hold is required by law to maintain a small cash of arms and armor for militia duty. The spring and summer is spent farming and celebrating the warm weather in the Valley. Winter time though they are most inactive and mostly stay to their homes where they drink gallons of hot chocolate and put logs on the fire. Trumpets are generally friendly to everyone that is nice to them in turn. Owls are an important part of their culture and Trumpets firmly believe that giant owls saved them from great floods settling them in the Valley. They worship a human nature goddess TRYAMON (Goddess of Nature, Farners, and Unicorns) who is said to sent the owls to save the Trumpets in their darkest hour for all the food they provided for her unicorns over many winters. There other settlements of Trumpets but the Valley isolates this group and it has been ages since they have heard from any other groups.

Leadership: Young Chadwick finds himself newly in command of the settlment of Farmborough since his older brother Dale went missing during a search of the Eastern shore this passed week. With his brother missing Charwick takes the place his brother and father once held on the leadership council which sits 5 with the leader breaking the ties in votes. Chadwick is a strong Trumpet of 21 who is able to lift a full barrel of cider over his head easily and very skilled with a war ax (bought from Dwarves) and the traditional broad sword. He is very concern with all the strange happenings and has even sent a messanger to alert the Ravenswood Clan who are neighbors.

The council includes:

Elsdon......he is a scribe and teacher.
Derward.....he is head of the forest patrol.
Howland.....he is the largest landholder and noble.
Bonnie.....she is a boat builder and merchant.
Radellar....she is an Elf and one of the few nonTrumpets to serve on the council
and is keeper of the scared texts.

The Army:

The troops on the frontlines are all male in the Trumpet army with the females running the home guard units. All the troops are issued a broadsword, round shield and a spear. The armor includes a metal helmet, leather boots and gloves, and chainmail shirt. Of the 300 some 100 are also issued pikes and are know as the "old guard" since they are mostly veteran troops. Another 100 soldiers work as forest patrol and additionally carry a lantern, club, manacles, and a long knife, and throwing axes. The remaining 100 are the "scout column" and instead of wearing the traditional red and white of the settlement they wear green clothes and armor. They have standard issue equipment and signal horns, but carry a variety weapons taken off of enemies from the Valley (bandits, raiders, poachers). Some officers and men-at-arms do wear full plate thoughit is not common. Also leaders are the only ones to be mounted for combat so they can move about the battlefield more easily. The 300 ususally operate in units of 10 when patrolling or guarding structures, but in large battles they will link up and make sheild walls or squares. The army is strong but seldom tested in the field.

Skilled Workers:

30 Farmers
10 Blacksmiths
3 Weaponsmiths
2 Armorers
10 Masons
10 Carpentars
10 Lumber Jacks
5 Woodworkers
1 Innkeepers
2 Scribes
1 Surgeon
3 Goldsmiths/silversmiths
2 School Teachers
15 Fishermen
10 Boatbuilders
10 Hunters
20 Healers
5 Shopkeepers
10 Herdsmen (sheep, cows...etc)
1 Cook
5 Priests
5 Witchhunters/Investigators
10 Minors
10 Alchemists
10 Constables

The remaining 500 all work and live in the settlement proper. Mostly women and children or those peasants apprenticing to those skilled works above waiting to take their place.

Off to a good start with some good posts.......some building, research, and questions. Also I will give a little out of game knowledge.....The scouts said they "looked like Demons."

Revised...

Excellant to see players communicating on there own already. I don't want to respond to all the turns at once but I would like to see more come into play.......get more of an idea of who thinks what about who and see what people think turns should look like. Have more evil races already selected and your next forays across the river shall find some interesting things.
