Ornithamateurs - The Birding Thread

That's what, say 65 f ..18 Celsius? Great, god, i'v forgotten how it feels. :). Even in a mild winter. :)

Forgive me if this is teasing, but we'll be closing in on 32 C by Monday. I am NOT happy, but I'm grateful for this week's lapse into a few cooler days before the spring/summer onslaught.

Crows are something else I don't see a lot of in my part of Texas. Crows, and Robins. I miss them both. A lot of people don't like crows, but I like all of the bigger birds. Ok! and all of the smaller ones :)

Mystery finally solved regarding the bamboo hedge birds. They are starlings, and nothing else. IT turns out starlings are good at mimicry, and related to the mynah bird. I didn't know that. So, I guess it is possible that they picked up a "honk" somewhere. I watched them last evening as they gathered to roost for the night. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Their murmurations went on for about half an hour. Beautiful to see and hear! So disappointed I haven't been able to go out and watch the show every night!

I'm not a birder at all, but this thread reminded me of a pic I took years ago.

Is the bird dead or sleeping? :D

It stayed in that position long enough that J and I got bored and left, so I never found out which it was.

 That is completely bizarre...

If they were dead, they would no longer be on the branch. Definitely sleeping.

That's what I thought, too, but I've never before that one and never since seen a bird sleep in a position like that. :D

I'm wondering if maybe a stroke or some issue? I'm trying to remember how chickens look when they have had a stroke, ( it's just out of reach in my mind....annoyingly)

Interesting. Something for me to look up. Bird strokes.

A quick, delightful glimpse of red-wing blackbirds feasting on a field of ripening barley; intense flashes of scarlet, and a symphony of trills.

Those are birds sleeping...

I'm still a couple weeks away from the return of the Orioles. They usually show up around the first week of May. I've got a special feeder for them. Grape jelly gives them sugar to recharge after their long migration.
